About that "National Security Statement"?
Dec. 9th, 2025 05:27 pmLet me know if this is paywalled?

Ontario Election 2025
Feb. 23rd, 2025 11:03 amI voted yesterday at Place d'Orléans Mall. The Elections Ontario riding field office is on the second floor until it's all over.
NDP, of course, in my case. I couldn't let myself vote under the influence of the idea that the outcome's predestined at either the riding level or across the province. I had to vote with hope in place.
I'm happy to note that there was a steady stream of traffic. Lots of people showing up early, and at a steady pace, too.

Monarchy: In Case Anyone's Wondering
May. 6th, 2023 07:26 pmI didn't watch the coronation. I didn't feel the need. Not a fan, also not an enemy either. I swore oaths a couple of times, yeah, for jobs I've held. There are things that the Crown is useful for, yes, I believe that. It's an imperfect, messy - oft' bloody-messy! - thing, like many human-built things are.
Okay. So I participated in this workshop last week on the art of getting out the vote...in general, for all the candidates. In my previous entry here, I made it clear once again that I still do have Standards as to what sorts of people ought to be winning these elections. I want a city that's safer for everyone living here, save for maybe out-and-out fascist-bigot people. (If they're looking to put such mindsets permanently aside, good. Welcome (back) to the club!)
Anyway. Looking at this item on percentage of those eligible to vote who actually "showed up" last time around in Toronto:
http://spacing.ca/toronto/2022/09/12/election-mapping-municipal-election-voter-turnout/
I am, of course, more focused on Ottawa here, as this is where I live. So, where do I find the relevant stats for my city?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Ottawa_municipal_election
(I would like to nail down the sources for that Wikipedia article, preferably soon.)
According to which, 42.55 % of those then eligible to vote in Ottawa actually did vote. Which was an improvement over 2014's turnout of 39.92 %.
So that was good. We want to get that back up above 2010's turnout of 42 %, though, right?
There were videos I got to look at, some of which I hope to share in the next installment...

Organized Bigotry in Orléans? Probably.
Sep. 12th, 2022 11:01 amTwo anger-inducing things I encountered this morning while out for my walk:
1) the school board candidate profiled by AntiHate.ca as a Problematic person has her first campaign signs up, one of them at a prominent intersection near me.
2) At that intersection, I passed a person who greeted me with that now-infamous "white power" hand gesture along with more innocuous words.
Right here in Orléans, east of downtown Ottawa.
I know of the Convoy Crowd encampments at St. Brigid's in Lowertown and the Bikers' Church in Vanier. Where are they gathering here, unwatched, in Orléans? How do we make them understand that they've worn out their welcome?

Another January 6th
Jan. 6th, 2022 07:18 amWhat happened on this date a year ago is known too well by now.
Other anniversaries are still noted as well. But the Trump Insurrection - still underway - is the most infamous of them right now in North American and global small-d democratic-minded memories. I've read in The Globe and Mail, The Intercept, and elsewhere about the alarm bells still sounding. The looks by various authors to Rwanda and what used to be the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia and how those places ought to have meaning for us all now.
I say this is not an anniversary to celebrate. It should be another "never again" moment. We know, also, that there are still too many who have sworn "forever again and again until WE win!" instead, because they've learned to see the real worlds through the kinds of lenses I call at best horrific. Because the will to cruelty remains persistent in too many human hearts.
The work to contain the will to cruelty continues for us all. Everywhere.

Dec. 14th, 2021 08:08 pmIdeas is replaying a defence of nihilism on CBC Radio One as I type this.
Meanwhile, I'm reading Rabble.ca articles.
Tomorrow, I hope to make time to resume work on a commission sketch. The reference materials sent to me for this one have been challenging reading. Somewhat more challenging to print out in a legible fashion.

GoDaddy vs. Greg Abbott's Enablers
Sep. 3rd, 2021 10:01 pmApparently, the company's leaders were unhappy about being dragged into this.

As Regards the Current Situation in Texas
Sep. 3rd, 2021 07:53 pmI note that
wendelah1 and I don't know each other. Yet.
Still, her post re: resources for dealing with the Texas Situation should be linked far and wide. I don't know what I can do beyond this, at least for now.
