Confession: I never met the man. Or at least, given the state of my memory right now, I don't recall the meeting if it ever did happen.

I know what he gave to me as an X-Men and Legion fan, though, if nothing else. And I know of others who got some of that same joy and wonder from his handiwork, probably more than I did in several cases. Some of them have already posted on their own blogs or Usenet or elsewhere. And if they haven't, then it's only a matter of time.

So all I have as a stranger and a reader is this to say:

Ave atque vale, Mr. Cockrum.

Damn. That's terrible news. I have met, and spoke to Dave on number of occasions. When we were both at least "tolorated" at the new Marvel we tried pitching a Storm as the first earth Pheonix story for an X-MEN Unlimited thing, so Dave could use that original White Pheonix costume that was supposed to be Jean's before it was changed to a green and yellow thing due to the bleed factor of the pages back in the 70s.

That is terrible news, I need to e-mail Paty... I knew he was in a bad way, last time I saw him he was in a wheelchair, but in good spirits, still talking to the fans and just being a hell of a guy.

That news hit me like a ton of bricks. I don't know what to say.

There will never be another like him.
