I'd love to go. I used to be a volunteer working with the organizing committee on designing promo stuff.

Two problems with going there in person:

1) No masking-required policy in place on public transit. If I can't walk to a destination or get a lift from a trustworthy driver, I only use public transit.

2) The venue is in Kanata, at the other end of Ottawa from where I live in Orléans.

So.

If you're going, please be careful. 😷

Once again, I will not be attending Can-Con in person this year. This is due to my continuing efforts to reduce my risk of COVID-19 reinfection and the consequences of it for me and other people.

Even if Can-Con went back from "recommended" to "required" on its masking policy, OC Transpo isn't even being allowed to bother one way or the other. As the public transit system is my main way of getting around Ottawa, and Can-Con is something I want, rather than need, to attend, it's one more thing I will forego.

I'm sorry about this.

Sad, but necessary, I think. If things get better faster than we expect, I imagine that solutions to take advantage will be found. In the meantime...

One of our local SF authors has a new book out!

I know Derek from the CAN-CON organizing committee. So I'm rather biased in his favour.

Our intrepid organizing committee will just have to work out something on-line for the benefit of the region and the country (and have announced such intent). That might be more involving for more people, depending on how things go over the next weeks and months.

Anyway, Can-Con wrapped up well enough for me. I didn't take in the Aurora Awards ceremonies on Saturday night, but I understand that some karaoke fun was orchestrated afterwards. And with only a day's notice that I know of, too.

So...I don't know if I'm going to be able to attend next year. Various issues in play there, which I may or may not discuss here.

And yes, I'm voting in the federal election on my way home from work. The polling station I'm expected to visit is directly on the last leg of the transit routing, so I can't give myself that excuse for missing out on that.

No, I will not be watching the live coverage on TV or listening to it over the radio. Stress management dictates this, not a will to ignorance.

I understand the winners of the Aurora Awards for this year were announced last night...?

I needed to be elsewhere because household chores, exhaustion, etc. were in play. So I'll see what's to be attended this morning and early afternoon. And I expect to be home in time for Cross-Country Checkup on the radio.

More later, because early morning bus to be caught...

After visiting my dentist's office to pay down my bill, I plan on going to Can-Con for Day 2.

Not sure what I'm taking in today, though.

I was only able to stay about two hours or so, but got to see at least 20 of my Facebook friendlisters in person either directly, or across a room. Glad for that much at least, today!

It was going to happen today, but for the rain.

I don't expect to be there at the protest - day-job obligations! - but I do expect local traffic to be affected, including the traffic towards the Sheraton Ottawa for Can-Con 2019's first day.

I'm trying to remember the last time I voted in those awards at all. Coming up blank, and that negligence falls upon my karma - what there is of it - considering I was once a co-nominee for co-editing the Ottawa SF Society Statement what seems like a couple of decades ago. (It was a particularly chaotic couple of years, if memory serves at all.)

But it finally got done before deadline today this year.

And we'll find out who's won at Can-Con next month.

...Can-Con 2018 was good. Managed to get some time with a bunch of old friends and friendly acquaintances and learned a lot during the weekend, from immigration law to electronic warfare to climate derangement to books published outside North America.

Have pre-registered for next year's edition, which will be hosting the Aurora Awards as well. Just so you know.

I'm afraid I closed that community blog down a couple of weeks ago, per discusssions with the current executive of Can-Con. Between Facebook and Twitter, the organizers seem to be getting everything done via Social Media that they need to right now.

Michael Enright speaks of a divide between nations, of music, of grief and joy.

Can-Con 2016 is wrapping up in Ottawa today. It's been fun, it's been a learning experience. And I should have left for home last night at least a half-hour earlier than I actually did.

If you're interested in literary-format SF - novels, comics, e-books! - there's a convention in Ottawa-Gatineau that wants to see you this September!

http://can-con.org/cc/announcing-can-con-2016/

Keep that website bookmarked, okay? Because there's lots of news to come between now and September...

Done with CAN-CON for another year. Enjoyed seven different panels, touched base with a few dozen friends and friendly acquaintances again, learned stuff, had fun, overate a little...and still have not learned the Art of Making Paper Airplanes.

So I'm going to attend a few panels at this convention:

http://www.can-con.org/

Not sure which ones. I'll know when finally read the schedule in the program book. Not going to be a panelist, sorry. Just another fan, me.

More later...
