I went to the event described in this article:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-racist-graffiti-solidarity-synagogue-1.3859097

I couldn't not go. Not with the news of acts of vandalism across the city, and the ongoing concerns about the US political situation that many see as one of the triggers of these crimes. It helped me with my anxiety issues for several good hours.

I hope that I was of help to others by being there.

Something I was reminded of this morning, via the CBC's Sunday Edition. You won't agree with all the choices of the authors on that list and that's right and proper, but maybe it'll start a discussion of equally helpful alternatives or additions.

Listening to Ontario Today and some of the callers talking about the Obama Administration seem to be hitting a series of talking points about how we must learn to Be Glad He Can't Be Re-Elected. (Sarcastic italics mine.)

The Tea Party sadly still has a Canadian arm, I'm afraid. Never doubt this.

Back to the job search and other researches...

You'll have your own opinions on the matter. That's alright. I haven't made up my own mind yet, but suspect that it depends on specific class and topic. Context will be very important here, as with so much else.

MCU Idea: Various characters of your choice have reasons and ideas for writing up a mixtape recommendations list for Peter Quill. I don't need to know why they'd do such a thing, I just want to see the music playlists those characters will come up with.

Some people argue that this is indeed a false dichotomy.

Not entirely sure that I agree with the "yes" side of this one...but go have a listen for yourselves.

This debate happened on CBC Radio's Q yesterday, moderated by Jian Ghomeshi.

(As a SHIELD fan and a reader of Glenn Greenwald, I admit to some internal conflict here.)

Some linkages of interest, which I thank [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll for pointing out and prompting others to point out in the course of the conversation he triggered:

Steven Attewell: Steve Rogers Isn’t Just Any Hero

The Infamous Brad: It Would Be Remarkable if Steve Rogers and Tony Stark Did Get Along

Mightygodking.com: Things I’d Like To Write Someday, #247654932

Considering that we're halfway between Avengers and Winter Soldier, it seems like a good time to put linkages to these three opinions on the same page and let everyone who cares to do so cut loose with their own POVs. Which of these works for you, which doesn't and either way, why?
dewline: Doctor Who quote: Books. Best Weapons in the World (Books)
There's been lots of ink, bandwidth and blood spilled over the millennia on this question, but this video makes for an entertaining attempt at an answer, yes?

And as a watcher of several comic-book continuities for the last three decades, this question has perhaps more relevance than even your average watcher of international politics. ;-)

Specifically, the reading list recommended to him by his supervising officer per last week's episode. He told Skye that he was reading "one of about a hundred" such books as part of his ongoing training process.

Which makes sense. Intelligence/law-enforcement officers should be expected to undertake a certain amount of this stuff.

I wonder what titles are on that list given to Agent Ward.

Any suggestions? Some will likely be specific to the Marvel Cinema'Verse, but others might have analogues in the real world's bookstores.

Yeah. I saw the news from BBC. Gonna miss Mr. Smith.

So.

Idris Elba vs. Helen Mirren.

Anyone?

For a man so well-informed about so much else in the worlds today, Terry Deary seems to have lost a few clues about the value of public libraries, particularly in these days of Austerianism-enforced Precariat life.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll for this particular heads-up about this particular author...whom, I note, seems an anomaly amongst authors.

Update:

Two well-said counter-arguments I know of: [livejournal.com profile] scalzi's "Personal History of Libraries" essay, and [livejournal.com profile] seanan_mcguire's own defence of these halls of personal learning.

The latter is not a new posting, but it points to issues that still need the proper level attention to be given them, and it started a new friendship for me.

So, I went to this discussion on how to (re)build a better suburb last month. Allegra Newman hosted it, and here's the story with some pix from yours truly.

Seems that it's taking yet another additional form of late, courtesy of the protesters therein with the help of Kickstarter.

Thoughts, anyone?

Doing a bit of shilling for my [livejournal.com profile] spacing_ottawa friends here.

Seems that during his prairie travels these past few months, my good editor Evan Thornton came across this little operation under the roof of the Winnipeg Free Press.

Here in Ottawa, the Presse Café under the roof of the CBC Ottawa Broadcast Centre comes close to matching it in terms of atmosphere, although there's enough wi-fi-equipped competition that perhaps it doesn't get used to the extent that it could be. Additionally, Evan notes some other factors in play that I didn't think of.

I wonder, though...CBC could have something really useful there.

...and it was by turns entertaining and predictable. It was the Ottawa-Orléans debate sponsored by the local chamber of commerce at the Shenkman Arts Centre, of course, and I'm wondering if I couldn't have better spent my time doing something else in retrospect.

The format, the lack of all the candidates running for the office - paradoxically, it was the NDP candidate who didn't show up for this one, while two other events planned for earlier on got cancelled by Harper's man in Orléans refusing to attend - on the stage...the containment and vetting of questions from the voter audience...not entirely satisfying.

I have to admit: I left early. Not the best show of respect I could have given, true, and yet I don't feel we as voters were respected in the first instance.

No, two wrongs don't make a right.

I may come back to this subject later. Possibly with photos added.

[livejournal.com profile] jasonfranks just posted linkage to an interview he did recently that got my attention about some of the parallels between Canadian comics creators and their Australian kin:

In Australia, everything is local. The scene is going a bit more national now, thanks to the internet, but our cities are so geographically remote that even that is difficult. There's currently one publisher with direct market distribution, one with newsstand distribution, and a few traditional publishers who provide a very small amount of work for the bookstore market, but that's it. These days we have a few options as far as the circuit goes, but that's a very recent thing. Five years ago there was one per year. If you want to seriously do comics, you have to look overseas. Our population is small, and domestic sales are proportionately low. Also, it's hard to get out of the slushpiles without some facetime. Facetime costs thousands of dollars in airfare and accommodation. It's a battle!

Granted that we've had an inside track on getting ourselves organized faster with a better infrastructure to some extent, and living next to the Elephant also helped somewhat...and yet I can't help but feel more than a little sympathy for what feels like a shared situation.

What say you?

A debate of sorts in this list, and one worth undertaking:

Thanks to Johanna Draper-Carlson for the pointer to that list! I'll be interested to see how the voting and debate plays out...

Blame Keith Loh for this.

He tagged me with this meme via Facebook tonight, and it seemed worth cross-posting.

So. Fifteen fictional influences on my life and mind. Not all of them entirely healthy, I have to admit. Here's my list good for today only. It will likely change tomorrow.

1. Charlie Brown
2. Snoopy
3. Andy Capp
4. Popeye
5. Spider-Man
6. Cst. Benton Fraser, RCMP
7. Dominic Da Vinci
8. Batman(Bruce Wayne)
9. James Hudson of Alpha Flight
10. Heather Hudson of Alpha Flight
11. Linus Van Pelt
12. Wolverine
13. Hulk
14. Simon Templar
15. John Steed

Over to you...

Someone asked a question about economic bubbles and where they might be popping up next...

http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2010/08/what-is-the-next-bubble.html

Frankly, being - like many of the rest of you here - in a somewhat vulnerable state these days, I thought keeping an eye on that discussion was a prudent thing to do. Also, working - or trying to work - in both speculative fiction as either writer, artist or both, and in writing on urban infrastructure issues, there's a story idea mine percolating away there.

So...rather than clutter up [livejournal.com profile] antipope's space any faster than he can handle, setting up a branch discussion here on the same subject seems a good thing, too.

Where should we be watching like hawks? Or vultures, perhaps?
