From Ottawa and London
Apr. 2nd, 2022 03:36 pmOn the nature and preparation of the Ottawa Siege:

Carole Cadwalladr, on having faced libel trial at the High Court despite having her facts straight:

I want a better accounting of so many things.

So...Toronto and Trek
Mar. 28th, 2022 01:08 pmI was wondering how long it was going to take for this to happen. Apparently, Strange New Worlds, the Pike-focused series, is doing location shoots around downtown Toronto...which will finally get to be itself on-camera.

Noting that the "police cruiser" was deliberately detailed to not look like an official Toronto police cruiser. There are several possible reasons for that: avoidance of "paid duty" fees, lack of script approval, and quite possibly not wanting their rented vehicle to be mistaken for a real cruiser for safety reasons unrelated to any other concerns.
(Although that faux prison bus with "Illinois State Penitentiary" detailing is poking holes in my theory.)

Amplification: Not in My Colour
Feb. 26th, 2022 06:56 pmA reminder to myself of a number of things, from Erica Ifill:

We don't get to stop worrying and investigating.

Since moving to Ottawa with my parents back in 1985, I occasionally used to use the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier here in Ottawa as an informal, outdoor confessional site. To air out my self-doubts, concerns, fears, grievances, hopes, etc.. Before certain fools used the National War Memorial as an outdoor urinal on the evening of Canada Day 2006.

Because of that first instance, the honour guard from May to November that Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was killed as part of in 2014 was instituted. A friend of mine had the horrible luck to be there to witness that shooting when it happened.

(Sidebar: that particular friend went on to run the local SF publisher Bundoran Press until its end early in Pandemic times.)
And now we're rolling up the Ottawa Siege, and dealing with consequences. Such as one documented by Evan Solomon:
https://twitter.com/EvanLSolomon/status/1495448514448527364
I cannot help but think that the honour guard is now going to be a year-round thing, and that my days of using the Tomb of the Unknown as an outdoor confessional during the winter months are about to end. It is a selfish thought, yes, and I own it as such.

A Trumpist Representative has offered asylum to the Convoy Crowd, comparing Canada to Venezuela.

Wow. This turned into an Unholy Mess. In addition to a serial cliffhanger story.

Starting 26 July 2021
Jul. 26th, 2021 09:38 amJob search continues this morning. Also, I've got the TV tuned to CBC News for the installation ceremony of Mary Simon/Ningiukudluk as Governor-General of Canada. Watching today's Ottawa Police Services Board meeting will have to wait for tomorrow, probably. Especially if I take in the Zoom meeting of the Ottawa Science-Fiction Society tonight after supper.
Maybe I go get that second vaccination dose tomorrow.
More as it develops...
End of May 2021 - Partial Plans
May. 31st, 2021 08:35 amOne more filling to take care of this morning. Getting to the dentist and back via public transit would - barring shopping errands on the way home - normally be expected to take about three hours. This, despite the relative proximity of the dentist's offices to home, because of transit route schedule peculiarities.
Job search continues. I've got my job-search diary spreadsheet opened up in Apple Numbers.
Listening to news coverage of the consequences of the "Kamloops" graves coming back to light...and "coming back to light" is a deliberate phrasing choice on my part. Canadians were warned by way of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's reports that evidence and graves like these would be rediscovered.
There's a meeting of the Ottawa Police Services Board starting at noon today. I expect that if it runs long enough, I might still get to see some of the deliberations via YouTube.

This is kind of hopeful

TV: Batwoman: "Rule # 1" (SPOILERS!)
Mar. 28th, 2021 11:27 pmThe one thing that threw me out of Batwoman tonight?
( Spoilers! )
Apparently this is about to get underway as I type this. Details available on YouTube or at Ottawa.ca if you're interested. Figure this is as good a way of researching how my city is run while I'm looking for whatever job(s) I can land, right? Catch as many of their open meetings as they care to stream live from City Hall?
And we're live...
And we're live...
SAFETY: Police Data Breaches
Sep. 22nd, 2020 05:58 pmMaybe it's the superhero comics fan in me, but this is the kind of thing that should get a Batman or an Iron Man's attention. Or more likely, Alpha Flight.
