Okay, so I'm re-reading The Marvels now that I have an uninterrupted run of the first four issues. One of the key characters so far is Aero. Real name is Lei Ling, she's based out of Shanghai, and she's an architect in her "regular" job. Specifically created as part of a joint project between Marvel and NetEase, a Chinese tech firm. Some sort of co-op project that was meant to further support Marvel's efforts to get their comics works into mainland Chinese markets.

Does anyone know if architects in mainland China have to have Party cards - or be otherwise ideologically "certified" - in order to work these days? I'm curious about that detail.

Also, I suspect that Aero's involvement with the current incarnation of the Agents of Atlas might see changes, depending on geopolitical considerations.

(Looks at the un-person status now bestowed by the Xi regime upon Grace Zhao, director of the Eternals movie, as well as the reaction to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as symptoms of troubles for distribution of Marvel movies...)

I recognize that logo on Lemont Brown's shirt in today's edition of Candorville.

So, years and years back, when I had more confidence in my art skills, I did a spot illustration for a friend's serialized novel about super-heroics gone awry. The friend was - and remains - Lee "Budgie" Barnett. He prefers "Budgie" for reasons you can consult his blog or the pinned thread on his Twitter account about.

The novel was originally serialized a couple of ownership groups ago on Comic Book Resources, and while it's no longer on that website, you can still get either ePub or Kindle editions for your entertainment.

Details here.

More on other topics as the day goes onward.

So. Action Comics # 1 + 83 years today, too?

So, new season, new title character starting tonight...

Watched Black Panther on ABC tonight.

I am mildly surprised that they decided to not do commercial breaks for this showing. And I shouldn't have been surprised by that, not in today's context.

I am mildly annoyed by the removal of Shuri's middle finger moment. A small thing, but still...

I think Disney HQ got this mostly right tonight. But I don't and shouldn't get to have the last word on this point.

Watching Black Panther on ABC thanks to cable TV tonight!

Okay, that's it. Show's over.

I cried. I'll probably tell you when in the comments at some point.

But I think I'm okay with the ending for this set of stories, in Agents of SHIELD.

Trying to get in some practice time with Clip Studio Paint every day. Which isn't easy, given the other job search activities I have to tend to as well as this.

Also, facial structure, line weight, fabric folds, all need work too.

The original Question was created by Steve Ditko, and the trademark is currently held by DC Entertainment's comics division.

Remembering having posted a brief mention of a report on CTV News back in 2016...and since it's apparently four days away this year as of today, I wonder how those of us so inclined might want to observe the occasion.

Sidebar: This notice was prompted by my digging through old entries tagged "social media". I'm still trying to figure out whether or not to get a Twitter account finally. I'd made a promise to myself not to sign up while DT-45 is still running amuck there. And yet there's still lots of people whose commentaries and activities are worth keeping a virtual eye on over there.

Is everyone else on Dreamwidth who's reading [syndicated profile] pressthink_feed doing so at source rather than on Dreamwidth?

I like reading about journalism. The business, the ways and means, the people who do the work...all of it. I praise/blame Spider-Man and Superman for that, at least in part.

(For that matter, assuming that the Big Development in the Superman comics titles is old news to the public by now...how's the fact of Clark Kent going public about his dual-ID going over so far?)

This afternoon, on Ontario Today, that CBC Radio phone-in show was discussing the movies of last year, and which ones mattered to us most.

Okay, here's my list:
  • Black Panther
  • Molly's Game (Yes, it premiered the prior year, but since I rewatched it at a cinema...)
  • The Death of Stalin
  • The Post
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp (I still say it should be The Wasp and the Ant-Man.)
  • Shock and Awe
  • Solo: a Star Wars Story
  • First Man
  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

A grand total of ten. I slipped a little this past year, and I blame both chores and finances. And I'm thinking that there's one I forgot to mention...

(Since revised to include The Death of Stalin. Which I should not have forgotten.)

Yes, I saw it.

Need sleep, so I'm not commenting right now. Tomorrow, though...

So I saw this article this morning:

Ethics debate as pig brains kept alive without a body
By Pallab Ghosh Science correspondent, BBC News

My super-hero comics-invested brain immediately thought of DC Comics' Robotmen, Bob Crane and Cliff Steele. Shortly thereafter, there was Anton Ivanov, the self-described "Superior" from Marvel+ABC's Agents of SHIELD TV series...

...nor the worst. My lungs, sinus and throat might disagree again about that, of course. It hasn't been the first such occasion, nor will it be the last. I've been sticking close to home this weekend owing to those medical issues, one shopping expedition aside.

Got caught up on Agents of SHIELD, specifically "Principia". Interesting to see some of these loose ends from across what I still hope to be the first four years of the series: gravitonium (but where's Franklin Hall?), Werner von Strucker, Project TAHITI's consequences for Phil Coulson, and so on.

Not sure how much further I want to go into discussing the episode here, but for those interested in discussing it, I do expect spoilers in the comments.

It occurs to me that, despite the relative proximity of Beta Pic to Sol at 64 lightyears (barring updates from GAIA DR 2 or later), we're still not ever going to see any planets finish forming in our lifetimes. Nor that of our entire biosphere, probably.

The same goes for the protagonists of Star Trek, Babylon 5, The Expanse, Honor Harrington, the Legion of Super-Heroes, the 31st Century incarnations of the Guardians of the Galaxy, etc..

Here's what set off my thought:

Saw Wonder Woman today. Good movie.

The one minor annoyance? Seeing the current-as-of-today US Treasury Secretary's name listed as an "executive producer" in the end credits (but not the main-on-end credits).
