DC Universe: A Charlton Point Question
Mar. 12th, 2023 06:26 pmHow does anyone get Texas as the host of Charlton's Point, when the comics-publishing company that city was named for was based in Connecticut?

I have this horrible sense that the current executive staffing at DC Comics is about to be undone. Looking at what's already happening at CNN and HBO Max is clueing me in.
The nightmare scenario I expect based upon reports re: changes at those other branches of WB-Discovery's corporate empire: trade paperback collections and e-subscription access might be severely curtailed in order to reduce revenues going to creators of those older works; the current payroll being targeted for purges of non-Trumpists; the DC character roster being ethnically "white-washed" and otherwise altered to serve Trumpist audiences.
Am I wrong to expect this?

I might have returned to reading the DC Universe titles for this. Maybe. It's an intriguing set-up, and a definite return to a saga of generations for the DCU line of comics series.

OBITS/COMICS: Jim Janes
Sep. 5th, 2020 07:35 pmThis was the first LSH artist I really knew to pay attention to. I first saw his work in that Secrets of the Legion of Super-Heroes mini-series back in 1981. It was the original version of that team, pre-Crisis, and the mini-series covered the backstories of the members and the group as a whole. And DC was doing mini-series before Marvel picked up the habit, clearly.
I don't know much about his history as either comics artist or animator otherwise. Just this. I never got to meet the guy, not that I can remember. And because it was the Legion that he introduced me to, it matters to me that he's gone now.

WB Purging DC?
Aug. 10th, 2020 09:11 pmWord from The Beat, Bleeding Cool, Comic Book Resources...reporting on massive layoffs at DC Comics effective today.
I stopped reading the bulk of their current series back when Flashpoint v.2 ended, which brought the lesson to me that sooner or later your money will be considered "too old" for the editorial regime of the moment. A lesson that many fans older than me learned in the late 1980's in the wake of Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Eight years before that mini-series was something called the "DC Implosion". It was similar in scale and scope to what I'm reading about at the moment.
I worry about what will come of this "restructuring".

Trying to get in some practice time with Clip Studio Paint every day. Which isn't easy, given the other job search activities I have to tend to as well as this.
Also, facial structure, line weight, fabric folds, all need work too.
The original Question was created by Steve Ditko, and the trademark is currently held by DC Entertainment's comics division.

TV: Batwoman, Recast?
May. 19th, 2020 07:28 pmYes, I just saw the reports on Variety and THR, and some discussion on TrekBBS.
Perhaps this isn't the surprise that I first thought.
Between the spinal injuries on the set, the allergic reactions to costume-related make-up, the similar and more permanent injury of a production assistant on location, the constant abuse from toxic "fans" that she's certainly been dealing with, whether the abuse is because she's "out" or because her character is...and then, there's the simple fact of the "60-80 hour work weeks 9 months a year in the Vancouver rain" before any of the rest of that gets factored in.
Whatever the reasons for her choice, I hope Ruby Rose has a good life, that she lives long and prospers with peace of mind and heart through it all. Thank you for your performances. You brought joy and wonder, danger and excitement, and a set of ideals behind it all. Thank you for taking this chance.
To whoever's next up to wear that cape and wig and ride those motorcycles: whoever you are, I look forward to seeing you do your best with the people around you on both sides of the camera. I hope you find your own joy and wonder in this work in progress, and that it will keep you around for the long term. And I thank you for taking this chance.

The Batman and the Globe and Mail
May. 1st, 2020 01:30 pmThis may be a mildly amusing error, and no more than that. In today's hardcopy edition of the Globe and Mail, that storied newspaper reminds us that On This Date, Detective Comics # 27, featuring the first appearance of the Batman was allegedly released to the public. The decades-long tendency of comics publishers to release issues two months ahead of the published cover date has apparently not occurred to the people handling that that item on page A2.
Therefore, a possibly amusing error.

Fear for DC Comics as a Publisher
Jul. 31st, 2019 10:13 pmSomething of concern:

I stopped reading their ongoing series after the second Flashpoint mini-series, but have been occasionally picking up trade collections of favoured material from my era of preference. Evidently, I should be doing more of that, and faster.

Perception was kind enough to upload a case study of their work on Batman v Superman this week. That case study includes a map of the Metropolis-Gotham region as envisioned for the movies DC and WB have been making.
That map clearly does not hew to the maps of the two cities as published in the comics over the last couple of decades. Granted, the production team had the right to plant the two super-cities ten miles and a harbour apart from each other. Speaking for myself alone, I'd hoped that Byrne's Six Boroughs as originally drawn up for Metropolis in 1986, as well as the islands of Eliot Brown's 2000 map of Gotham could've made the cut.
Oh well...this is its own thing to begin with.
