Ottawa Comiccon is this weekend, and among the actors named as guests at that event are the following:
  • Peter Capaldi
  • Jenna Coleman
  • Alex Kingston
  • John Barrowman
We have enough "names" present in Ottawa-Gatineau as of this morning that we could have filmed an episode of Doctor Who entirely on location hereabouts. A script worth performing and a production team were unavailable, however.

Missed opportunity.

Much like the CBC letting the series escape to Space Channel...

One: tonight's Doctor Who is an argument for labour unions if ever I've watched it.

Two: pleased by the Sens' game one results.

Well, I had fun for the 90 minutes it was on. It helped me stay sane (enough).

Interesting to see such a flourish of the cape to Marvel and DC's publications...and the early days of Byrne's Superman in particular, right there on the air for all to see. Was that a specific choice of Moffat's?

At 9 PM EST, I plan to shut down my internet for the night and watch Doctor Who. That is going to be my final bit of self-care for the evening. Tomorrow, I start up again.

Spoilers highly probable here, so...Some stuff about mapping post-climate derangement in a Doctor Who story... )

Anyway, there's my nerdiness for the afternoon. Back to job searching. Unless you think this qualifies me for a job with your TV or movie project? (Doubtful, but miracles happen in other areas of life.)

Saw "The Magician's Apprentice" earlier this afternoon. A ride mixing fun and horror in equal measure, to my satisfaction. We can quibble over specific details if you want, but beware: some on my friendlist in that fandom may not have seen the show yet.

As to the ear-nose-throat issues, those continue at speed. I've burned through two boxes of facial tissue to date, a half-dozen Ricola lozenges, and I don't expect to be done yet by tomorrow morning. There will be lack of sleep, as per usual, when I log off for the night.

More as it occurs to me.

(Wondering if I want an avatar for "Twelve"...)

There's this band, the New Pornographers. You might have heard of them. They put out an album in 2007, Challengers. The title song, as you'll figure out from the lyrics, is a nod to the DC characters of the same ilk. No idea which incarnation(s) of the team are favoured by which musicians in the band, mind you.

I'm starting to tie two other songs on that album in my mind to specific series or characters: "Deus Ex Machina" to Doctor Who, "Adventures in Solitude" to Captain America. Something in the lyrics of each song fits each series.

I doubt that mental association was intended by the band at the time, but it works for me.

And you?

I saw this image in the Toronto Star a few days ago, and thought the photographer lucked out on the timing of the shutter during that speech in Richmond Hill, Ontario. See for yourself. Source is credited in the resultant image.

As I say to Mr. Hines directly in the original post's comments: I would object to specifying Snoopy as an incarnation of the Doctor. Otherwise, the theory as presented is entertainingly sound.

For your amusement, then...

I decided to go with a lighter blog post for today. Feel free to debate and discuss.

Proposal: Snoopy is actually a Time Lord. Probably the Doctor.

  1. Snoopy was first sighted on Earth in October of 1950, and was around for far longer than any known beagle. Also, his appearance changed over time. (But he’s always been a white male!)

    Snoopy 1950Snoopy Modern

  2. His dog house is canonically bigger on the inside.

    Snoopy Doghouse

  3. And it flies. (Though it doesn’t always take him where he intended to go.)

    Snoopy - Lost

  4. He is known to have traveled in space.

    Snoopy - Moon

  5. He has a companion, one he understands and communicates with despite their different languages. (TARDIS translation circuit?)

    Snoopy + Woodstock

  6. He owned a Van Gogh. (The link between Van Gogh and the Doctor has been well-established.)

    Snoopy Van Gogh

  7. He’s been known to wear bow ties.

    Snoopy - Bow Tie

Conclusion: Time Lord!

Thinking that this has been a very good weekend. First, "Day of the Doctor" last night. Now the results of tonight's Grey Cup game in Regina.

A very good weekend.

Yeah. I saw the news from BBC. Gonna miss Mr. Smith.

Idris Elba vs. Helen Mirren.

Yeah. That worked. People around the planet will hate Moffat for this, but it still worked.

In my time zone, I've just under 3.5 hours left before I see "The Angels Take Manhattan".

Anyone on my friendlist who posts spoilers with no shielding behind an LJ-cut is off the friendlist for at least the next six months.

[ profile] fajrdrako is gonna love this (and likely won't be alone among the crowd reading this): Barrowman's announced as being scheduled to be in Toronto for FanExpo Canada.

Some of you will already know of this from other sources, but... Apparently, this is for real. IDW, BBC and Paramount all got their lawyers on the same page here.

Amy...this isn't a soundstage!

Visited the CBC open house today.
Picked up the latest Star Trek: Vanguard instalment.
Attended the new meeting this afternoon.
Watched "The Wedding of River Song" tonight.

All in all, a good day.

Mind you, I wish that dial-up speed would return to what it was in my younger days on the Net...

Scroll down. Whilst you're learning about Canadian parliamentary procedure, you'll also learn a bit about Ms. O'Malley's tastes in science fiction on TV!

Some quick notes...

Went to Charles de Lint's book sale today. A bit of a joke: my first visit to one of his sales ended up being to the last such book sale he's doing. It's been something I've been wanting to visit for years, but for one reason-excuse or another, I kept managing to miss the event. The timing of that is a little annoying. Likewise the fact that a number of friends of mine also went to the sale today, and I didn't get to say "hi" to a single one of them. The timing is absolutely rotten on that score. Couldn't be helped, seeing as I needed to help someone with rehanging curtains this morning. (Not kidding.)

*shrugs and moves onward*

Found, bought and took home copies of Quantum and Woody: The Director's Cut and Virtual Light. The first of those is a collection of the first four issues of a buddy-movie/superhero comic written by Christopher Priest and illustrated by Mark "Doc" Bright. Sobering and funny, by turns, and sometimes all at once. Life is messy, it is often absurd, and this book took that fact and ran like crazy with it. I miss those characters.

William Gibson, most of you reading this weblog regularly already know. I need to get better acquainted with his writing, so that's why that book is now in my library for however long it stays.

One thing for sure: I will have to start holding my own annual yard sales sooner or later. There is no avoiding that for me. No chance at all.

Doctor Who tonight...while I'm still not sure who's behind the nominal threat forces appearing in tonight's instalment...we did get some serious answers about longstanding questions. And River really brought some home truths into clear view for the Doctor, didn't she?

Was this really episode # 777?

More in a bit on a certain comics reboot...

...without getting into spoiler details here, I get the sense that the Doctor's seen this sort of issue crop up before. And it ended very badly that time.

Would I be wrong?
