The building to come, meant to host both the Main Branch of the Ottawa Public Library and the geneology resources of Library and Archives Canada in years to come, now has a name: Ādisōke.

Spark is discussing the problem of "link rot" this week. It's an ongoing issue for all of us, I suspect, depending on how old our respective weblogs are. I'm guilty of aggravating the problem by way of not correcting links between blog entries here since moving the whole blog over from LiveJournal to Dreamwidth back in 2017, for example.

Also, I think that paywalls aggravate the "link rot" problem. But what to do to keep those old news services' archives preserved and available without undermining peoples' efforts to keep earning whatever living they can?

Saw the dentist, got my checkup and cleaning...and saw such things as made me immediately wish for DentiCare as proposed by the NDP to be in force right bloody now. It's not like I'm going to lose All The Teeth any time soon, mind you, and I'll probably be able to manage the bill once the work's done. Kicking myself again for my lack of flossing technique, my food appetites, and the slow advance of the years.

Also, got more work done on the photo-tagging in iPhoto after supper tonight. Sixteen years of digital photography of things of interest to me...and the ways the city's changed as I've lived in it. It hits like Popeye's "twisker sock" must feel when it hits the likes of Bluto/Brutus.

Listening to CBC's Cross-Country Checkup at the moment. Subject today is the value and future of public libraries and archives, particular in the "digital age". Guest host is Peter Mansbridge, and you might want to listen to it either live or via podcast.

Some concerns of note and substance are being raised in the discussion today.

Some items of interest:

From CBC's Sunday Edition: A smallish town in Belgium has some interesting ideas going back a couple of centuries regarding mental health care.

In Scotland, some people are arguing over whether or not the Québecois example has anything to teach their debate on resuming independence from the UK. Sadly, I think the Parti Québecois has lost its footing on the progressive/small-l liberal path in recent years...or had it undermined from within, if Pierre-Karl Peladeau's presence is anything to go by.

There's a science-fiction archive to be rescued in California.

I was born too late for the days of Canada Student Grants. That annoys me in itself. Then I see stuff like this continuing to happen to people around me. Such news annoys me even more than the eight years I spent paying off my animation studies' student loan.

More as the day wears on...

Rummaging through the Ottawa sections of the Skyscraper Page Forums for topics of interest.

You might want to rummage there too, whether or not your city has a section there. There's some fun to be had by science-fiction-minded architecture and design fandom...

Some of you already know of this magazine: it specializes in chronicling the work that goes into special effects in the film industry.

Seems that someone wants to build an on-line chronicle for web users, with the publishers' permission and support. But they need support from other sources as well. Hence this Kickstarter project...

I've started up something new on Flickr:

Orléans, East of Ottawa

Our focus: Photography done in and around the borough of Orléans, in the eastern reaches of the city of Ottawa, from its earliest days post-settlement to the present.

If you've taken pix of the neighbourhood, on the ground or in the air, from Convent Glen to Avalon, those pix are welcome in this particular Flickr group!

Most of you have heard of archive.org, right?

Well, there's a Canadian arm of that operation, and they could use some major-league help right about now.

Okay...a few quick notes:

I've just uploaded some pix from the October 2004 meeting of the Ottawa SF Society. This meeting was notable for having Julie Czerneda as guest speaker.

Posting this from Bridgehead's Glebe location while wrapping up an early supper. After which I expect to attend another meeting of the organizing committee for Can-Con 2011. Things are picking up steam on that score, and if I'm not able to update you on the preparations, it's my hope that another of the board will be doing so shortly after the meeting breaks for the night.

More as I think of it, unless you think of it first...

As a fan of the best that the CBC has to offer, I was pleasantly surprised to learn from a recent posting on the Drawn! blog of this archive recently established online by the Mothercorp devoted to Canadian comic strip and book history as it was being covered.

There are several obvious "holes", of course, but given how much material the CBC Archives still has at hand across the country even now, it's a happy surprise to see that they've been able to get this much material into one website thus far. Hopefully, CBC will be expanding upon this base in the years ahead.
