"The Great Reopening" is the nickname given by Matt Galloway on The Current this morning to the process of (supposedly) restarting the economy around the world. I'm wondering flat out, as are some of Mr. Galloway's guests this morning, if this isn't too soon a restart being pushed on us all by our "betters".

And here I sit, checking job boards as I listen to The Current and write this post...and I've been checking job boards whatever my circumstances.

Yes, I'm on the Broadbent Institute mailing list for reasons.

So I'm looking this over right now...an opinion piece by one Marshall Auerbach. I don't recall reading their work before, but I want to look this over carefully.

It costs money to live.
It costs money to earn a living.
It costs money to look for work.
It costs money to live while looking for work.
It costs money to learn a skill, a trade, a profession.
And to live while learning...

Maybe that Mincome/Basic Annual Income isn't a ridiculous idea?

I note that I have just learned from CBC Radio's _Sunday Edition_ that Peter Navarro - he who's been pushing this trade war nonsense that DT-45 has been pursuing of late - is known among serious economists as "Peter Rabbit".

This is the source of that info:

Whatever I think of the NHL turning their backs on the CBC after six decades of a solid brand-building relationship, I just had my attention drawn to this item again tonight: the 2014 NHL Sustainability Report.

It's apparently occurred to some people looking at this report that the NHL might have both a financial and ecological stake in the outcome of Canada's next federal election. And that the oil and coal sector might have a problem with that perception.

I don't know that they're wrong about that assessment. Some of you reading this might have your own thoughts.

Anyone?

I hope I'm not breaking the rules by doing this, but I need to do some more outreach, particularly by making note of a "portfolio" of sorts hiding in my Flickr sets:

For map designs:

More general computer-assisted design work (with some duplication from the first two sets):

I'm linking to this to show some range of skills available, if anyone here needs any extra help with projects that aren't particularly time-sensitive between now and the end of May. It's my hope that after the end of May, I can include those time-sensitive projects as well.

Hoping this is useful to at least one of you reading this LJ...

Why is it that an outfit calling itself "Fair Pensions for All" has leadership that considers it a good idea to target the pensions of Crown corporation employees for reductions instead of improving the pensions of the private sector workers to similar levels?

Never-ending contracts: how precarious employment is making us sicker, poorer

Are you certain of where you’ll be working a year from now? If so, you’re one of the lucky ones—and not just when it comes to your wallet.

Only about 60 per cent of Canadians have that kind of job security, says an academic who studies short-term workers. He says the trend is growing. McMaster University labour studies professor Wayne Lewchuk says up to twice as many people are working precarious jobs compared to the 1980s, as an ever-increasing number of employers hire short-term contractors over permanent employees.

“The old role of temp agencies has been abandoned,” Lewchuk says. “Now temporary work is a permanent part of companies’ staffing plans... Today, half of our teaching (at McMaster) is permanently done by contract people. We have slots that are always filled by someone who is a temporary worker—these aren’t replacements.”

Well, the diasp0ra.ca issue seems to disappear when I use Safari rather than Firefox 11, and Firefox has been acting oddly over the last day or two. Maybe the next time I'm prompted to update to Firefox 12, I should do so?

Right.

So...Victoria Day. The third Monday of May is a federal statutory holiday to honour the memory of the monarch who signed off on promoting Canada from colony to Dominion back in 1867. Therefore, this is a long weekend. Considering the weather in Ottawa the city at the moment, perhaps we might all consider retiring to our basements, cellars, Diefenbunkers and other assorted underground hangouts to evade discomfortable levels of temperature without humidity.

Tomorrow I go back to the day-job, after three days' paid time off and a week's unpaid leave(that last subject to amendment, I hope). And I'm bracing for the next job hunt.

Interesting. I went digging for the Ottawa Citizen article in this morning's hardcopy edition on Unemployment Insurance only to find that the link to that article on the front page of the Citizen website was badly coded as of 7:40 AM and leads to a "Bad Request" page.

There's a reference in that article to comments in favour of the proposed changes to our UI system by spokespeople from a group called the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. Here's their Wikipedia page, FWIW.

The page alleges that its founder back in 1971 was one John Bulloch...whose own Wiki page claims him to be a current member of the Georgia State Senate, a claim apparently confirmed by that legislative body's own web service. No direct link And that's all that's present on that Wiki page, again as of 7:40 AM this morning. No direct confirmation that he ever lived in Canada on the Georgia State Senate page, mind you.

He claims Republican affiliation, representing Georgia's 11th District.

If it's indeed the same guy, I'd be interested to know more about the linkages.

I've just had my lack of research made clear to me elsewhere on the net. Definitely not the same guy.

Why?

On the Unemployment front: I think our federal finance minister's engaging in a little self-blinding here with this item as reported by CBC News:
