Noting that today is - among other things - Red Dress Day, Dutch Liberation Day, Danish Liberation Day and Cinco de Mayo. Whatever you're observing in whatever way today, may the day be kind to you.

Including and not limited to:

Easter Sunday
Trans Day of Visibility
Indigenous Languages Day
75th Anniversary of Newfoundland + Labrador's Accession to the Canadian Confederation
The Disbanding of the Warsaw Pact
World Backup Day

I suspect you'll have additions to this list!

I saw flowers still in bloom outside this afternoon.

Also, a groundhog from less than two metres away. We noted each other's existence for a second and moved onward with our respective days.

Happier birthdays to [personal profile] lunabee34!

To those of you observing Juneteenth today, whether as celebration, commemoration, or some other way, I hope today is good for you!

About my job search diary:
  • 25 pages thus far as of noon today on the Numbers spreadsheet I've set up for it.
  • Four columns: date; employer contacted/resource used; intended job if specific; activity undertaken and result if confirmed.
  • 623 entries, and yes, I count Dreamwidth these days as a "networking + research" activity. I'm sure the Conservatives will change the rules to disallow that for (un)employment insurance purposes if they get to form government again.
  • Four weeks, going on five.
So there's that.

Seeing squirrels keeping busy on the streets and in the yards here.

Chris Hadfield noticed this morning that the smoke from the Pacific coastal fires has indeed reached us in southern Ontario, and announced same on Twitter.

My training video focus this afternoon is on Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. ("Document Cloud"?)

More as it comes to mind.

Remembering having posted a brief mention of a report on CTV News back in 2016...and since it's apparently four days away this year as of today, I wonder how those of us so inclined might want to observe the occasion.

Sidebar: This notice was prompted by my digging through old entries tagged "social media". I'm still trying to figure out whether or not to get a Twitter account finally. I'd made a promise to myself not to sign up while DT-45 is still running amuck there. And yet there's still lots of people whose commentaries and activities are worth keeping a virtual eye on over there.

Geese

The Canada geese are back in Ottawa, at Tunney's Pasture and the Revenue Canada Data Centre campus and the RA Centre soccer pitches. The first, CBC News has confirmed, and the latter two are extrapolations of past experience of visiting those neighbourhoods at this time of year. Also, the city's been seeing overflights of returning flocks making their traditionally noisy way northward over the last few days. Including last night. That was a noisy bunch in particular around 7 PM EST, I tell you now.

The non-human world is working its way around us, as ever.

My exam is done and "handed in". First time I've done one of those from home, and an interesting experience. No idea when I'll get my grades back.

Canada Day.

Some of you are celebrating this anniversary. Some of you simply commemorate it. Still others among you lament its existence...some with far more just cause than others, I'm sorry to recall.

In any case, I wish that this particular instance, today, is kind to you.

Unless you're a dedicated Nazi, Klansman or Putinist looking to make trouble. If you're in those three categories, I suggest you repent of that. Otherwise...?

There's a reason why one of my tags covers that topic:

I blame/praise this book: Regina: the Street Where You Live. It fired up an obsession that hasn't gone away.

I've been spotting what look like monarch butterflies rather often over the last month or two in eastern Ottawa. I'm hoping that counts as good news, ecologically.

Noting that this is being observed in a number of different quarters today. Not nearly as widely as many of us believe it ought to be, and thankfully, not as narrowly as some of us still dare to hope for.

But there's still work to be done to properly frustrate the latter group...

I was at an open lecture at Carleton last night discussing monuments and memorials. The guest lecturer of the evening, Karen Franck, observed with mild surprise that in recent years in the States, she didn't see poppies as part of the Veterans Day rituals...as opposed to her observations of people in Ottawa.

This has been gnawing at my brain for a while now. If a classic Kirby-style Helicarrier is as long as a Nimitz-class CVN, what should the innards look like in a "Master Systems Display"-type cutaway, such as you'll see on the TNG/DS9/VOY-era Star Trek shows?

So I took scans of Eliot Brown's work - other people had put them up years earlier - and started running with them.

The dorsal radome encasing the "island" needs work to make it symmetrical, and there's a lot of work after that to get it to the level of an Okuda or a Hansen...

Note to Disney/Marvel legal staff: If you'd rather, I'll take this down. I hope you'll leave it be, as I need the mental exercise of this project.

A couple of links to news items of interest, but not right now for that.

This is just to illogically note that I heard dogs bark today. But I saw no caravans moving onward.

Might be just an Adventures of Tintin flashback.

In this city, the adoption of this practice is - one suspects - already unofficially widespread. It's certainly problematic in several contexts.

But for some of the situations explained in the video...it may be for the best.

Wishing you well on your version of Thanksgiving.

To the First Nationals in the States reading this? I wish you well also, for sadder reasons that I also understand.

May we all see better days to come.

Did you know that August 9th was National Peacekeepers Day in Canada?

I shall go along with this meme o'the day, me hearties, whilst putting pen to parchment -- and a fine parchment it is -- in hopes of stirrin' souls to the spirit o' true justice with the finest ink of the times inspiring such visions, delivered by way o' the business end o' the King's pistols for once, odd as that may sound to pirates' ears.
