A sense of what I'm working on for fun right now.

Group therapy night, followed by some map-making.

Helpful.

Easter weekend coming up, and lots to do, I suspect.

I've been quiet here - though not elsewhere online - of late. The job search, caregiving errands, and map project have been taking up a lot of the time. Not sure what else to add at the moment. I might upload screencaps of the map project progress to Flickr in the coming days.

More later, okay?

So I subscribe to this mailing list called the Weekly Typographic, organized by the League of Movable Type. This week's instalment led me to an essay on highway signage as put together in the United States (and adapted to some extent in Canada as well):

https://www.beautifulpublicdata.com/the-style-guide-for-americas-highways-mutcd/?mc_cid=6948264b0b&mc_eid=b51f2e7655

Yes, friends and acquaintances, there is a style guide for these things, and it runs currently to over 900 pages in hardcopy format.

All those road trips my parents took me on over the years of grade school and high school...they had an effect on my choice of hobbies. License plates, highway signs...this is a part of why I got involved with Spacing Media, of course, as well as developing interests in graphic design along with comic books and science fiction in TV and film. I think I've discussed this before. Many of you reading this remember that. It seems a good idea to cover that ground anew for some of the people just starting to visit regularly.

Didn't visit anyone today. Instead, I listened to the radio, did laundry and shopping chores, and attended a Mac User Group meeting via Zoom. Oh, and worked on a design project on spec...which I expect to amount to nothing helpful to anyone.

Things that got done today:
  • Kept up the job search.
  • Tried to push onward with CPAP acquisition paperwork.
  • Mowed the front lawn.
  • Got some sketchbook time in.
  • Got walking exercise.
  • Updated my Affinity design software.
  • Returned an overdue book to the library without drama.
  • Stayed in touch with family.
  • Stayed in touch with friends.

Adding tonight:

  • Watching an interview of a respected author of political satire (Terry Fallis).

I just realized: I've had an account with them - through three ownership groups (Yahoo!, Verizon and now SmugMug) - for fifteen years now.

So...yay, me, I guess?

The more I learn about jobs in that field, the more I am reminded of something: I don't have the training, but I've always been interested in map design and technologies related to it.

1. Got an updated edition of Final Draft. Last time I did so for that software, they were at version 8. Currently, they're on version 11.1.3. Some day, I need to get back to practicing scriptwriting. It was only my best-graded class in Animation for TV at Algonquin, after all.

2. Started fiddling with an old font design project in Typetool 3 tonight after supper. I'm never going to be in the same league as John Roshell, Richard Starkings, or Ray Larabie, but for me, it's a skill I want to get back to (re)learning.

3. Grey and wet has been the day here in Ottawa-Gatineau. I was thinking of going downtown earlier today, but the weather didn't leave me comfortable with that idea.

Not all of these images are mine to take credit for. Each embed includes a link to the image's "home" page on Flickr where you can find that info.

There's a reason why one of my tags covers that topic:

I blame/praise this book: Regina: the Street Where You Live. It fired up an obsession that hasn't gone away.

So I've been making a few of these things.

BloodVacation
Platypus of Action

Weird that the three most recent should show up larger than the earlier two, but I expect that was a mistake of mine in the process of saving files from Adobe Illustrator. At any rate, enjoy if you're so inclined.

Yes, I might be persuaded to do commissions.

Comment to this post and I will pick five things I would like you to talk about. They might make sense or be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

The list I was given by [livejournal.com profile] ms_danson is as follows:
What do you want to be famous for, mapping, ice cream, new vs comfortable, the look of the prairies )

Planning to partake in some of the stuff going on re: Doors Open Ottawa's 2012 edition today. Is anyone else in town planning to do likewise?
