Good day, and good luck.

May we end up with a kinder, better set of governments than the day started with.

As to why...take a look at this:

My tax paperwork is now in the mail, en route to Sudbury for processing. We'll see soon enough if my calculations are good enough. There's always something I've misunderstood, sometimes corrected to my benefit, sometimes not so much, every year. If I end up repaying something again - it's happened on occasion - I find it harder than many to complain about that, especially after these last two years of Pandemic-era supports.

I do want and will the social safety net to evolve to the better for us all, of course. UBI, at a reasonable monthly level, indexed to inflation...that would be good, I'm convinced.

Housing supports for all, housing for all, that would be good also.

Finally rolling pharma, eye care, dental care, mental health care into the overall medicare system, ditto.

We have to argue for it. Until we win.

More on other topics anon.

Seems to me there might be a political fight at CBS HQ soon, if not now, between the bosses of the news division vs. those of the Star Trek offices...because I've seen the content and casting of the current Trek series. And have you noticed who the news division's taking on as commentators? Mulvaney and who else?

Yes, I am absolutely speculating in an ill-informed way here. It looks to me like the two divisions of the company are going to be at cross-purposes.

No one is selling leaded gasoline/petrol for cars anywhere on Earth now. At least, not legally that we know of. Algeria was the last "recognized" country whose gas stations were still selling the stuff, and that finally stopped this year.

We'll still be recovering from the error of having used the stuff for generations, but with each country and company that got out of that business, the resulting damages have been less severe over time.

Switching the world's transportation fleets over to zero-emissions vehicles is a continuing project, of course.

Continuing the job search this afternoon.

Also: revisiting the history of the Declaration of the Independence of the Mind via Ideas. If you're interested in the text of that original declaration from 1919, here's a link.

(I wonder if Leslie Charteris might have read that Declaration. Some of the stuff in those Saint stories of his gets me thinking now about the possibility. Certainly, if he had, he'd have put it aside for the needs of World War 2 and the battle against fascism as it presented itself to our world back then.)

On a related note: Ideas, the CBC Radio series, is devoting some time over this past broadcast season of 2020-'21 to the theme of The Common Good. Other instalments of that series of broadcasts may be accessed here.

In this case, Rush Limbaugh's death.

How to celebrate it? Find someone he'd have wanted ignored and abused, and help them lift themselves up.

It's the best sort of vengeance to take upon his crimes.

I was hoping for a response along these lines, but am pleasantly surprised at the speed of it.

It's not fast enough, not yet. But it's more than we had this time last year, right?

So, the announcement of the winners is done.

Reactions?

(Interesting historical sidebar: the Pulitzers' second century, we hope, has begun just as their first did in 1917...right in the midst of a pandemic.)

The Ottawa Comic Jam, an informal gathering of cartoonists and animators - from amateur to professional - has been meeting at this restaurant on Somerset near Bronson for years. Maybe a decade, I think.

Now, this, an image taken by one Fanis Grammenos:

Twice a victim - adaptation and Corona-virus

To the photographer, the building is a victim of "adaptation". I was a beneficiary of that adaptation, as a regular visitor/customer and a local artist trying to just...do art. Somehow.

But the Shanghai is capable of providing take-out and delivery service. Or, was. But there's still hope, and an explanation in some detail...at this weblog entry:

Adding Abigail Disney to the list of Responsibly-Behaving Rich People. This is the latest instalment in the list of reasons for that:

Right up there with Nick Hanauer, Mark Cuban, and others.

Comments in her Twitter thread above-linked led me to Chamath Palihapitiya as well, whom I guess I need to learn more about. Informed opinions on him are welcome.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go see a pharmacy about an APAP device later this morning. And when I get back from that inquiry, it's back to the job search.

First time I'd seen a Max Planck quote at an activists' march on Parliament Hill.

Here's another one I liked from that march.
