Something that came up in discussion with Mark Shainblum over at Facebook:

To get to a scenario like Star Trek (where such travel has been normalized for a couple of centuries), never mind Star Wars (normalized for 50 thousand years at minimum), we're going to have to go through a phase like we see on The Expanse. We'd best get used to that idea.

And that's if we figure out something in the laws of physics that makes warp drives, hyperlight jump tech or whatever technologically possible. There's people doing that research in several places across our planet right now, yes, but their progress - if any - is going to be slow. Until the prototypes get proven out. If they get proven.

Most of you regulars reading this already know these things. What I needed to do here was remind myself of these facts.

Bought it yesterday and read it through in about three hours. Despite the page and word count being what they are.

The writers really did their job, I'd say.

I'm sorry I won't be able to watch Season 4 and onward on Space - oh, right, it's going to be "CTV Sci-Fi" from now on, right? - because the show needed Jeff Bezos to rescue it from cancellation...but it is what it is, right?

Since I have at least two friendlisters here at Dreamwidth who have a continuing interest in both novels and TV series of that ilk, and the production company's looking for a new American backer for the TV show now that SyFy's pulled out...well, it seems a good excuse to open up my own mic to chat about it.

I'm annoyed to have first missed and then been blocked from internet-viewing "Immolation" from last week myself, especially since they're in the process of transitioning from adapting Caliban's War to Abaddon's Gate. I'm not going to ask for help in circumventing the legal routes, because I can wait for the Season 3 DVD set.

Anyway, that's most of what I wanted to say for the moment...

That's when I expect to see Infinity War.

Just a reminder.

Been re-reading Caliban's War over the weekend since watching "Assured Destruction" on The Expanse. Different stories for different media, right?

1. The Expanse started its third season tonight, so I put it on the PVR for later review. Looking forward to watching that.

2. Need sleep. Still not getting it.

3. Yes, I heard about Anson Mount and Tig Notaro re: ST: Discovery. Interesting developments, both. Implication about Notaro's character's role and home starship: if they name one for Hiawatha, is there one for Deganawideh? Given the reverence/respect shown the latter among the Haudenosonee in his role as their Great Peacemaker, what would be the proper starship-naming protocol here?

It occurs to me that, despite the relative proximity of Beta Pic to Sol at 64 lightyears (barring updates from GAIA DR 2 or later), we're still not ever going to see any planets finish forming in our lifetimes. Nor that of our entire biosphere, probably.

The same goes for the protagonists of Star Trek, Babylon 5, The Expanse, Honor Harrington, the Legion of Super-Heroes, the 31st Century incarnations of the Guardians of the Galaxy, etc..

Here's what set off my thought:

Just finished Persepolis Rising from the Expanse series. Starting on Andy Weir's Artemis and Masha Gessen's Man Without a Face biography of Putin. After that, hopefully Linden McIntyre's The Only Cafe, since that was one of the gifts I got this Christmas.

Possibly spoilers, but I'm not sure yet. Just started listening/watching it myself.
