dewline: Virus Don't Care (COVID-19)
As a reminder:

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/12/25/2213619/-Covid-is-not-done-with-us-It-s-just-getting-started-We-really-should-be-paying-attention

"The bottom line is that, even if you had a mild case and fully recovered from the initial Covid infection without getting long Covid, your immune system has been compromised. This makes it more difficult for your body to resist other pathogens, like RSV and influenza viruses, which would account for the increased rates and severity of those infections that are now being seen. There is also evidence that Covid causes permanent, long-term changes in the immune system that are similar to AIDS."

I've been infected once.

I'll say this again:

I do not consent to reinfection.

I will not submit to reinfection.

Yes, we're hitting the eight-billion mark in living humans this week. When I was starting grade school, I think we were at four billion.

Now, though, we have some debate over how difficult things are expected to become, how quickly, and in what ways exactly.

Looking at this for a few minutes:

https://www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/archive/2021/09/electric-cars-have-hit-inflection-point/620233/?utm_source=feed

I didn't think things were moving this quickly on the global scale in terms of cars and trucks. Yes, the manufacturing process is still messy as Hell. But are we making progress of some sort here? I think the answer to that question is "yes".

[personal profile] armiphlage, [personal profile] autopope, you might have some informed context to add here...? Anyone else?

Trump's gambling that he can leverage this mess to ensure his future remains locked into the White House.

Many object to having their lives redefined as acceptable collateral damage to achieve such ends.

David Brin speculates - as you'd expect an SF author to do - on where this might lead for the US in particular.

A prediction: Mr. John Crabb is going to get - pardon my choice of language here - shitcanned for what he said as transcripted and reported here.

He will not deserve it, and that is exactly why it will happen. He should be protected to every degree possible.

And I've just finished watching "Will You Take My Hand?"

I fully expect screams already in progress over the way the episode ended. Of shock. Of rage. Of joy.

According to CTV's Atlantic News web service, today is National Superhero Day.

Speaking of celebrations: tomorrow will be a big day for independent bookstores in Canada and the USA.

The Intercept reports on...interventions in the communications of convicts' families on social media. The potential consequences for all involved seem Problematic at best to my eyes. That the examples under discussion are in Texas does not make the matter less relevant.

On mapping the now and the possible future, there is a book that I now want: Connectography.

I read that the other shoe re: Timeline's finally been ordered dropped upon us all.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/the-hot-button/your-facebook-past-is-coming-back-timeline-mandatory/article2314218/

I am now considering the idea of just purging the account and starting over from scratch after the required period for data disposal on Facebook's has concluded. Does anyone have any arguments as to why I should go through with this?

To be honest, my main complaints about Timeline are about its design: it's visually cluttered in the extreme and looks as if it's highly bandwidth-dependent in a way that's hostile to dial-up users of the Internet. The privacy issues are secondary, but close behind the design issues.

...and I thank [livejournal.com profile] davidbrin for pointing it out to me:

I'm glad to have avoided items # 1, 5 and 8 - so far - but as for the rest? I'd like to see some of those predictions come true before I die!

Considering that, depending on your point of view, I've either (a) worked for it and stopped and re-started several times so far, (b) I'm an independent commentator/creator in the media, or (c) both...well, I have some cause for concern here based on these two items at Antonia Zerbisias' blog and at Ottawa Watch, regarding the future of Canadian media services.

Of course, I've also worked with/for American entertainment concerns in the past, and hope to do so in future. I'm working with an Australian as well right now. Whether that brands me as either wishy-washy, a hypocrite or someone who likes to keep eggs in multiple baskets for reasons ranging from pragmatic to personal satisfaction...well, time will tell.

I just know that, as a Canadian by birth and by choice, I'd like to see as many players on the field in my neck of the woods as possible, making as comfy a living as they like.

And I'm going to be mulling these articles over a goodly while, I think.

Any thoughts on the content in those two links from the rest of you?
