As for Mr. Dickson's warning:
“Trouble rather the tiger in his lair than the sage among his books. For to you kingdoms and their armies are things mighty and enduring, but to him they are but toys of the moment, to be overturned with the flick of a finger.”

Timothy Snyder: Decapitation Strike
Dec. 3rd, 2024 07:25 amSo Prof. Snyder wrote a thing a few days ago...

So I'm looking at Justin Trudeau's trip to visit the Vulgarian this past weekend in that light. Yes, I've read of the reports that the Vulgarian "suggested" that Trudeau become a governor of one of several newly-annexed states. I don't think that Trudeau's interested. Neither am I.
If it were AOC or Jamie Raskin making the "suggestion", I'd consider it more seriously and less nervously. Depending on the terms, it might actually be tempting.

Warning to the United States
Mar. 3rd, 2022 07:04 amRepurposed from comments I made in the Maple Leaf Lounge thread at TrekBBS:
If Trump gets back in the White House - or if worse than Trump takes his place there - I fear that we are going to see him try to order an invasion of Canada to install someone like Pat King, Tamara Lich, Christopher Garrah, Nicholas St. Louis, Benjamin Dichter, Steeve Charland, etc. as his preferred prime minister.
Take him at his word on this, and take this as the warning that it is. Please.
I believe that Trump is exactly that stupid and that cruel. He's announced what he wants to happen to us. And his supporters on both sides of the border have already been rallying,

Also, we have problems getting to our 2 % of GDP goal re: defence spending.

In case anyone's wondering: I am NOT interested in NFTs. Why should I enable eco-hostile, money-laundering crap?
And then there's this angle from SPLC's Michael Edison Hayden:

If you live in Ontario...
Aug. 24th, 2021 07:46 pmBeware Ontario Green Savings. That's my opinion.
Their latest thing? Once they've (violated Ontario Bill 59 by way of having) cold-called you into letting them into the house is to talk up deals about HEPA filters.
https://www.bbb.org/ca/on/toronto/profile/furnace-sales/ontario-green-savings-0107-1371486
And yes, this is one more reason why I'm never taking a call centre job. I know people who've taken such work and never done a single bit of scamming in their lives as such workers. Some of them are on my friendlist here and I'm glad to know them.
Not taking any chances, though.

Weather/Climate Radio Infrastructure
Dec. 30th, 2020 02:27 pmTaking a brief moment from my video tutorial studies of Drupal 8 - which I think I may need to rewatch several times each today - to pass this along: apparently Canadian federal penny-pinching is getting too line-item-fussy about weather alert-related infrastructure again? Details here:
https://saskboy.wordpress.com/2020/12/30/weather-alert-dismantling/
If Jon Klein's misunderstood the situation, please pass along corrective information. I'm certain that he'll appreciate the corrections once he confirms their accuracy.
If he's got it right, and you're a Canadian citizen, please contact your federal MP ASAP.

Nine examples of "leaders" we don't need, as explained by The Guardian's Simon Tisdall.
As to the icon I'm using for this blog entry? Well, once you look at the rogues' gallery that Tisdall has composed, several of whom you already know too well, you'll understand my choice.

Musings on a Future I Do NOT Want
Dec. 21st, 2016 02:06 pmSome musings from Vicki Mochama for Ottawa Metro on the state of racism amongst and within Canadians' hearts.
I have benefitted from white privilege. I know that. I acknowledge that. I want a more just world because I too will benefit from the consequences of its being brought about. One more of the things I fear is that I will succumb to the temptation to fear for that privilege.
Leaving this public, knowing the range of consequences...
PS: Adding a link to Saada Branker's opinion essay at CBC on the situation. Because it's also too relevant to ignore. Fatigue (and anxiety) responses to stories about intolerance should never be equated by bigots with having license to pull this crap. Anywhere. Ever.

Warning re: "Hulu Plus" for GMail Users
Jan. 11th, 2015 08:27 pmFor those of you on my friendlist here who have GMail accounts: if any of you have gotten an e-mail - could've been today, could've been earlier in the week - from an outfit calling itself "Hulu Plus" claiming that you have subscribed to their TV-over-the-web service?
Scam. Scam. SCAM.
The clue for me was their getting the last four digits on my credit card wrong. And I sure as Hell didn't remember signing up with any such service in the first place.
So, heads up.
Actually, some of you may have gotten that spam-scam e-mail no matter what e-mail provider(s) you're using. Or may be about to receive it.
Again, heads up.

Watching Out for Scammers
Sep. 8th, 2013 10:32 amOkay, this is something to be wary of up here in the True North:

Not just Ottawa, but elsewhere in Canada too. Keep your eyes and ears open.
