Baseball Sorrow 2025
Nov. 2nd, 2025 09:18 amWell, our team got as far as they could. This time.
Perfect South Park ending to this series, I suspect, would be for the Jays and Dodgers to jointly storm the White House and turn the Vulgarian and his various accomplices over to the Hague.
Your opinions will, I expect, differ from mine.
Commiserating with my fellow Jays fans this morning in any case...and now we get on with the CFL playoffs and the NBA, WNBA, NHL and PWHL regular seasons, right?

Assorted Notes - 26 May 2021
May. 26th, 2021 10:15 amI'm watching Ottawa City Council on YouTube as I start this entry. Here's the expected agenda.
Among other things going on...
Grand theft sea cucumber in Sri Lanka. This goes to the topics of organized crime and food security.
We have one particular anti-mask/anti-vaccine troublemaker getting more infamous by the hour. You'll forgive my not naming either of his names, I trust.
Wayne Gretzky is leaving the front office of the Edmonton Oilers for Turner Sports.
Media ownership concentration continues to worsen because Amazon buying MGM, Alden Capital Group acquiring Tribune Publishing, and other instances.
An item from the University of Waterloo on paid sick leave. Noting multiple private-sector employers and provincial and state governments now worried that workers will use such sick leave in a proper and responsible manner if they get it...including the Ford regime.
More stuff of interest later today...

RIP: Mira Furlan and Hank Aaron
Jan. 22nd, 2021 12:10 pmI only saw Mrs. Furlan in person once, at San Diego, just as Babylon 5 was getting going. And that, from across a standing-room only hall. Her work on-screen was nonetheless stellar, in the best sense, in the role of Delenn.
I never got to see Mr. Aaron, but I read the Peanuts strip with Snoopy standing in for Mr. Aaron, taking his own share of hate mail as a fictional beagle on his own quest to break Babe Ruth's record, and later learned the fuller story. Mr. Schulz was clearly a fan of Mr. Aaron, from what I saw in print.
Two people worthy of respect. Now both gone.

HOCKEY: NHL Founded in 1917
Nov. 26th, 2020 03:29 pmApparently, this is the anniversary of what some in North American pro hockey might call the most blessed meeting in the history of the sport, and others, the most damned meeting in its history. At the Windsor Hotel in Montréal, four team owners decided to screw over a fifth in abandoning the National Hockey Association in favour of founding the NHL as we've come to know it today. According to the Globe and Mail.
RIP Howie Meeker
Nov. 8th, 2020 03:56 pmAnd another piece of childhood TV goes away for me.

HEALTH/CANADA: The Hits Keep Coming
Mar. 12th, 2020 02:35 pmOkay.
The NHL has followed the NBA's course, in postponing their schedule.
https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/nhl-covid-19-suspended-season-1.5495002
The Juno Award Ceremonies are off.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/juno-awards-cancelled-1.5494929
The Trudeaus are self-isolating for the next couple of weeks. So our next First Ministers' Conference is off.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/covid19-premiers-coronavirus-1.5495001
Meanwhile, I'm watching videos about flow-charting software, just in case the job search doesn't get messed up. Or maybe to do what I can to get a work-from-home job. Not sure yet, but I've got to keep doing useful things.

Getting stuff done - 25 Nov 2018
Nov. 25th, 2018 01:10 pmOkay, I've downloaded an update for Gaia Sky to my "new"-ish MacBook (not-Pro), along with an expanded star catalogue (2 % downloaded so far as I type these words) because I'm still interested in playing the "mapping our Galaxy" game to whatever degree I can as a science-fiction nerd and non-astronomer. I read and watch too much space opera to be able to not give a damn or a blessing about this stuff at this point in life.
Getting some laundry done because it's Sunday, so why not?
Did some snack shopping too because it's Grey Cup weekend, and since Saskatchewan isn't playing, I get to cheer for Ottawa with as clean a conscience as I can given that chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a real problem for everyone who's going to be on the field. I hope everyone gets away with playing more safely than they used to today.

Three Things from Remembrance 2018
Nov. 12th, 2018 12:17 amFirst: I went to the ceremonies at the War Memorial today. Pix on my Flickr account: dwight_ew if you want to look it up.
You don't go to enjoy it, you don't go to be comfortable. The weather was blasphemously bright for the occasion, and if it weren't for my concern for the continuing health of our elder citizens (veterans and other alike)...
Anyway.
Second: I watched the Western Semi-Final CFL game today on TV. Seems near-blasphemous to have sports events on Remembrance at all, but there it was. Winnipeg vs. Saskatchewan. It did not go well for Saskatchewan. And some of the hits various players on both sides took make me feel even more hypocritical about wanting this sport and league to continue versus the concern for the players' health.
Third: I watched Doctor Who tonight. "Demons of the Punjab" addresses several issues dear to a lot of Whovian hearts, and a whole more non-Whovians' hearts as well. I'll leave it at that for the moment, except to note the setting: 1947, the Partition that sundered India/Bharat and Pakistan. The consequences of Empire for the lives of people on the street and/or the farm.
