COMICS: SWORD # 1-3
Mar. 29th, 2021 06:51 pm"The mutant space program", they call it now.
A station that used to house six thousand people of assorted species, now repurposed to run with 300 or so Earthly mutants of the newborne Krakoan nation using it as a platform for exploration, research, diplomacy, defence.
A mixture of dreamers, pragmatists, working stiffs, grifters...and fanatics.
The first three issues read well together. Even with the intervention of the "King in Black" crossover, which I write off as the latest consequence of the original Secret Wars mini-series from the early 1980's. From there to Venom/Eddie Brock...eventually to this.
I'm having fun reading.

Yeah.
So this happened, apparently to one of the characters connecting those two Marvel teams.
Or at least, their existence was a connection between the two branches of the Marvel Universe until now.
Looks like this particular creative choice backfired, perhaps not unlike "One More Day/Brand New Day" backfired on the Spider-Man comics titles. We'll see what happens in the months and years ahead, I suppose.

Okay, two Wednesdays ago, the first issue of House of X hit the comic book shops and the online subscription services. And Jonathan Hickman introduced this new/old thing called "Orchis". It seems to be the latest in a chain of things from the Weapon Plus program to Project Wideawake, hostile responses to the existence of superhuman mutants with heavy USGov involvement.

The consequences of these characters, and for these characters still haven't yet been thought through completely, have they? Or we wouldn't see essays like this one.
Here's where I found the link. Thanks much to
ysabetwordsmith for the pointer.

Dave Cockrum
Nov. 26th, 2006 05:55 pmConfession: I never met the man. Or at least, given the state of my memory right now, I don't recall the meeting if it ever did happen.
I know what he gave to me as an X-Men and Legion fan, though, if nothing else. And I know of others who got some of that same joy and wonder from his handiwork, probably more than I did in several cases. Some of them have already posted on their own blogs or Usenet or elsewhere. And if they haven't, then it's only a matter of time.
So all I have as a stranger and a reader is this to say:
Ave atque vale, Mr. Cockrum.
Thank you.

Back from Seeing X3...
Jun. 3rd, 2006 09:34 pm...and as designed, it was a thrill ride. Good for a couple of hours of not quite mindless fun. Assorted friends and acquaintances of mine have been poking holes in it -- or, perhaps "finding holes that were already in the plot" would be their choice of phrase -- or not, depending on one's POV. Good company to keep, too, with the OSFS gang -- or at least as many as could show up for this one -- watching it along with me.
I'm pleased enough with it. I don't know that I'd go back for a second look just yet, but that's okay.
