Transit: Activism Ill-Thought Out?
Sep. 10th, 2024 07:22 amI have just signed up to delegate to the Ottawa Transit Commission about the upcoming service changes. I have next to no script for this. I am almost certain to have to do this while I'm working on my day job, and it will be over Zoom.
I have somewhat less than two days to decide whether or not to settle for a written submission instead, and if so, what to write for it.

Cell Phones: An Achievement Unwanted
Sep. 23rd, 2023 08:34 pmI've finally managed it: cracked the glass on a cell-phone screen by drop-throwing it to the floor by accident in the process of unplugging it. Didn't even notice the crack in the screen until I got back to the house from the day's errands.
It still works as designed, yes. But that it took me four phones to get to this point?

Well, remember I was talking about Star Trek last posting?
Seems I've missed recording everything from the fourth episode of Prodigy onwards. So I can't watch "Time Amok" - aired last night - as I planned. No, I'm not sure about my access to Crave here.
Foot? Meet phaser beam. Phaser beam? Foot. Consider yourselves introduced.

Tech issues postponed the job interview. We'll try again next week, exact date and time to be determined. And this time, I'll have Microsoft Teams at hand to use. And my cell phone bill is finally paid up again, which solves another issue.
(I'm mildly surprised that the desktop Mac version of MS Teams works at all with High Sierra.)
Getting support lined up regarding certain family health issues.
Applied to two jobs today. One application immediately got a "no thank you".
Another application from a couple of weeks ago finally got a "no thank you" of its own. They went with another temp company's candidate, seeing them as better suited. It happens.
No jackpot lottery win for me either.
More on other stuff later.

Saturday Chores
Aug. 7th, 2021 12:50 pmI'm done with shopping for the afternoon, and getting laundry underway. That's expected to be a short chore.
In the meantime, I've tried to set up my digital subscription to the Toronto Star, partly because retail delivery to my closest grocery outlet is stalled today, partly due to the need to support democracy in general, and partly due to tax advantages. I would much prefer the hardcopy edition being delivered to my door, but that seems to be a problem for the Star to arrange for Ottawa subscribers in general these days. One wonders how closely they're tracking digital subscription stats by hometown. Might there be a "tripwire" number that - if achieved - they start looking at arranging home hardcopy delivery for qualifying communities?
Problem: I get this message when I make the attempt...
CityID field contained invalid characters. (19)
There was an error creating your order. If this problem persists please contact customer service.
I've e-mailed their circulation desk about that issue and hope to get useful information soon.
I would also much prefer a locally-owned newspaper operating in tune with the Atkinson Principles, as either a subscriber, a prospective employee, or both. (This isn't the first time I've mentioned that topic here.) Seeing as both major anglophone daily papers in Ottawa-Gatineau are currently owned by Postmedia, that's not going to happen unless Postmedia is broken up or the major chartered banks have an attack of social responsibility on a grander scale than I'm used to.
More on this topic another time. Hopefully soon.

Weather/Climate Radio Infrastructure
Dec. 30th, 2020 02:27 pmTaking a brief moment from my video tutorial studies of Drupal 8 - which I think I may need to rewatch several times each today - to pass this along: apparently Canadian federal penny-pinching is getting too line-item-fussy about weather alert-related infrastructure again? Details here:
https://saskboy.wordpress.com/2020/12/30/weather-alert-dismantling/
If Jon Klein's misunderstood the situation, please pass along corrective information. I'm certain that he'll appreciate the corrections once he confirms their accuracy.
If he's got it right, and you're a Canadian citizen, please contact your federal MP ASAP.

Yeah.
So this happened, apparently to one of the characters connecting those two Marvel teams.
Or at least, their existence was a connection between the two branches of the Marvel Universe until now.
Looks like this particular creative choice backfired, perhaps not unlike "One More Day/Brand New Day" backfired on the Spider-Man comics titles. We'll see what happens in the months and years ahead, I suppose.

Remembrance 2020
Nov. 11th, 2020 05:44 amSo this is Remembrance 2020.
Normally, I'd be at the War Memorial for the ceremonies later this morning. But, being a Time of Pandemic, what's normal right now?
Also, I found myself getting out of bed for breakfast at 430 AM. By the time I realized what I'd done, I'd already finished eating. So comfort is never going to be an issue today. Front-line troops, aircrew and sailors across the decades have long had it far worse than this.

About My Absence Yesterday
Jul. 22nd, 2020 03:37 pmMy MacBook Pro was developing weird symptoms after I swapped in my new modem yesterday, so it became a necessity to get the file migration to the new iMac underway. A couple of false starts, but everything seems to be getting into proper order now. A few updates to some software, others look to be useless now, which is all normal enough. But the file migration took all day and most of the night yesterday into way early this morning. So I've lost a full day's job search activity.
Back now, though.
Back now, though.
The Batman and the Globe and Mail
May. 1st, 2020 01:30 pmThis may be a mildly amusing error, and no more than that. In today's hardcopy edition of the Globe and Mail, that storied newspaper reminds us that On This Date, Detective Comics # 27, featuring the first appearance of the Batman was allegedly released to the public. The decades-long tendency of comics publishers to release issues two months ahead of the published cover date has apparently not occurred to the people handling that that item on page A2.
Therefore, a possibly amusing error.

Mistaken Identities, Revisited
Apr. 19th, 2020 09:21 amThis morning, I got a note in my GMail account with the sender flagged as "US Concealed Online".
It is the latest of several instances per day that I have been mistaken for other people sharing my personal name-family combination over the years since getting an e-mail account. There have been e-mails seeking assorted other published authors; some from a Home Depot location in Ohio seeking the renewed custom of a nearby, other Dwight Williams; a few seeking a "private military contractor" also sharing my name.
Plugging my name into say, Google or Duck Duck Go for example, gets me hundreds of other named-alike people. Doctors, actors, end-credits production staffers, writers, athletes, fugitives, convicts, and on the list goes. I'm nowhere near either the best- or least-known of my ilk. There is comfort in this at the moment. Some amusement, some consternation, but also comfort.
Your kilometrage will vary.

MAC/TECH: Intuos 4 Needs New "Pen"
Feb. 27th, 2020 07:15 pmUpdate 1: There may be a solution in hand by Saturday. Stay tuned.
Update 2: The solution is in hand. Thanks be to the Ottawa Comic Jam network of artists.
