...everything after this latest movie, apparently. BBC and Disney+ just announced their Big Deal for access to the series outside of the UK from now on. CTV Sci-Fi is history to them now, just as the CBC was forced by Conservative Party pressure to walk away from their relationship for Canadian broadcast rights years earlier.

I smell ideological pressure on the BBC from somewhere, of course.

Jodie Whittaker's farewell?

I think I did. I'm afraid that I did.

Well, I wasn't expecting this.

Maybe I should have?

A day and a half late with this entry. But it's here now. It doesn't feel all that different so far, of course.

Stuff I've been doing:
  • Watching "Revolution of the Daleks" on Doctor Who.
  • Reading The Art of Star Trek: Discovery.
  • Buying fonts in Comicraft's annual New Year's Font Sale. This year: revised edition of Wiccan, along with Doohickey Lower and Ultimatum.
  • Checking in with Canadian Conrunners Central on Discord.
  • Grocery errands for the household.
  • Sketchbook practice on actual paper.
  • Assorted house chores.
More as it develops...

For my fellow Whovians. Spoilers possible?

How about "Go Places" by the New Pornographers?

Can I find a video with the original performers? I believe so.

Once you pay attention to the lyrics, can you see why the tune might be a good fit as part of this incarnation?

Imperfect as it always was, the people who've worked across the decades on this series have a tradition of trying to better their work...and after all, there was that educational mandate, right?

Well, that episode kicked over a few tables and turned them to kindling, right?

There's no way the Putinists are going to tolerate licensed translations of Doctor Who airing in Russia after tonight, is there?

Got chores done, bought snacks I shouldn't have, did some font shopping that I'm going to refuse to regret despite my finances, and enjoyed Doctor Who season-closing movie.

Spoilers about that last one in the comments if anyone cares to discuss...

First: I went to the ceremonies at the War Memorial today. Pix on my Flickr account: dwight_ew if you want to look it up.

You don't go to enjoy it, you don't go to be comfortable. The weather was blasphemously bright for the occasion, and if it weren't for my concern for the continuing health of our elder citizens (veterans and other alike)...

Anyway.

Second: I watched the Western Semi-Final CFL game today on TV. Seems near-blasphemous to have sports events on Remembrance at all, but there it was. Winnipeg vs. Saskatchewan. It did not go well for Saskatchewan. And some of the hits various players on both sides took make me feel even more hypocritical about wanting this sport and league to continue versus the concern for the players' health.

Third: I watched Doctor Who tonight. "Demons of the Punjab" addresses several issues dear to a lot of Whovian hearts, and a whole more non-Whovians' hearts as well. I'll leave it at that for the moment, except to note the setting: 1947, the Partition that sundered India/Bharat and Pakistan. The consequences of Empire for the lives of people on the street and/or the farm.

Well, that episode punched all the fear buttons tonight, didn't it?

And that was without even bringing the spiders into the plot.

Also: Chris Noth as a recurring villain? That could be interesting for a year or two.

People I'd like to hear covering "Maybe Tomorrow" AKA "the Littlest Hobo theme": Sarah MacLachlan, BNL, and for some weird constellation of reasons...Jodie Whittaker.

At the risk of spoilers: I recognize the last two people in that list. As for the rest, I look forward to being brought up to speed about them.

And I want an avatar for supporting Thirteen.

Typical with the Doctor's new incarnations this past decade, isn't it? Barely see them on the screen for almost literally a minute and already they're dumped into a cliff-hanger. :-)

Ottawa Comiccon is this weekend, and among the actors named as guests at that event are the following:
  • Peter Capaldi
  • Jenna Coleman
  • Alex Kingston
  • John Barrowman
We have enough "names" present in Ottawa-Gatineau as of this morning that we could have filmed an episode of Doctor Who entirely on location hereabouts. A script worth performing and a production team were unavailable, however.

Missed opportunity.

Much like the CBC letting the series escape to Space Channel...

One: tonight's Doctor Who is an argument for labour unions if ever I've watched it.

Two: pleased by the Sens' game one results.
dewline: Doctor Who quote: Books. Best Weapons in the World (Books)
Well, I had fun for the 90 minutes it was on. It helped me stay sane (enough).

Interesting to see such a flourish of the cape to Marvel and DC's publications...and the early days of Byrne's Superman in particular, right there on the air for all to see. Was that a specific choice of Moffat's?

At 9 PM EST, I plan to shut down my internet for the night and watch Doctor Who. That is going to be my final bit of self-care for the evening. Tomorrow, I start up again.
