I've been reminded over on TrekBBS that there's ongoing medical fundraisers for two writers whose work on comic books and on Star Trek I've enjoyed reading and re-reading over the decades.

Mike W. Barr

Peter A. David

Passing this along, as I have confirmation from multiple sources that it is for real. Peter's work sits in my comics storage boxes and on my bookshelves, and I've enjoyed much of it over the decades. If you can help and haven't already done so, please do.

That blog is now on hiatus. Details here:

Also, their syndicated feed to Dreamwidth has now been taken by what looks like a Vietnamese footwear company...?

Sorry for not noticing until just now. I missed this for six months!

I've decided, for my birthday, to launch a fundraiser for the Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County via Facebook.

How slow a pace of donations should I expect?

Following up a bit on local comics creators and suchlike.

One friendly acquaintance of mine from the long-dissolved Orléans Comic Jam sessions, Dominic Bercier, has a Kickstarter fundraiser/project going at the moment. Timing might be tight for you if you're interested, I understand that...

Anyway, here's the link.

I've known this guy for a couple of decades now. Providing a virtual bullhorn seems to be as much help as I can personally give at the moment. So...

Shelley "TSivia" Rabinovitch is a friendly acquaintance of longstanding from as far back as the early years of Can-Con's relaunch as a convention for writers, illustrators and editors of speculative fiction and their fans. We were both on the organizing committee together for a couple of years.

TSivia is currently in need of some support herself at the moment. Details are in the link. Some of you will have already heard of this through other channels and already acted upon that, I suspect. If you haven't, please have a look:

Taking a break from Pirate Day stuff because one of my friendlisters needs help covering their eye care.

Douglas [personal profile] gridlore Berry has some post-cataract surgery complications that surprised his finances, and so there's a GoFundMe now active to cover those extra costs. Details here. If you can donate, please do. If not, please spread the word as best you can!

I note that[personal profile] wendelah1 and I don't know each other. Yet.

Still, her post re: resources for dealing with the Texas Situation should be linked far and wide. I don't know what I can do beyond this, at least for now.

I am on Adam-Troy Castro's friendlist on Facebook, and we have enough mutual friends and acquaintances between us who've done their own due diligence by now that I am convinced this is for real.

If you can help, please do.

That's the word I got this morning via Twitter. Hayden Trenholm bought that publishing company from Virginia O'Dine about a decade ago, built it up into one of Canada's independent SF&F powerhouses as far I could see. I have a few of the books put out by Bundoran across the years, and it's going to hurt in several ways to lose them as a company.

Among their titles that I own:

- Defining Diana by Hayden himself.
- Right to Know by Edward Willett
- Strange Bedfellows, an anthology about alternative versions of Canadian history.

Can-Con is going to hurt as well. Bundoran has been part of the core support of our little literary SF&F convention here since it re-started. As if anyone's going to cope with the Time of Pandemic unscathed.

At any rate, if there's any kind of good luck that can befall Bundoran between now and the announced October 30th shutdown date, this post is the start of my effort to invoke it. I hope I'm not alone, and I hope it works.

Variance is run by a friend of mine in comics fandom of long standing. They're starting up a new pro bono project called "A Matter of Right". Details at this link:

https://www.varianceme.com/

If you think you can find a way to support this with either financial help, skills or both, please let them know via the links they've provided on that page.

I'd like to provide some of the skills, but I'm a bit rusty on that count right now. So I'm doing this instead. Thanks for hearing us out in any case.

More on other stuff later.

"Life in the Time of Pandemic"

For a longish time, my main art supply shop - aside from some stuff I needed from the campus store at Algonquin College and a couple of other venues - has been Wallack's. They're locally owned and operated, and have been here since well before I moved to Ottawa-Gatineau.

They've had a rougher go of it in recent years, and this latest pandemic has been one more kick in the teeth to them. But despite having to close up their storefront to walk-in traffic for the duration of this crisis, they're still game for sales over the web for either pick-up or delivery. Please check their website as linked above for the rules of the process, e-mail them any questions you might have, and if you see something you like and can afford....?

Whether or not you tell them where the suggestion came from is up to you.

Quoting yesterday's mass e-mailout to NCF members from current Executive Director Shelley Robinson:

NCF believes that everyone in our region should have access to affordable and high quality internet and related technologies, understand how to use them and feel safe online. And we’re proud that our locally-hosted ad-free email service has been part of this work since we launched our services in February 1993.

Twenty-five years later, we launched our Community Access Fund, which helps those living on low incomes access the internet and learn how to use it safely. In that time we have offered almost 300 Ottawa Community Housing tenants a lower-cost unlimited use internet package, as well as offering all our members dedicated workshops and special events like Digital Access Day.

We want to expand the Community Access Fund with more digital literacy training and opening up the lower-cost internet package to other folks living on low incomes. Our goal is raising $10,000 and at least doubling the enrollment in the program. Please donate today to help support this work.
