Referring to this commentary, perfectly timed for this Orange Monday in particular:

http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2025/04/living-in-interesting-times.html

Charlie, I fully expect to remain unsafe from US law - despite living on Canadian soil as a Canadian citizen by birth and by choice and despite having no plans to visit the States - for the foreseeable future. You know about the annexation threats the Vulgarian's made in recent months. This is another of the reasons why (a) Hegseth was hired as US SecDef and (b) why Hegseth in turn fired those senior JAG officers.

If Carney remains PMoCanada after April 28th, we might stand a better chance of riding at least some of this bad craziness out. Ditto if either Singh or May gets the job. If Poilievre and his Conservatives win, we all get handed over without a fight from "Ottawa" AKA the federal government. I do not expect a lot of fellow Canadians to permit themselves to be handed over quietly in any case.

Just saying this much will draw unwanted attention to me, I'm sure.

Yes, we're hitting the eight-billion mark in living humans this week. When I was starting grade school, I think we were at four billion.

Now, though, we have some debate over how difficult things are expected to become, how quickly, and in what ways exactly.

Of course, it doesn't feel like a dripping faucet right now. Closer to the firehose flooding the zone of the damned Steve Bannon's infamous metaphor.

I was inspired by this entry by [personal profile] autopope on his "home" weblog:

http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2022/04/behind-the-ukraine-war.html

As we were (rightly) advised to not centre western - including Canadian - political concerns in our comments on the Russian governance situation as Charlie understands it right now (his blog, his rules)...I'm going to post such comments here at my "home" blog where they belong:

I see Jason Kenney's government in the province of Alberta desperately trying to make sure Canada as a whole falls into the same governance trap as you describe Russia having fallen into. There's still a chance he might succeed with the help of a federal Conservative regime run by, say, Pierre Pollievre, Candice Bergen (not the American actor, the Canadian politician), Leslyn Lewis, or a few others I can think of. But the federal Conservatives first have to get a leader chosen this fall, and then that leader and whatever team they end up cobbling together has to have any hope of breaking up the confidence-and-supply agreement now in effect between the Liberals (led by Justin Trudeau) and the New Democrats (led by Jagmeet Singh).

I do worry that the Conservatives - or Maxime Bernier's "People's Party" or worse - will try to further "Putinize"/"Trumpify" Canadian society, worse than Harper already did despite his own personal antipathy to Putin.

Opinions from informed Albertans are definitely welcome here.

1. Cities have a positive value. We ignore and defy this truth at our peril.

2. The Indigenous, Métis and Inuit nations sent delegations to the Vatican regarding the crimes of the Residential Schools. They got a response they hoped for, but didn't quite anticipate coming so quickly or so clearly. More work to be done in the months ahead, yes...

I have a problem with the idea of letting the International Space Station just de-orbit and burn up. Yes, we've gotten over twenty years' operational life out of ISS. I understand that, and I see how the place is increasingly becoming a thing held together in no small part by Red Green/Jett Reno techniques. I'm still unconvinced that it can't be safely repurposed elsewhere in Sol system.

Specifically? If I had my way, I'd have ISS turned into our first orbital museum. We've missed multiple opportunities with the Skylab, Salyut/Almaz and Mir and it would be a good thing if that not be repeated here. Yes, there's impracticalities that have already been cited elsewhere, and I'm still resistant to accepting any of them as deal-killers.

This is the conclusion I've reached:

Erin O'Toole is a liar, damned once again by his own words on The House on CBC Radio this morning re: the CERB and other Pandemic-induced federal income supports. Also, his rhetoric about Canada-US relations right now. We know he wants us all in lockstep with the Trumpists, which is one of the worst choices we can make right now.

As for the man he'd like to replace with himself...

https://www.thestar.com/politics/political-opinion/2021/12/18/in-his-own-words-at-50-justin-trudeau-is-no-longer-working-in-his-fathers-shadow-and-sees-no-finish-line-in-politics.html

Yeah, there's people whom I would like to see replacing him. I've voted for them, and probably will keep doing so in hopes of getting better government. But given the odds of my side succeeding, I'll settle for succeeding in the goal of influencing the better angels of his team's nature. Which, during the past few years, has happened from time to time.

Okay, so I'm re-reading The Marvels now that I have an uninterrupted run of the first four issues. One of the key characters so far is Aero. Real name is Lei Ling, she's based out of Shanghai, and she's an architect in her "regular" job. Specifically created as part of a joint project between Marvel and NetEase, a Chinese tech firm. Some sort of co-op project that was meant to further support Marvel's efforts to get their comics works into mainland Chinese markets.

Does anyone know if architects in mainland China have to have Party cards - or be otherwise ideologically "certified" - in order to work these days? I'm curious about that detail.

Also, I suspect that Aero's involvement with the current incarnation of the Agents of Atlas might see changes, depending on geopolitical considerations.

(Looks at the un-person status now bestowed by the Xi regime upon Grace Zhao, director of the Eternals movie, as well as the reaction to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as symptoms of troubles for distribution of Marvel movies...)

Basically, it looks like Putin and Lukashenko have decided that it's time the rest of humanity was forced to rewrite the 1944 Chicago Convention on civil aviation on their terms. I think they're going to need a time-out session, don't you?

I just finished watching a re-run of Man of Steel. Before that, I was rereading David Brin's novel Earth and reading an opinion piece in today's Globe and Mail by Sue Gardner (once of CBC and Wikimedia) on Bill C-10.

I think Prof. Michael Geist has fair criticisms of C-10 as presently promoted by the Trudeau team, particularly Heritage minister Steven Guilbeault. I share those concerns. Sue Gardner pointed out other issues, issues that C-10 might still be refashioned to address better. Issues about the business model of the major internet giants, including Facebook, Twitter, Alphabet/Google, etc.. The model that requires pushing engagement over education...rather than both in tandem.

It also speaks to some concerns that Dr. Brin put forward in the course of writing Earth: oligarchy trying to hold onto the power it used to have by keeping humanity more divided than absolutely necessary. Those companies risk being more entrenched as an oligarchy itself or as part of an existing structure's newer components.

In case any of you are able to get around the paywall because you're subscribed or otherwise legally able to look at it directly:

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-the-crackdown-on-big-tech-targets-symptoms-rather-than-the-disease/

Also, my local public library provides ProQuest access to the article. Your own public libraries - wherever you are - may be able to provide similar access.

I think we have a problem here with this deal.

I'm annoyed that I missed or forgot to notice the implications of it for the better part of a year. Because Thomson Reuters owns the Globe and Mail as well, I think I'm going to have to stop buying that newspaper, regardless of what I think of the people working there. Am I wrong to believe that a realistic prospect?

Apparently, this is a thing to worry about. Especially with about a third of the planet trying to lurch back towards authoritarianism, fascism, "illiberal democracy", autocracy, etc. at whatever speed they can muster over the objections of the people they assert the right to master.

To some extent, as users of Dreamwidth, we have to subscribe to this POV ourselves or lose some degree of contact with one another. And we definitely consider that international communication and community to be a public good.

How do we deal with this?
