Tomorrow, the job search resumes. I don't know which of a half dozen of the more promising current leads will either prosper or fail.
In the evening, I'll be meeting over Zoom with the Bytown Mac User Group to discuss whatever news came out from the WWDC about Apple's product line over the weekend. That should be interesting.

Art/Tech: Cintiq, Part 2
Mar. 12th, 2022 09:36 pmI got the Cintiq hooked up to my iMac.
One more thing I need to do for this to work well: I need to find something - preferably not a book - to elevate the iMac on my desk so that I can fully view both screens at the office/studio workstation in the basement. The HP external monitor's going to go unused for a while, I think.

ByMUG - November 7, 2021
Nov. 7th, 2021 09:22 amSince it's the first Sunday of the month, my local Mac User Group is holding a Zoom meeting today. As the website notes:
"For November’s meeting we’re going to discuss impressions of the freshly-released macOS Monterey and the MacBook Pro laptops, along with trying to answer any other iOS/Mac-related questions as best as we can.
The meeting takes place on Sunday, November 7th, 2021, at 1 p.m. and we will send the link & instructions out via the mailing list about fifteen minutes before 1pm on Sunday."

One More Software/OS Annoyance
May. 27th, 2021 08:59 amNew annoyance that I've been dreading. I've only had this machine running MacOS 10.13.x for about a year. Gifted by a friend from my Mac user group. Now this news re: one of my favourite pieces of software:

I know, I know. It was coming eventually...

COMPUTERS: Photos Hanging on Closure
Nov. 15th, 2020 10:57 pmIt's stuck in "Closing the Library" mode, and has been for over 2 hours as I write this. A quick web search tells me this has been a common problem for people using Photos as part of the High Sierra version of Mac OS X. Some people have had to put up with it for 12-18 hours.
I'm not sure of which solution idea of the several published so far to trust here.

Numbers '08 has crashed three times on me today. I'd like to update to something more compatible with High Sierra but the App Store isn't carrying that version. If there's a legal fix for the issue, I'd be glad to know of it. Will keep looking.
(And I just found out: Keynote crashes whenever I try to launch it.)
And my address book files imported successfully into Contacts...but have since been reduced to two contacts. Not sure how that happened, and not happy about it.

TECH: Still Playing Catch-Up
Jun. 22nd, 2020 08:19 pmAnd now Tim Cook's saying that Apple's moving on from OSX.

I'm not done with that OS yet, Mr. Cook!

Computer Thought
Jun. 22nd, 2020 08:39 amI want to get my hands on a newer Mac. Obviously, finances are an Issue of Importance at my end right now since I'm between jobs. Even if they weren't, I don't think I'd want the absolute-latest top of the line machine.
But what I do need is something that will work with the latest versions of Clip Studio Paint and Serif's Affinity Suite of graphic designware, and the freeware planetarium software Gaia Sky. And since any job interviews I'm able to get scheduled are also likely to be conducted by way of internet video conference...
I'm already asking around via my local Mac User Group re: the hardware.
Meantime, as part of the job search process, I've been looking for photography work. Also, sharing some of the practice results here and on Flickr. So, I think I'm going to go for a walk and take pix of street signage and landmarks while I still have the weather for it this morning.

PHOTOS/OTTAWA: A Former Favourite Haunt
Apr. 4th, 2020 02:58 pmI spent more than a few Fridays (when I was between jobs) and Sundays (whether I had one or not) at Patty Boland Pub in the ByWard Market. Most of those Sundays were because of meetings of ByMUG, which is still an ongoing concern for users of Apple gear across Ottawa, thankfully. Patty's in the Market is no more, sadly.

JOB SEARCH: A Couple of Notes
Jan. 27th, 2020 01:31 pmHad a couple of nibbles from companies this morning. Not sure what's going to happen with that yet.
Also, I tried out the federal job bank site on the latest available version of Firefox via a slightly younger MacBook (not Pro)...and got the same user interface design issues as I did last week with a twenty-plus-versions-ago installation of the same browser.
Is it specific to Firefox on the Mac?

Photography Phrustrations
Sep. 23rd, 2019 06:53 pmI'm sure that I took more photos of the inside of Patty Boland's Pub than I have on file on my computer.
The reason why it bothers me that I can't find them: Patty's - a hangout of mine because it was the meeting site of ByMUG from its founding in 2006 until we moved over to Shares last year in 2018 - is shutting down. Their lease is up, and the new management hasn't had an easy time of it. There's more to the story than I know, surely, but I can't chase it down right now. Our founder and leader, Tom Leroux, asked me to dig up what pix I can find that I took of several of our earlier meetings at Patty's. Been trying for the last hour or so to carry out that task. It looks like I took fewer images than either Tom or I remember.
There's one dating back to 2006, and it looks...corrupted with unwanted linework. I took it back when I used a Canon A70. And I can't seem to find many more of them. Frustrating.

Closing Out Another Sunday
Apr. 14th, 2019 08:36 pmCleaning up some iPhoto archives tonight after re-watching Star Trek: Discovery.
Yes, I know that Apple's moved on to Photos now. I have a machine with that software loaded up. I seem to recall some issues with maintaining control over the photos I've taken and dumped from my cameras into my MacBook Pro over the years, so I'm leaving the archive in said MBP for now. If I'm remembering incorrectly, please explain what mistake I've made.
Also, I still want to upgrade the RAM and hard drive on the slightly newer MacBook-that-isn't-Pro before I move said picture archives to that machine. I've been advised by several friends in my User Group to want to switch that machine from HD to SSD, but I'm (still) skeptical about the value of the trade-offs there.
I can't afford to buy the newest gear every couple of years, and Apple management's not making it easier for me with their growing desire to minimize the ability of owners to customize our gear once we buy it.

Lost History: the Mac Group
Jan. 26th, 2017 03:34 pmThe first place that ever sold me Mac gear was the Mac Group. Back then, they were a second-story walkup in an office building off of Gladstone, near the city's traffic management centre and the O-Train tracks. I still have that machine.
They're apparently gone now. Three moves later, and the website's gone, the phone number is "this cellular number is currently unassigned" and their Facebook page has been left fallow for two years, apparently.
Last I visited them, they were in a second-story walk-up off of Nelson near the Rideau Library.
I miss them.
