ByMUG - November 7, 2021
Nov. 7th, 2021 09:22 amSince it's the first Sunday of the month, my local Mac User Group is holding a Zoom meeting today. As the website notes:
"For November’s meeting we’re going to discuss impressions of the freshly-released macOS Monterey and the MacBook Pro laptops, along with trying to answer any other iOS/Mac-related questions as best as we can.
The meeting takes place on Sunday, November 7th, 2021, at 1 p.m. and we will send the link & instructions out via the mailing list about fifteen minutes before 1pm on Sunday."

So I'm on the mailing list for this stuff. It's publicly available to anyone interested, and you can sign up at the City Hall website, ottawa.ca. I missed the Finance-EcDev committee meeting this morning, but want to remind myself re: tomorrow and Thursday of this stuff...
All Council, Committee and Board meetings will be held by remote, electronic participation, unless otherwise noted. For a complete agenda and updates, please sign up for email alerts, visit ottawa.ca/agendas or call 3-1-1.

City Hall is temporarily closed to help stop the spread of COVID-19. In-person meetings have been cancelled. Such meetings, as warranted, will be held electronically until further notice. Feb. 7th, 2021 09:34 amThe bird-feeder hanging in the back yard is getting business. Squirrels are running this way and that, up and down tree branches and across the yards, front and back. At least one cat per month on average is getting the attention that requires "Missing" posters being taped onto community mailboxes. I've got a follow-up dental appointment tomorrow, and probably one more day of data entry work to finish after that's done. Also, I need to talk with my CPAP machine supplier about paperwork I believe I should have signed by now. The job search continues. This afternoon, ByMUG has a Zoom meeting for me to be part of.
Meantime, I have compression socks to take out of the wash to air-dry.

The Ottawa Comic Jam, an informal gathering of cartoonists and animators - from amateur to professional - has been meeting at this restaurant on Somerset near Bronson for years. Maybe a decade, I think.
Now, this, an image taken by one Fanis Grammenos:

To the photographer, the building is a victim of "adaptation". I was a beneficiary of that adaptation, as a regular visitor/customer and a local artist trying to just...do art. Somehow.
But the Shanghai is capable of providing take-out and delivery service. Or, was. But there's still hope, and an explanation in some detail...at this weblog entry:

While I Was Out, the Worlds Changed Again
Jan. 7th, 2020 08:46 pmI went to a meeting of the local riding association for the provincial New Democratic Party tonight. My supper beforehand was British-style chips and a Coke. And I participated in an uncontested nomination meeting. Party leader Andrea Horwath showed up in person to rally the troops. Sat right in the row in front of me for the first few minutes before being called up to do that rallying. I expect that some of the local news services tomorrow will announce our candidate's name and some of her history. Maybe this will do some good.
While that was going on, Iran's current "management" rang in chapter two of the Evil-Kill-Dance between them and the Trump by firing rockets at two air bases in Iraq that US forces were stationed at in reply to the Trump's drone-assisted disposal of Qasem Suleimani's life over the weekend. Thanks to both governments' leaders for absolutely nothing of worth and value.
Meanwhile, the quest for exoplanets continues to accumulate successes. Of particular interest tonight are worlds orbiting TOI-700 Doradus and TOI-1338 Pictoris. The latter is already being compared to Star Wars' Tatooine system because of the binary stars angle.
(My apologies for mashing IAU standard star-naming/cataloguing practices up here like this. I just wanted to make clear which parts of our skies to look to.)
The worlds are a mess. And likely to stay that way.
More on other stuff as the night goes on.

Yeah, so...
Oct. 14th, 2018 09:29 pm...Can-Con 2018 was good. Managed to get some time with a bunch of old friends and friendly acquaintances and learned a lot during the weekend, from immigration law to electronic warfare to climate derangement to books published outside North America.
Have pre-registered for next year's edition, which will be hosting the Aurora Awards as well. Just so you know.

Can-Con 2018
Oct. 12th, 2018 10:53 amI'll be attending Can-Con this weekend.
https://can-con.org/
Not sitting on any panels, if you're wondering. Just one more member of the audiences wandering between panel rooms and the dealers' room and the consuite. Just the way I started, back when I first got to town and attended Maplecon 7 back in the 20th Century.
That's okay.

Ottawa Comic Jam - January 2016
Jan. 27th, 2016 03:10 pmI'll be at the Shanghai Restaurant for supper and a chat session with a bunch of cartoonists, designers, animators, etc. tonight. Said restaurant's a half-block east of the corner of Bronson and Somerset West, on the north side of Somerset West. It's their first jam session of 2016. Any time after 6 PM should be good for you to start showing up.
Yes, it's short notice. I apologize for that.

UX Design Meetup
Sep. 15th, 2014 08:19 amI figure on attending this on Thursday night.
As for the group's purpose? Details here in the "About us" link. With my addition to design issues rooted in things all the way back to TOS Trek and Space: 1999, I figured I had to go have a look.
More on other stuff later in the day...

We're trying something new here: multiple meetings in different neighbourhoods during a given month. You don't have to attend both. Just the one that's convenient to you.
Here's the one for Orléans:

There'll be a further announcement about one near to St. Laurent Mall shortly, I suspect.

Our final CAN•CON 2012 meeting and social will be held this coming Saturday October 13th at the Colonnade Restaurant on Metcalfe St. at 6 pm. We will also begin preliminary discussions about hopes, desires and expectations for CAN•CON 2013. Since we will be hosting Canvention 33 (and as a result host the Aurora awards ceremony) we think it'll be a bit different from CAN•CON 2012.
One thing we are hoping to do is gather a few new people to do volunteeer work over the next year as we prepare for CAN•CON 2013. More people means the tasks are spread out and no one person is doing too much. There is a great range of jobs to be done and any amount of time offered is appreciated.
Here are some examples of job we are hoping to find people for:
Most urgent: Marketing person
Con-Suite/ Hospitality person
Volunteer Coordinator
Writers (for blog content, social media, restaurant guide)
Events liaison
Signage
and more!
Please come join us for some food and good conversation:
