Apparently, this is the anniversary of what some in North American pro hockey might call the most blessed meeting in the history of the sport, and others, the most damned meeting in its history. At the Windsor Hotel in Montréal, four team owners decided to screw over a fifth in abandoning the National Hockey Association in favour of founding the NHL as we've come to know it today. According to the Globe and Mail.

So this was announced today:

Another bit of childhood history, gone to the ghost rinks. I have to admit to not paying much attention to him. I was a Philadelphia fan as a kid out in the prairies, and once the Sens were relaunched as a team, that was when I switched loyalties. But I remember the Entertainer, as he was sometimes called.

Remember this entry from 2016?

Can anyone tell me how that petition worked out re: Detroit's next NHL rink?

1. The seventh game of the playoff series between the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins starts tonight shortly after 8 PM EST.

2. Today is the 40th anniversary of the launch of Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope) at the movie theatres.

The phrase "Do, or do not. There is no 'try'" comes to mind, and I expect I'm not alone in that.

I understand the Red Wings are moving out of Joe Louis Arena, which is then scheduled for demolition. The successor name is currently set to be named Little Caesar's Arena, after the US-based pizza chain.

This does not sit at all well with me.

Come on, Detroit. You know what the right name for that rink ought to be.

Gordie Howe Memorial Arena.

Don't mess this up. Please.

Yes, I'm grovelling here.

Update: I'm reading about the petition already underway on this issue. Thank you kindly.

Whatever I think of the NHL turning their backs on the CBC after six decades of a solid brand-building relationship, I just had my attention drawn to this item again tonight: the 2014 NHL Sustainability Report.

It's apparently occurred to some people looking at this report that the NHL might have both a financial and ecological stake in the outcome of Canada's next federal election. And that the oil and coal sector might have a problem with that perception.

I don't know that they're wrong about that assessment. Some of you reading this might have your own thoughts.

Anyone?

Today, hockey fen in Canada - particularly in Winnipeg - got some long-awaited good news. A perceived injustice lasting fifteen years has now been put to rights, or so they hope and celebrate.

Today, hockey fen in the States - particularly in Atlanta - got some long-feared bad news. And in their case, it's not the first time such news got delivered to their doorstep.

Let's show a bit of respect for the people who had to pay for our dreams coming true with the loss of some of theirs. They've put a lot into building first the Flames and then the Thrashers, after all.

A drought that's lasted here in Ottawa for some 80 years is over.

The Sens are going to the finals!
