Any recommendations for "generic" styluses for use with tablets of multiple origins?

On Saturday, one of the places I visited was Staples on Innes at Tenth Line. Some of the products I saw on offer were "generic", house-branded styluses.

I was hoping some of you might have actually tried such devices with whatever tablets you make use of.

Petra Meyer came up with this list the other day. You might have preferences of your own. Some of you, I see, have works included in this list, and I offer congratulations upon that inclusion!

Not sure how many of these I've been able to read yet, but that is a quest for another day.

"Life in the Time of Pandemic"

For a longish time, my main art supply shop - aside from some stuff I needed from the campus store at Algonquin College and a couple of other venues - has been Wallack's. They're locally owned and operated, and have been here since well before I moved to Ottawa-Gatineau.

They've had a rougher go of it in recent years, and this latest pandemic has been one more kick in the teeth to them. But despite having to close up their storefront to walk-in traffic for the duration of this crisis, they're still game for sales over the web for either pick-up or delivery. Please check their website as linked above for the rules of the process, e-mail them any questions you might have, and if you see something you like and can afford....?

Whether or not you tell them where the suggestion came from is up to you.

Mark Watney didn't know how good he had it...but then, there wasn't a pandemic while he was on Mars, right?

That said, The Martian would be a good book to re-read, and a good movie to re-watch during these next few weeks, I think. It reinforces some of the thinking we're all going to need to practice.

I saw the movie tonight. I trusted to Gail Simone's recommendation on this, and got my time and money's worth. Seemed like every character with a speaking part was swearing a blue streak, but this time, so what? This really felt like Gotham to me.

Thanks, Gail.

...and speaking of essays on Tor.com from friendlisters inspiring unexpected finds: [personal profile] mcwetboy just wrote a thing on how fantasy maps might or might not fit into the worlds of the stories they're made to serve:

In the process, he pointed out a thing that I didn't know existed in any nation: Map Reading Week. If anyone knows of a Canadian counterpart, that might get my attention too!

And yes, this is a not-so-veiled clue to Metro, Shoppers Drug Mart, Rexall, and a few other companies operating in Ottawa. I've spoken of this before, after all.

Based on a friend's recommendation, I've borrowed Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice from the library. It's slow going, but I'm expecting it'll be worth the time.

A conclusion I've reached after watching this week's episode...

Something I'd be glad to start seeing on The Flash?

In the credits: "Based on the series created by Gardner Fox, Harry Lampert and Carmine Infantino".

Could that happen at some point in 2016?

Rummaging through the Ottawa sections of the Skyscraper Page Forums for topics of interest.

You might want to rummage there too, whether or not your city has a section there. There's some fun to be had by science-fiction-minded architecture and design fandom...

The new issue showed up in my mail this morning. Sorry that I missed the release party.

Spacing33-summer2014-cover-600x464
The cover only begins to hint at the stuff inside, projects and images, ideas and debates, all about what makes a city - any city - work, and what might make a city work better. If you're reading this entry - not just in the cities named on the cover, but in Ottawa and Regina, Halifax and Victoria, Guelph and Serfaus(across the Atlantic in Austria!)...well, there's a lot of ground to cover.

No, I don't have any material in this one. But you might want to take a good look anyway.

If you do, let them know what caught your attention?

Back to other stuff in a little while...

It's been fun to watch the Twelve Days of Fast Fiction play out over at Lee Barnett's "Budgie's Perch" weblog.

To sum up the premise: Twelve personages of note, some august, some intentionally not, set down challenges for Lee to meet in writing as many pieces of "fast fiction": four-word titles, and a word specifically chosen by each author for Lee to include in a story that should run no more, and no less than 200 words.

Lee met everyone's challenge during this particular Twelve Days of Fast Fiction, and the results are now available for purchase as an E-Book in several formats. I would recommend you all - if you haven't already done so or made arrangements for the days ahead - to make that purchase for your entertainment.

I would further recommend that you pick up Lee's other published works. There's two collections that have seen print at last count, and you can still get Volume Two in hardcopy or e-format from Amazon, your choice. If you want Volume One - or prefer to get Volume Two from the author - again, you still can. E-mail Lee directly - budgie(at)hypotheticals.co.uk - and tell him what e-format you prefer, ePub or Kindle.

More on the published doings of other friends in due course...

Specifically, the reading list recommended to him by his supervising officer per last week's episode. He told Skye that he was reading "one of about a hundred" such books as part of his ongoing training process.

Which makes sense. Intelligence/law-enforcement officers should be expected to undertake a certain amount of this stuff.

I wonder what titles are on that list given to Agent Ward.

Any suggestions? Some will likely be specific to the Marvel Cinema'Verse, but others might have analogues in the real world's bookstores.
