Looking at this for a few minutes:

https://www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/archive/2021/09/electric-cars-have-hit-inflection-point/620233/?utm_source=feed

I didn't think things were moving this quickly on the global scale in terms of cars and trucks. Yes, the manufacturing process is still messy as Hell. But are we making progress of some sort here? I think the answer to that question is "yes".

[personal profile] armiphlage, [personal profile] autopope, you might have some informed context to add here...? Anyone else?

Who's interested in what I have to say in places like Kharkiv and Recklinghausen?

I have no hope of qualifying for the job, I suspect, but as someone interested in astronomy in general the National Research Council advert caught my attention anyway. NRC is looking for a "Radio Astronomy Signal Chain Engineer" for their Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre as I write this. Does anyone in my friendlist know what goes into that job?

Taking verbal shots at Leonardo diCaprio?

Tch.

On what I hope to be a positive note of curiosity, what more can anyone tell me of Ivan Valente and Randolfe Rodrigues, also quoted in the same article as linked?

I understand the new series based on comics written by Greg Rucka is premiering on CTV (Canada) and ABC (USA) tonight. Who else is planning on watching, either at broadcast time or later with PVR assistance?

Seems like a good question to answer publicly while I'm in the middle of carrying out a job search. Don't you think?

So...a partial list:

Space
Cartography
Languages
Indigenous culture in North America
Politics in other nations
Mapping the Milky Way Galaxy
Urban geography
Architecture
Urban design
Ottawa-Gatineau history
Canadian history
Street names
Psychology
Comic books
Chess
Soccer(known as "football" outside of Canada and the States)

There's others to be added to the list, but here's a starting point.

Home from work at last today, and I'm pondering a "wall" of sorts running from Mu Aquilae to Gamma Hydrae. Sure, there's member nations and colonies and outposts scattered well beyond it towards the coreward edge of the Orion Arm, but from Tyberius to Zakdorn? It's there.

Noticed the existence of this community [community profile] astronomy, which seems to have lain fallow for about 4 years. Those of us with a shared interest in such things might want to kick the tires, so to speak, and find out which other Dreamwidth users might be interested in reviving the conversations...?

You'll have your own opinions on the matter. That's alright. I haven't made up my own mind yet, but suspect that it depends on specific class and topic. Context will be very important here, as with so much else.

I can see it taking two years, but ten?

Now this is a disturbing development found whilst rummaging through techdirt.com tonight.

Snowden, Poitras & Others Sued For 'Billions Of Dollars' Spent By US Government In Response To Leaks
from the not-a-ton-of-crazy-in-the-filing,-but-not-a-ton-of-right,-either dept

Horace B. Edwards, Navy veteran and former Secretary of Transportation for the state of Kansas, is suing Edward Snowden, Laura Poitras and a handful of "Hollywood Defendants" for profiteering from the distribution of "stolen documents." This is supposedly being done on "behalf of the American people" ("John and Jane Does 1-10" listed in the "Plaintiffs" field).

What Edwards is seeking is a court-ordered "constructive trust," financed by the proceeds of Laura Poitras' Snowden documentary "CitizenFour," to offset the financial damage caused by the leaked documents.

More in the techdirt.com article at the other end of the link...so go have a look. Has Mr. Edwards maybe reached a bit too far here? I'm not a lawyer, although I do have an interest in how law works.

Anyone from Ottawa-Gatineau want to answer that question?(Questions of divinity aside, of course.)

I'm currently rummaging around the friendlists of my friendlisters lately, looking for new stuff of interest.

Also, posing this question to you: what blogs should I be watching now? Recommendations, anyone?

From this morning's hardcopy edition of the Ottawa Citizen, by David Reevely:

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Uncertainty+over+Lansdowne+cinema+engulfs+World+Exchange/8864752/story.html

A couple of reactions...

1. As I told Reevely on Facebook, having read the article, I'm surprised that the movie-screening rooms at Place de Ville are still intact after two decades, given that so much else of the underground mall there as originally built is now given over to governmental offices and meeting spaces.

2. I see that Diane Deans has reached a similar opinion to mine re: the downtown core and the expected influx of new residents adding to the need for cinema screening rooms. Could there be an impetus sufficient to rescue World Exchange, revive Rideau Centre *and* Place de Ville, and preserve Lansdowne, Mayfair and Bytowne?

Should I happen to find the time in the course of my days, are there any channels or podcasts that might be of interest re: astronomy issues and whatnot particularly re: objects outside our star system but within our wider Galaxy?

Go have a look, if you've got the bandwidth.

Saying it again: some forms of progress really are worth the trouble!

[livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll reminded me of the launch of Curiosity this morning.

Thinking back to Apollo X and the "Snoopy Visits the Moon" arc in Peanuts back in those days, it's a nice - accidentally timed, but who cares about that detail? - way of paying it forward to future generations of space explorers and cartoonists alike.

Best of luck to the Curiosity team!

If your town/city has them...what do they look like?
