dewline: A TV Set showing the Canadian flag (cancontv)
After watching last night's installment of Coroner, something was reaffirmed for me: if you're not left feeling uneasy every so often watching this series, it's not working as a TV series.

I may revise this entry with additional details after work.

The ending of last night's episode really twisted a knife in my heart.

Fifteen minutes into Coroner tonight, and already the waterworks almost started twice.

Shocked that they managed to keep Nicholas Campbell in the cast for at least this episode.

Surreal and funereal.

More as it goes...

So, Transplant is getting picked up by NBC for US broadcast.

And Coroner is getting picked up by the CW Network.

Both of those...they're both medical dramas of different kinds. Coroner also doubles as mystery/crime fiction. I'm not sure how they'll fit onto US broadcast schedules. Transplant, which started up on CTV, with its pro-refugee/immigration perspective. That, I'm sure, will enrage the reich-wingers in the US once the word gets out. Coroner started out on CBC, our Crown-owned public broadcaster, and is a woman's-perspective show, and it does not shy away from showing broken people being broken and trying to heal themselves and one another.

And both series depict life in different aspects of Toronto as itself, as its own place. Not pretending to be anywhere else.

If you're looking for different things from your TV-watching than you've had up to now, then do consider these two series.

There's an interview with the writer and director of this week's episode that might be worth some time and attention. There are spoilers for Seasons 1 and 2 of Coroner, so be warned of that.

Which just started this week on CBC. It's as much a soap opera as crime/mystery and horror show, and that last is in my thinking a very quiet, subtle and slow-building horror when it shows up. Never mind the fake burnt corpse built for a post-arson investigation, it's what shows up in people's behaviour. Including the protagonist, Jenny Cooper MD as portrayed by Serinda Swan...and Marvel's loss is definitely CBC's gain here with Swan's work on this show.

I understand the new series based on comics written by Greg Rucka is premiering on CTV (Canada) and ABC (USA) tonight. Who else is planning on watching, either at broadcast time or later with PVR assistance?

I got this via the newsletter subscription for _Script_ Magazine today. Since I'm a fan of Coroner specifically...

Galactica fans, we have some mourning to do. Doc Cottle is no longer with us.

For fans of Da Vinci's Inquest, we mourn Det. Leo Shannon.

I've finished a quick and dirty read-through of it, and I'm mostly happy with it. I'm not anywhere near the science and technology nerd I ought to be, despite living ever closer to several of those possible futures. "Jazz" Bashara, Saudi-born and Lunar-raised, strikes me as an interesting enough protagonist. Not going to call her a "hero", which is likely to be a label she'd reject anyway if she were real. The story's not boring, and getting into the political and economic as well as the technical nuts and bolts always helps keep me interested when it's well-presented. It's as much a mystery/crime drama as a space adventure. The two aspects are well-balanced here.

It's not fair to compare Artemis to The Martian. So I'm not going there.

If I were to adapt Artemis for any other medium, I'd say "mini-series for TV, five to ten episodes". It's got enough characters with their own stuff going on in the background to justify it.

I'll leave the question of whether "Jazz" and her neighbours and family should get a sequel to Mr. Weir.

Bottom line: worth your money, worth your time.

When I saw that child with "Truth" written upon her brow...lashing out in pain and fear at those calling her "freak"...I knew we were in for something painful, something honest nested in the lies of storytelling through the TV.

Tracey Forbes, if you're not setting up a scriptbook for the retail trade, I'll be disappointed.
