Something of concern:

I stopped reading their ongoing series after the second Flashpoint mini-series, but have been occasionally picking up trade collections of favoured material from my era of preference. Evidently, I should be doing more of that, and faster.

He never thought he'd go do another war movie after Passchendaele. Then, he went to Afghanistan...

I guess I've got to see this movie, one way or another.

You know that line about Ottawa-Gatineau: it's a company town and that company is the federal government. There's a certain amount of truth to it, but as you know from reading my LJ - and my contributions to Spacing Ottawa - that's not all there is to the region.

Back in 1990-1992, I went to Algonquin College for the second of two diplomas earned there. That second diploma was in animation for television. Being sidetracked into other lines of work to pay off the student loan, I never got around to working at any of the studios at home or abroad...but those studios "at home"? There's still a few based right here.

One of them is PIP Animation, and an upcoming achievement of theirs got profiled by CBC News recently - by their own admission, for promoting CBC's entertainment programming side of things - that you might be interested in.

Hint: it involves Donald Sutherland.

No, I didn't work on this. But it's good to see the local entertainment industry grow a bit more capacity...

Looking at this:

Much as I like the idea of ILM spreading more work around to the rest of the planet (including to friends and friendly acquaintances in Vancouver), the idea that they might leave California behind...disturbs me deeply. It strikes me as Offensive on some primal level.

Just saying.

Update: I checked the eBay page for the car. It's already found a buyer. Sorry! :-(

This is a disappointing development.

Yes, I know many of the reasons why readers, creators and publishers alike might prefer this setup. I disagree with them because, well...hardcopy comics still don't need batteries or a net connection. Also, avoiding DRM hijinks meddling with my computer hardware.

While I can still afford a working computer and internet connection, that is.

If there's one thing my friendlist here, the one over on Facebook, and contacts elsewhere across the Web have confirmed in my mind, it's this: comics are for everyone what wants 'em.

Or at least, they ought to be.

That includes women, people of "other" sexual identities, people from across the ethnic spectrum, across the religious spectrum, across the age ranges, et cetera.

What bugs me is that some people whom I thought knew this at least as well as I did, if not better than I do...well, it seems they don't know it very well. Or if they did, they've forgotten the fact.

Worse, it's not even a surprise. More like a nagging bout of anger at something that should've been behind us all by now.

Fortunately, other people are already calling that first bunch out on that point.

MyDearPeabody, keep on calling them out on it.

It's going to be part of how we keep growing the industry pie back to where it ought to be.

More on other stuff later.

...at the National Arts Centre. He led off this year's Celebrity Speakers Series covering talks about the Canadian Artist in Society.

As some of you know and others have guessed, I've been a fan since I first got hooked on Due South back in the day. It was a good show for me, and apparently for a lot of people around the world then and since.

I may safely say that, as once before at a journalists' association function here a few Octobers ago, just days before H20 first hit the airwaves via CBC, he did not disappoint.

More after the cut... )
