...because I expect to be avoiding sleep if I can tonight. Not to mention the next few weeks.

(Note: I expect this article to be moved behind a paywall eventually, so I'll need an alternative covering the same ground that doesn't sit behind such a thing.)

Date: 2012-05-19 07:48 pm (UTC)What stinks is that there are always some bad apples in the EI barrel, that get held up as the example of ALL those on EI. I had an uncle who worked construction in the summer, and then took the rest of the year off, much to my father's ire. He never made an attempt at looking for work in the interim, and to me is that example that they hold up as the norm. He's not.
I'm all for taking a closer look at applicants, to weed out scams like the one above, but this is extreme. Then, this is the same party that would rather have a doctor from another country work as a taxi driver, or clerk at a convenience store than figure out a way to close the gap in licensing and broaden the tax base, and have them be in a more satisfying job, which would be a win for all involved.

Date: 2012-05-19 07:55 pm (UTC)For myself, whenever I find myself on UI - I still use the original name - I've been (1) looking for regular day-job work, (2) trying to build my own job in comics or fiction-writing, and (3) doing whatever volunteer stuff I can such as with WritersFest and CAN-CON 2012 with an eye towards goals (1) and (2) as much as for the events' own importance.
It doesn't seem to help much, but I can't afford to give up, right?
