dewline: Art Against Bigotry and Fascism (artists vs fascism)
I'll get to the point: I am not sure if you're aware that Chanel Pfahl has earned the attention of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network by her conduct before declaring her candidacy for the Zone 8 seat on the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.

I emphasize my choice of verb here: "earned". I say that based on their profile of her activities and conduct:

https://www.antihate.ca/anti_transgender_candidates_enter_school_board_elections_ottawa

She is a person dedicated - so far as I can see - to restoring the protection of law to specific forms of bigotry, against transgender people for openers. We dare not expect her to stop there given the information provided by antihate.ca in the link included above - for example, we see references to "critical race theory", a pet target of Trumpists in the United States - and that's horrific enough. With that in mind, I'm alarmed to see her self-advertisement on page 2 of this half-month's edition of The Orléans Star. Such promotion of hatred is clear evidence that she is unfit to serve on any school board.

I will vote against all organized bigotry, including organized transphobia. I therefore look forward to information on Pfahl's competitors for the Zone 8 seat with great interest.
dewline: Snoopy screaming in frustration (Augh)
Two anger-inducing things I encountered this morning while out for my walk:

1) the school board candidate profiled by AntiHate.ca as a Problematic person has her first campaign signs up, one of them at a prominent intersection near me.

2) At that intersection, I passed a person who greeted me with that now-infamous "white power" hand gesture along with more innocuous words.

Right here in Orléans, east of downtown Ottawa.

I know of the Convoy Crowd encampments at St. Brigid's in Lowertown and the Bikers' Church in Vanier. Where are they gathering here, unwatched, in Orléans? How do we make them understand that they've worn out their welcome?

[personal profile] siderea makes some notes about the monkeypox situation. Once again, we are likely to be Not Paranoid Enough about the things that we should be, because the organized bigots are going to start leveraging this too to restore their power over their chosen prey-groups if they haven't already. And that will likely undermine the public health measure we should already be undertaking.

(Should I use "Augh!" or "Virus Don't Care" for this one?)
dewline: "Truth is still real" (anti-fascism)
This is a bit of a muddle. I apologise for that right now.

In downtown Ottawa, we're trying to deal with two messes at once. It's not the first time for our city, not since the original Euro-settlement on top of Algonquin lands in the 1820's.

The extreme cold warning is nothing new. Nor are protests in general. Not for Ottawa the city or Ottawa AKA "shorthand for the federal government". This particular protest feels like part of the ongoing war against multi-ethnic, democratic civil society in some respects.

Sidebar: Justin Ling interviewed by Matt Galloway about some of the roots of the "Freedom Convoy" over here:

https://www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent/the-current-for-jan-28-2022-1.6331041

And, Ling also details those issues more directly here:

I worry for friends whose homes and jobs are in downtown Ottawa. And, for the wider world. But that's not new either.

Organized racism is still afoot, as many of you already know far better by more direct and horrific ways than I. So are people who define civilisation as being exemplified by the ability to force others to live as you demand, whether motivated by bigotry or something else.

There's more ground to cover, I'm sure...

I see symptoms of no small concern across my own country...

Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh connecting the dots between anti-maskers and the far right. Correctly, based on far too many data points.

A pro-racism candidate for mayor of Calgary about to get access to the full list of registered-eligible voters for that city now that Naheed Nenshi has announced that he will not be running for another term. He's already issued threats against employees of Alberta Health Services (AHS) across that province, demanding and insisting to be able to legally "dox" them.

I think we've had alarms raised by the Indigenous nations about this here on the settler-nations of Turtle Island, right? Michael Geist at the University of Ottawa notes some ongoing trouble between South Africa and the USA along similar lines.

Night of contrasts: as white supremacists are trying to frame honest protestors across the USA for looting and vandalism, we also had the Crew Dragon launch today and the 2020 Nebula Awards are being handed out via streaming video. Surreal. Hope, fear and anger all at once in my heart and mind right now.

That what happened yesterday in Minneapolis to Mr. Floyd - suspected of crimes or not - was murder by torture. I call it what it was.

The firing of the involved officers was a good first step in the response process. I await further steps with a mixture of hope and fear, for reasons already clear to many. There is a history of atrocities and impunity that ties into this.

I have a problem with these individuals:

Brian Jean, aiding and abetting Wexiteer nonsense.

Québec education minister Jean-Francois Roberge and the CAQ government of that province as well, aiding and abetting separatism and bigotry.

On one level, this was an act of intimidation. On another, an act of twisted nostalgia.

On another, it was worse.

I answer the act with this: Ottawa - since well before European contact and "settlement" - colonization, really - was always functionally multilingual. Not merely bilingual.

And it should always remain so.

Specifically Avengers: the Childrens' Crusade. There's the mayor of Rio, who's tied to an evangelical outfit based out of Brazil, a friend to the would-be tyrant Jair Bolsonaro...and he decided to pick a fight with a book fair - specifically the 19th International Book Biennial of Rio de Janeiro - over the trade collection of that mini-series, translated into Portuguese. And by going after an Avengers book, Marcelo Crivella has therefore targeted Marvel and Disney.

The biggest newspaper in Brazil decided to throw it right back in the bigots' faces.

Further info in these links. The first of which is from CBC News circa 2016, filed by Matt Kwong. It's included for some historical context.

Noting that today, whilst walking around my neighbourhood on a shopping errands and doing yard work, I've spotted bees, a cricket(!) and...possibly a millipede. Are they the ones with "fur" coats?

On the matter of exoplanets around nearby stars:

https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/a-second-planet-for-beta-pictoris

(Did I remove "Beta Pictoris" from my list of tags? No, I didn't!)

Current "confirmed" count as of 20 August 2019 at exoplanet.eu, FYI: 4107. Ninety more worlds confirmed in the space of about three months.

And a physicist may have useful data on how to mess with hatemongers online:

Inspired by "Battle at the Binary Stars".

Danby Connor's last words before being vented out of the USS Shenzhou by Klingon fire: "Why are we fighting? We're Starfleet. We're explorers, not soldiers."

The last newsflash of Danby Connor's life: you don't always get to be believed regardless of how much truth you tell and live.

Bigotry doesn't care.

I'd argue that Andrew Scheer didn't fail to draw the distinction.

He refused to draw the distinction. It's an obedience test for his crowd now, and he chose to pass.

This convoy coming to Ottawa this week is one of them.

They not only want to make things worse for my lungs - whether they believe it or not doesn't matter to me and my doctor - some of them are looking for excuses to target their preferred minority scapegoat too. With people like Kennedy, Ford, and Dugin singing praises of their like, that makes me more than a little antsy for the safety of a lot of us in Canada.
