After fifteen months, my current contract ends tomorrow afternoon. No idea what's next beyond returning a laptop computer to whence it came the following Monday and going back to the house to start the paperwork of the next job search.
I'm better off than many, worse off than others. Somewhere in the middle, I guess.
Good night and good luck.

Feb. 21st, 2025 11:35 pmI'm still here. Just busy with lots of stuff.
My current contract ends in three weeks. A contract that started in November 2023 and will have lasted 15 or 16 months. A new personal best for employment in my life. I'm hoping to do better with the next one, the political situation notwithstanding.
More later...

Apparently, there's a mass dismissal of workers in the works this weekend.
So you might want to heed Allison Gill's advice in the link below before reading any of your office e-mail.
No joke.

Jan. 28th, 2025 07:34 amI just self-tested again, and I still seem to be avoiding/delaying my second COVID-19 infection. So that's good news.
I'm scheduled to be laid off because end-of-contract on March 14th. This will have been a personal best at 15 months' steady work. That should improve the odds of being (re)hired somewhat.
The science-fiction club Zoom meeting last night fizzled due to various issues, so we're going to try again in two weeks.
I'm up to working on four map projects with the Tranquility Press fanfic collective.
More later.

Horror re: CBC Staffing
Dec. 4th, 2023 08:34 pmThis is not what I want for the future of the Public Broadcaster:

Here and I've been listening to this year's edition of the Massey Lectures for most of the afternoon while I was working on the new day job...

I have concerns(!) about the choice of phrasing in Treasury Board President Mona Fortier's arguments for a hybrid work model for those branches of the federal civil service that her branch of the federal cabinet has jurisdiction over.
Also, doubling down on "right of the employer" rhetoric is not helpful.
The civil service needs sufficiently safe workspaces to return to and, for those who do not or cannot drive, a sufficiently safe public transit system to use to get there. I'm not seeing that here. OC Transpo and STO must be allowed to return to "mask up!" rules for everyone who can medically manage it or this isn't going to do what the current government is hoping for. And the same requirement exists for public transit in any city that has such services and a federal civil service presence.
Without at least the mask rules back in place, we won't have safe federal workspaces. We'll have superspreader sites. Again.

(Yes, there's other arguments to be made for efficiencies, pollution/ecological considerations, savings on government expenditures, etc.. Other people are making those arguments.)

Job Search: Weird Workopolis Tips
Nov. 7th, 2022 03:13 pmWorkopolis is one of the job-search engines that started up here in Canada, and I maintain subscriptions to several alerts from that service by informed choice. Weirdness from them this past couple of weeks is as follows: I keep getting notes about jobs at Cargill out in Saskatchewan. I don't recall signing up for those alerts!
Checking In - 19 July 2022
Jul. 19th, 2022 10:52 pmI've applied on two jobs today. This after some 20-30 job boards and other relevant web sites checked out over the space of 5-6 hours. Also, practice time on Affinity Publisher because why shouldn't I use a personal, family project as a means of developing desktop publishing/book design skills?
The frustration continues, and I intend to keep putting one foot in front of the other as best I can for as long as I can in spite of that.
(For some reason, I imagined myself writing something a lot more detailed and involved than this.)

A Quick Job Search Note
Apr. 11th, 2022 12:12 pmAbout my job search diary:
- 25 pages thus far as of noon today on the Numbers spreadsheet I've set up for it.
- Four columns: date; employer contacted/resource used; intended job if specific; activity undertaken and result if confirmed.
- 623 entries, and yes, I count Dreamwidth these days as a "networking + research" activity. I'm sure the Conservatives will change the rules to disallow that for (un)employment insurance purposes if they get to form government again.
- Four weeks, going on five.
Flight and the Quiet Happy
Dec. 25th, 2021 07:17 pmThis morning, I tried to watch the launch of the new space telescope on YouTube, but it turned out I missed the launch time by about seven minutes. I still got to see enough to make me quietly happy for most of the rest of the day.
The household range is having problems. The heating elements on top are still working just fine for frying, steaming and boiling, but the burner box - the oven - is not in good shape. I'd call the process of heating anything "sluggish" if anything. We're not sure what's caused that, and calling for help is naturally Problematic right now. So cooking lasagna was cancelled in favour of relying upon Pizza Pizza last night.
My day job is on hold until after New Year's due to lack of people available to supervise.
*shrugs*
More as it comes to mind...
