On the Edge of 2023 (Gregorian Calendar)
Dec. 31st, 2022 10:09 pmI still don't have any ideas as to resolutions for 2023. Not sure that I should, really. Just having them, never mind naming them, seems like tempting fate or God or gods to reach out to break me for that act alone.
Good luck to you all. May we be kind. May we be just. Whether we're sane or not. Whether we prosper or not, although I hope we do that as well. There will be no guarantees of any of this. Still, as some of you have noted, healing the world to whatever degree possible is an obligation upon us all.
2021: First Entry
Jan. 2nd, 2021 03:53 pmStuff I've been doing:
- Watching "Revolution of the Daleks" on Doctor Who.
- Reading The Art of Star Trek: Discovery.
- Buying fonts in Comicraft's annual New Year's Font Sale. This year: revised edition of Wiccan, along with Doohickey Lower and Ultimatum.
- Checking in with Canadian Conrunners Central on Discord.
- Grocery errands for the household.
- Sketchbook practice on actual paper.
- Assorted house chores.
Gratitude at the End of 2020
Dec. 31st, 2020 10:45 pmYou've been some of that help that's kept me going in spite of everything this year. I am grateful to you all for that.
Transition: 2019 to 2020
Dec. 31st, 2019 06:58 pmI've been looking for work, shopping, sketching, fussing about my own health, fiddling with ideas for fonts to buy from Comicraft's Annual New Year's Day Font Sale - it's on again now while it's still New Year's Day anywhere on Earth - and trying to stay in touch with other friends as well over the course of today. Depending on who you believe, today is either the last day of the decade...or we're still a year and a day away from that point. It's arguable, and that's alright.
The idea of New Year's resolutions seems wrong, so I won't do that. There's goals, desires that I have, yes. But it seems like asking for unearned and unwanted trouble to announce those in a ritual like that. So...no formal plans. If the opportunity comes up, I take the chance and see what happens.
I hope this new (Gregorian-calendar) year is kind to you all. I hope that you can be kind to this coming year in turn.
Good luck.
More on other stuff later, as it comes to mind...
New Year's Eve 2018 is Here...
Dec. 31st, 2018 10:55 pmIn case you're wondering: I'm not making any resolutions for 2019 Gregorian. I doubt my ability to keep to any of them right now.
And so 2018 begins...
Jan. 1st, 2018 09:03 amGood luck to us all, and may the autocrats and totalitarians and fascists find themselves stuck in corners of failure and obscurity without dragging the rest of us with them. That's my first wish for this new Gregorian year.
There will be other wishes, of course.
2017: Eight Hours In...
Jan. 1st, 2017 08:06 am..and I'm still alive. I'm still in Ottawa-Gatineau, which still exists in a still-independent Canada. For now.
I can make no guarantees about the future of myself, my cities and my country, of course. Not at the moment. But if there's a way for me to contribute to the survival of all three, I hope to be able to act on knowing it. If that reads as needlessly apocalyptic, I apologize in hope to everyone reading these words past at least 2018.
I note with some continuing interest in labour issues an interview with Unifor President Jerry Dias in yesterday's Toronto Star. Interest, and some hope, as I think we're not done with the issues Dias refers to just yet, in Canada or elsewhere. There are improvements that can be made to increase the satisfaction of workers and shareholders alike.
Also from the same newspaper, an article on the state of books and bookstores, in Canada and elsewhere that leaves me with some hope for the future of that business. I would be somewhat content to find myself as a staff person in a bookstore in the near future. I doubt that I'd like everything the work involves, but that's a peril of any line work. I could still console myself easily with being a productive person by helping others learn and be entertained. And if anyone wants to make the attempt in Ottawa east of the Greenbelt, let me know? The bus connections within this part of the city aren't perfect, but the price of bus passes is getting better for me.
Today's plans involve laundry, listening to The Sunday Edition and Cross-Country Checkup on CBC Radio One, and maybe some other chores as well. More as it develops, I'm sure.
