Okay, so I've got a Zoom meeting with Ottawa SF Society - OSFS - people in a little over half an hour as I type this. If you want in on these things, we have a mailing list you can sign up for and chat with other OSFS members about. Contact and sign-up details over here. We're trying to stay compliant with the various forms of privacy law here, and we figure it's better to advertise and be ignored than to sign people up by ambush.

Playing e-mail tag with the company set up to sell me a new CPAP machine instead of the one I've been borrowing for the last eight months. Among other issues related thereto.

Lower Decks is okay, for Trek shows, cartoons, and sitcoms. I'm not sure it's been a wise idea to roll all three - Trek, animation and sitcom - into one TV series, but it does seem to be finding its own dedicated audience. I'm uncomfortable with the idea of trying to chase them off and shut the show down out of some misguided loyalty to "pure" Trek, whatever that is.

Picked up some comics over the weekend. Mostly catching up on stuff I've been missing.

More as it comes to mind.

Job search continues this morning.  Also, I've got the TV tuned to CBC News for the installation ceremony of Mary Simon/Ningiukudluk as Governor-General of Canada. Watching today's Ottawa Police Services Board meeting will have to wait for tomorrow, probably. Especially if I take in the Zoom meeting of the Ottawa Science-Fiction Society tonight after supper.

Maybe I go get that second vaccination dose tomorrow.

More as it develops...

During the current round of culling going on at my place, I rediscovered this ribbon from twenty years ago. I think I was one of three people who was editing the Ottawa SF Society Statement newsletter that year...and there's the confirmation:

Me, Joel Polowin - AKA [personal profile] bunsen_h - and the late and still-beloved Sharon Fall co-owned that nomination for Fan Achievement (Organizational).

And I just found out that [personal profile] bunsen_h is in hospital himself now.

Not for COVID-19. For spinal injury as a consequence of someone else knocking him off his bike. Thankfully, he's alive to tell the tale himself, and has done so tonight.

*winces*

FYI: he and I know each other from the Ottawa SF Society. I think he's one of the surviving co-founders.

I expect to be at this get-together tonight.

If you're able to attend, we'd be glad to see you!

This one specifically?

I think we may need a bigger room. I'll be checking in with the Fox and Feather this afternoon about that. 14 definites and 4 maybes is a good sign.

I'd announced a Friday trip to see Iron Man 3 in normal, 2-D format on the Ottawa SF Society's meetup.com page. The only thing I thought I needed to worry about was which theatre for us to meet at.

Either the movie theatre chains or Disney-Marvel - perhaps both, as I am not privy to the details - may have pre-empted my plans and forced me to wait for the DVD.

I'm not seeing any times for this upcoming Friday night at any Ottawa movie theatre via ottawakiosk.com as of this morning.

...before I rejoin the ranks of the un(der)employed again.

Yes, again.

It's become somewhat damaging to what peace of mind there is in this skull of mine, never mind the financials over the years. But it seems that a great many of us across the planet are still Expected to bear such burdens as part of the Price of Employability.

Pfah.

Anyway, the weekend was good in several senses: educational, entertaining, with a fair bit of travelling involved. Three Jane's Walk-affiliated tours of as many neighbourhoods: ByWard Market, Old Ottawa South and New Edinburgh. Roughly 350 photos of varying levels of quality taken in the course of those, from which I hope to cull a sufficient number to be of help on Flickr and possibly to a couple of publications as well. We'll see how that goes over the course of the next week.

The resumption of allergic reactions made enjoying the walking tours a bit more difficult than would have been preferred. But it should be over and done in a couple of additional weeks, if everything sticks to established patterns.

Speaking of travel plans: over on meetup.com, I've got movie dates set for the Ottawa SF Society re: Iron Man 3 (this upcoming Friday) and Star Trek 12 (two Fridays thereafter). Hoping to lock in a 2D-format showing as close to 7 PM as humanly possible, and keeping an eye on both the Silver City Gloucester and World Exchange Empire theatre complexes to that end. The meetup.com dates are officially set for Silver City, but that's subject to amendment.

We're trying something new here: multiple meetings in different neighbourhoods during a given month. You don't have to attend both. Just the one that's convenient to you.

Here's the one for Orléans:

There'll be a further announcement about one near to St. Laurent Mall shortly, I suspect.

Well, that was fun while I was there. I got to say "hi" to over a dozen people, old friends and new acquaintances alike. Pigged out on assorted snacks, some healthier than others. My thanks to the person responsible for the veggie tray in particular!

As to LJ friendlisters in particular, I said "hello" to [livejournal.com profile] bunsen_h and [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako and got started on a sketch of Cyclops - using the Jim Lee uniform design from 1992 - that will hopefully end up adorning both this LJ and her apartment wall in due course.

(Of course, I have sketches due to assorted younger relatives that take some degree of priority over that. Need to do some research on the Malevolence from Star Wars: the Clone Wars and the title characters of Angry Birds ASAP on that score...)

Also, in conversing with [livejournal.com profile] bunsen_h and other mutual acquaintances, I'm pleased to note that [livejournal.com profile] seanan_mcguire's authorial names - both of them - came up in conversation and the context was one of general satisfaction with her work.

One gaffe on my part: I promised posted instructions on how to get buzzed into the party venue over at meetup.com...and they didn't get posted. At least one person arrived at the front door and did not see the instructions promised, and as a result drove off with some degree of justly earned anger. I've already apologized for that, and we're going to have remedy things for next year's edition, as well as any other event similarly hosted.

I will note also, though, that we have phone numbers posted for several of our executive and appointed officers at ottawasfs.ca. Should we feel honour-bound by word given to any host volunteering their residence or facilities to us not to give out their contact info publicly, I'd suggest checking the ottawasfs.ca contact page for those phone numbers ahead of the scheduled date. We'll do our best to keep them updated.

In case anyone's interested, I'll be one of the speakers at tomorrow's Ottawa Science Fiction Society meeting at the Dalhousie Community Centre, corner of Somerset and Empress, at 2 PM. Topic is Social Media and Fandom.

Well, May 2011 is almost over. We've got a new-old federal government, the composition of which spooks the stuffing out of me. The weather's mixed-blessing right now, with off and on rain. The National Capital Race Weekend's half-done, with lots of people walking around in aluminized rain ponchos in the downtown core neighbourhoods. I just sent off a bunch of scans of photocopied maps to an editor for an article on Lowertown East I'm working on and next up is a trip to the local science fiction club's monthly-mostly meeting. Which I hope to see lots of people attending.

And we had somebody land on their head on the up-escalator at the Rideau Centre near Starbucks on Level 2 about half an hour before I posted this. He got escorted out by paramedics about ten minutes ago, and seemed to be okay, but they're closing off that escalator for the next few hours just in case. Not much of a show, really, and more than a little distressing for his family. I hope he ends up okay, whoever he is.

More as it occurs to me tonight...

Okay...a few quick notes:

I've just uploaded some pix from the October 2004 meeting of the Ottawa SF Society. This meeting was notable for having Julie Czerneda as guest speaker.

Posting this from Bridgehead's Glebe location while wrapping up an early supper. After which I expect to attend another meeting of the organizing committee for Can-Con 2011. Things are picking up steam on that score, and if I'm not able to update you on the preparations, it's my hope that another of the board will be doing so shortly after the meeting breaks for the night.

More as I think of it, unless you think of it first...
