This is still a work in progress. I am not happy with legibiity of the place names, not yet. I've switched most of the labelling over to Helvetica for now, pending a decision on what to switch the labels to.
If you know of any communities and connections that I should add to this map, please tell me!

This is part of a map I've been designing with help from assets from Maptorian. I was inspired by a map in the old Dent's Canadian School Atlas devoted to Canadian airline connections across the country, as well as by a recent job interview for a graphic design position.
I'm making this with Adobe Illustrator CS4, in case you're wondering.

Helicarrier Innards
Jan. 3rd, 2015 10:16 pmThis has been gnawing at my brain for a while now. If a classic Kirby-style Helicarrier is as long as a Nimitz-class CVN, what should the innards look like in a "Master Systems Display"-type cutaway, such as you'll see on the TNG/DS9/VOY-era Star Trek shows?
So I took scans of Eliot Brown's work - other people had put them up years earlier - and started running with them.
The dorsal radome encasing the "island" needs work to make it symmetrical, and there's a lot of work after that to get it to the level of an Okuda or a Hansen...

Note to Disney/Marvel legal staff: If you'd rather, I'll take this down. I hope you'll leave it be, as I need the mental exercise of this project.

Again: Small Press Book Fair Spring 2014
Jun. 7th, 2014 07:42 amIt's at the Jack Purcell Centre, just off of Elgin Street. Look for the Starbucks and Elgin Street Elementary School and turn west at that intersection.
It runs from 10 AM to 4 PM this time.
Apparently, http://salgoodsam will be there for a good chunk of the afternoon as well. So you might want a look at his table.
I'll be offering fresh copies of Local Hero # 1, the remains of my Ashcan Sampler stocks from previous years, and whatever sketches you're willing to commission!

A bit of portfolio-based self-promotion...
Mar. 8th, 2014 08:27 pmI hope I'm not breaking the rules by doing this, but I need to do some more outreach, particularly by making note of a "portfolio" of sorts hiding in my Flickr sets:
https://secure.flickr.com/photos/dwight_ew/sets/72157614621082522/
For map designs:
https://secure.flickr.com/photos/dwight_ew/sets/72157630449497178/
More general computer-assisted design work (with some duplication from the first two sets):
https://secure.flickr.com/photos/dwight_ew/sets/72157633992232789/
I'm linking to this to show some range of skills available, if anyone here needs any extra help with projects that aren't particularly time-sensitive between now and the end of May. It's my hope that after the end of May, I can include those time-sensitive projects as well.
Hoping this is useful to at least one of you reading this LJ...

What if the first super-hero in the world was a British ad man?
What if that first super-hero got his origin by way of an experiment gone wrong via courier service mishap?
What if that first super-hero had his attempt to formally go public messed up by a news service's infamous penchant for spelling and grammar mistakes?
Lee Barnett's got a recently-revised theory to entertain you with. He's been serializing it for the past few days, and it'll continue for a few weeks yet: You'll Never Believe a Man Can Fly. He explains some of what's in the works here. You may want to follow along, or purchase an e-book edition as offered at his end of things.
Oh, and one of the illustrations accompanying the text is one of mine.

Speaking of Ambitions
Nov. 29th, 2012 10:41 amI mentioned to
mariness that I'd like to get out of my current tax bracket and maybe even have to pay a little extra income tax in future to preserve all those services our various levels of government provide that I consider of High Value and Satisfaction: health care, CBC, search and rescue, the National Research Council, NSERC and SSHRC, national defence, space exploration...you get the idea.
With that in mind, I'd like to remind you that I have these little things I've written and/or drawn, either on my own or in order to contribute to other people's stuff.
I also take commissions for sketch work. As I said on Facebook:
box_in_the_box pointed this link below out to me. As it happens, I don't have any scheduled work right now, just a lot of regular day-job hunting, presents for younger relatives to draw, and some writing on my own schedule. So if anyone wants a sketch, we can talk. I won't draw X-rated stuff, but we can talk. I might even be able to provide a "deliverable" within a month or two at worst...
