It's been fixed. City Hall's website is back to normal now. Since I posted my complaint on Bluesky...

That website is back online, if you're interested!

Is anyone having issues accessing stellarcatalog.com at the moment?

I had to amend my ArtStation profile. I'm getting asks about wedding anniversary illustration gigs, and between my day job, the map project and the caregiving trips, this is going to fall by the wayside.

Again.

So I've started setting up a presence there.

Hey, for those of you who know your way around Mandy-dot-com: how do you dispose of your profile when you've only gotten started creating it and realized they expect you to pay for its maintenance?

Paywalled job-search resources, right?

Ugh.

*facepalm*

There's a thing that bugs me about Randstad: when I look for jobs they're trying to get people matched to and type in "Ottawa" in the location box, I keep getting entries for Hamilton, North York, Concord and so on.

Most people living in Ontario will, I expect, understand why this is an issue for me.

By way of explanation, with the note that North York is part of metropolitan Toronto. Source of map is Wikimedia Commons...

Is anyone else who's looking for work in Canada having trouble accessing this website today?

Never mind!

An update: I can look at the listings from "outside". But if I try to log into my job-seeker's account, the login attempt doesn't work.

That's a problem.

Meanwhile, I'm listening to The Current on CBC Radio, and they're discussing the risks faced by homeless people. The return to this ongoing discussion were prompted by yesterday's murders in Langley, BC.

Yes, I maintain a job-seeker's account with the federal tax authorities. You try to find work in Ottawa-Gatineau without resorting to the various federal departments and agencies and see how far you can get, okay?

Anyway, I've been trying and failing to log in since Thursday. Not sure what's going on. I've left notes with several people. Moving on to continue the job search through other resources while I wait for replies.

Is anyone else here using that service to look for jobs and having problems logging in?

I'm done with shopping for the afternoon, and getting laundry underway. That's expected to be a short chore.

In the meantime, I've tried to set up my digital subscription to the Toronto Star, partly because retail delivery to my closest grocery outlet is stalled today, partly due to the need to support democracy in general, and partly due to tax advantages. I would much prefer the hardcopy edition being delivered to my door, but that seems to be a problem for the Star to arrange for Ottawa subscribers in general these days. One wonders how closely they're tracking digital subscription stats by hometown. Might there be a "tripwire" number that - if achieved - they start looking at arranging home hardcopy delivery for qualifying communities?

Problem: I get this message when I make the attempt...

CityID field contained invalid characters. (19)
There was an error creating your order. If this problem persists please contact customer service.

I've e-mailed their circulation desk about that issue and hope to get useful information soon.

I would also much prefer a locally-owned newspaper operating in tune with the Atkinson Principles, as either a subscriber, a prospective employee, or both. (This isn't the first time I've mentioned that topic here.) Seeing as both major anglophone daily papers in Ottawa-Gatineau are currently owned by Postmedia, that's not going to happen unless Postmedia is broken up or the major chartered banks have an attack of social responsibility on a grander scale than I'm used to.

More on this topic another time. Hopefully soon.

Spark is discussing the problem of "link rot" this week. It's an ongoing issue for all of us, I suspect, depending on how old our respective weblogs are. I'm guilty of aggravating the problem by way of not correcting links between blog entries here since moving the whole blog over from LiveJournal to Dreamwidth back in 2017, for example.

Also, I think that paywalls aggravate the "link rot" problem. But what to do to keep those old news services' archives preserved and available without undermining peoples' efforts to keep earning whatever living they can?

I've been avoiding LinkedIn because I'm worried about being pushed into declaring for one line of work over others that I have experience and skills for and interest in. Now, it's starting to feel like I'm getting messages from Indeed that are prompts to do exactly what I believe I can't afford to do.

I started looking at the training videos available via Skillport for that version.

I see from their website that the development teams have already moved onto v. 9 as a stable release, and I suppose I'm going to be playing catch-up for some months if I really want to understand what I can do with this and how to do it...?

A little typographical device, often used, not really noticed. And I just found out from the Weekly Typographical podcast that this group - devoted to the device - exists:

Meanwhile, let me test something here:

(Just a little stealing-back of a symbol with that last one, and since the emoji options on this version of Mac OSX allow the colour variations now...except that things get weird when the text appears in GMail notices of replies to this entry...

See?)

Today's video tutorial study plan:

1. Wrap up my opening studies of Balsamiq
2. Resume studies of Adobe InDesign
3. Make time to practice with various features of Clip Studio Paint. Possibly practice designing a brush for use in my own illustration projects. Also possibly, just drawing stuff in general.
dewline: Text: Searching and Researching (searching)
A job I had a year or two ago allowed me to learn about the existence of software branded Balsamiq. So today's video tutorial studies finally went in that direction, seeing as I'm still interested in web design.
