I've been reminded over on TrekBBS that there's ongoing medical fundraisers for two writers whose work on comic books and on Star Trek I've enjoyed reading and re-reading over the decades.

There is a conclusion I've come to:

Hands Off = Elbows Up = Slava Ukraini

It's all the same fight.

I've known this guy for a couple of decades now. Providing a virtual bullhorn seems to be as much help as I can personally give at the moment. So...

Shelley "TSivia" Rabinovitch is a friendly acquaintance of longstanding from as far back as the early years of Can-Con's relaunch as a convention for writers, illustrators and editors of speculative fiction and their fans. We were both on the organizing committee together for a couple of years.

TSivia is currently in need of some support herself at the moment. Details are in the link. Some of you will have already heard of this through other channels and already acted upon that, I suspect. If you haven't, please have a look:

Taking a break from Pirate Day stuff because one of my friendlisters needs help covering their eye care.

Douglas [personal profile] gridlore Berry has some post-cataract surgery complications that surprised his finances, and so there's a GoFundMe now active to cover those extra costs. Details here. If you can donate, please do. If not, please spread the word as best you can!

Seeing that several friends and acquaintances in the affected regions have already pre-emptively let the world - and myself by implication - know that they are safe enough if not entirely well?

It seems a good idea to ask after anyone who hasn't yet directly spoken to the occasion. If there's a thing this unemployed writer/artist/office worker might find a way to help you with at this point post-Hurricane Ida, or if you just want to get word to me that you're safe enough for the moment, say something here, please?

So, years and years back, when I had more confidence in my art skills, I did a spot illustration for a friend's serialized novel about super-heroics gone awry. The friend was - and remains - Lee "Budgie" Barnett. He prefers "Budgie" for reasons you can consult his blog or the pinned thread on his Twitter account about.

The novel was originally serialized a couple of ownership groups ago on Comic Book Resources, and while it's no longer on that website, you can still get either ePub or Kindle editions for your entertainment.

Details here.

More on other topics as the day goes onward.

I have the "spoons" for helping other people with their problems today. But I don't have the imaginative leaps or practical advice or concrete deeds to share as well yet.

I'm just going to have to wait for the second half to catch up with the first is all.

More on that and other topics later.

If you're American, go have a look, if you haven't already done so. There might be something constructive for you to act on.

1. So there's this café on Somerset West that I've visited once and would like to revisit at some point after things re-settle enough and I have a steady day-job again. Apt613 published a profile on their reopening process that got my attention.

2. Some opinions held by neighbours across the city to consider re: how to finance...police or public safety or whatever we end up calling the service from now on. And to what ends.

3. Photography as Food Bank fundraiser during the Time of Pandemic.

4. The Four-Day Work Week may be a reality for more people from now on. Taylor Blewett at Postmedia Ottawa (AKA the Ottawa Citizen) reports on one company's leaning into that direction. I suspect it's not going to be a thing every employer can or should do, but it might be helpful in some ways.

5. Yes, I'm still job-hunting. And doing laundry. More later.

Anyone know someone in analytical chemistry looking for a federal gig?

And some of Excel's competitors are looking for a psychologist too.

Thanks to [personal profile] jhetley for this lead:

Apparently, the company makes medical swabs for use in COVID-19 testing and they really need to ramp up production. They're based in Maine, USA, if that matters right now to whomever you might pass this lead on to.

Meanwhile, back to my own job search closer to home for me...and I'll probably post about other topics as today moves along.

One of my subscribed job-search alerts via the job search service Indeed pointed this out to me: Lee Valley Tools, a local hardware retailer that's been active for four decades here in Ottawa-Gatineau, has need of an archivist-curator at this particular moment.

If their management will forgive my quoting the advertisement, with italic emphasis of my choosing:

"Overview:

We have a new opportunity available for an Archivist/Curator Technician (Co-Op) at our Head Office in Ottawa, ON.

The Archivist/Curator Technician will provide support in the record keeping, cataloguing and maintaining of Lee Valley’s collection of historical artifacts and organizational documents.
Key Responsibilities

Preserve and maintain LV customer catalogues
Maintain digital files and databases
Organize and classify records to make them easy to search through
Coordinate, store and maintain tool collection
Photograph and Log all Information about items ( Measurements, origins, markings)
Conduct special research projects
Supporting store or trade show exhibits

Knowledge and Skills:

Minimum current enrollment in diploma or degree program related to museum studies or history
Well organized, able to work independently
Strong attention to detail
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Suite software"

This sounds like a cool job when I read out that part aloud. I'm not qualified to do the work, but some of you out there might know someone who'd be interested and able to do the work.

In the course of my own search, I found that - as of this writing - the Ottawa office of Maxsys is looking for candidates to fill slots as dental technicians, and also a biologist and a chemist.

Anyone in my friendlist here know any architects who want to specialize in designing laboratories? I found an ad via one of the local temp placement companies this afternoon?

I don't know that I'm qualified for any of these, but in case someone's interested in what's on offer from this particular branch of the Canadian federal government right now:

Apparently, there's this company in the west end - the southern end of Kanata, by the looks of it - that's looking for animators, user interface designers, and so on, called Kindly Beast. The people who used to run Karman Interactive joined up with them, and they've got two or three projects they're looking to move to front burners on their business "stove". Details here if you're interested.
