I just got reminded by LJ: it's [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako's birthday today, and here Marvel's already given a gift - accidentally or not - that tops anything I could buy or draw: the launch of Agents of SHIELD tonight on TV.

Happy birthday to you in any case, [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako, and here's hoping everyone watching that show tonight has fun with it!

Some of you have likely already read of this situation through other sources. For those who haven't yet heard, this link to the Joe Shuster Awards webnews should province some assistance:

I've been to the Beguiling at least once thus far. Never been in Honest Ed's that I can remember, but it seems too charming a place from what I've seen of it to lose either.

How's this for a mirror in pen and ink? Not for all of us, but for some?

Well, that was a good one. Bought Galaxion Books 1 and 2 from [livejournal.com profile] ttallan, got caught up with a dozen or so other friends and friendly acquaintances from around the region, got my memory refreshed on the state of planet-hunting research by a gent from the Carleton U physics department...all in all, an entertaining day.

Also, hopefully today I get the MacBook Pro back from the Apple repair shop. New logic board should have been thoroughly checked out by now, and I plan on dropping back into the downtown between panels to pick the thing up.

(Yes, I know: I could pay as much for a refurbished old MBP as for repairs on the one I've got. What can I say?)

Hoping to start the day at CAN-CON 2012 Day 2 with [livejournal.com profile] mcwetboy's slideshow on maps in reality and fiction. Because, cartography in science fiction?

Fun.

No, I'm not kidding.

Just to refresh your memories: the Ottawa Small Press Book Fair's "Spring 2012" Edition is today!

Hoping to see you there!

Yes, there are regular gatherings of cartoonists scattered across Canada. If you're reading this in a town that doesn't have one, and you want to go to one? I'd suggest you start a group on Facebook and/or Diaspora. Or possibly here on LJ?

Oh, and keep Sam and me posted?

Okay, this is filed accordingly:

So. It's raining outside. In Ottawa, in December.

This has been part of the "normal" state of affairs in terms of the weather for so long that I cannot remember a year I've spent in this city when December did not start with rainfall. It's almost a historical certainty that my memory is wrong on this point, and yet.

And yet...

Okay, the weather rant of the week is over and done. Time to discuss comics stuff.

In an attempt to get my brain back onto working ON comics, I've been refocusing my internet attentions on specific message boards and mailing lists. I've also organized the Orléans-East Ottawa Comix Jam.

It is my intent that this event be able to continue to function without me, seeing as my day-job situation may again force me to avoid attending sessions scheduled during the Sunday-to-Thursday timeframe, once I have a day-job again. It's done so re: the Ottawa Comix Jams as organized by Sue Marsden over the last couple of years, which I've enjoyed and which inspired this branch edition out here in the east end of Ottawa outside the Greenbelt.

That said: the first edition was sparsely attended, but that may well be a good thing. Also showing up for that first session was one Dominic Bercier of Mirror Comics. Mirror is a local outfit, which has three mini-series under their belt so far, and they're mainly focusing their attentions on the Net.

The consequences of that first session can be viewed at this Picasa gallery. Dominic and I both hope you'll enjoy what's there, and that you'll take a further look at Mirror Comics' material in short order.

If you live anywhere east of St. Laurent Boulevard and you've an interest in comics and/or animation from that of fan to professional, I hope you'll show up once we've got the next one scheduled and announced. More on that to come, here and elsewhere across the Web...

I'll be at this show tomorrow, running my table one more time. Sketchbooks and sketches for sale, as usual!

Details here:

Hoping to see as many of the Ottawans reading this as possible, and more...

A while back, I bemoaned the lack of a bookstore devoted to things like graphic design, typography, calligraphy, architecture and other such topics of interest here in Ottawa. We used to have such a store on one or two occasions, the Architectural Book Store first, and then - by accidental consequence of their main business for a while there, Computer Supplyhouse. The first shut down, and the second now seems to be working at completely getting out of bookselling in order to focus on computer hardware.

It is a joy to pass the word along that another store is in the process of picking up where those stores have left off. It's called the Canteen Art Shop, on 238 Dalhousie on the eastern edge of the ByWard Market.

A particularly pleasant surprise was finding one volume devoted to nothing but bar design! A bit on the pricey side it was, but I still wish I'd had that book handy when I was working on at least one earlier comics project! Maybe the public library can be talked into stocking it in the collection as a hedge against future needs of cartoonists of all skill levels?

Every so often on a Tuesday night in the summer months between semesters at Algonquin College, instructor Rich Lauzon holds forth in B Building's Rotunda/Portable Feast room, inviting animation, game design and other arts students past and present to get together and sketch whatever suits'em.

I happened to be there for the session the night before Canada Day 2009.

If you're an artist yourself, and the Algonquin Campus off of Baseline Transitway Station's within easy reach for you on the right night of the month in the summer, you might want to have a look.

Just thought I'd post a reminder:

Yes, I'm still working on Local Hero with Ian Gould. We're hopeful of getting the second issue out later this year, but seeing as there's a bit of "dead time" in my "night job" schedule right now for various reasons outside of my control, I wouldn't be averse to doing a few "one-off" commissions and such like for interested parties.

Just saying...

Stolen shamelessly from [livejournal.com profile] dvandom:

The first three people to ask for 'em gets sketches of any character. You may want to provide references if you're not sure I know the character, and if I've already drawn a finished version of the character you may want to pick someone else. If you wish to continue the meme, post this italicized bit in your own LJ.

As a fan of the best that the CBC has to offer, I was pleasantly surprised to learn from a recent posting on the Drawn! blog of this archive recently established online by the Mothercorp devoted to Canadian comic strip and book history as it was being covered.

There are several obvious "holes", of course, but given how much material the CBC Archives still has at hand across the country even now, it's a happy surprise to see that they've been able to get this much material into one website thus far. Hopefully, CBC will be expanding upon this base in the years ahead.

A random selection of stuff of interest to me tonight:

Antonia Zerbisias raises a fair concern about the possible future of the CBC...a possible future I find as unpalatable as the idea of it being shut down permanently. Her closing question disturbs me, because she might be right to ask: "Did we all (miss the vote)?"

[livejournal.com profile] thebitterguy notes a recent essay on Infinite Crisis, one that I have to admit reads as an inevitable comparison of assorted persons, given the days we live in.

CBC News notes the relationship between the Prime Ministers of Canada and Australia. I find this ringing true and disturbing all at once. Especially seeing as Mr. Howard's currently spending an overnighter here in Ottawa.

More of interest as I find it...and now back to you.

Some random notes:

1. Okay, this particular CSI comics project announcement amuses me no end. I suppose that from the moment the first CSI comic book was announced way back when, something like this project was bound to happen. Makes me think of the missed opportunities Alliance-Atlantis had where due SOUTH was concerned. Especially when you think of Chicago's tradition as a home to comics conventions. Do you suppose that the writers never knew of that aspect of Chicago, or if they did, was it considered too easy a target?

2. Still working on Local Hero with all possible speed, FYI. Some personal life complications in the mix, but they're being dealt with.

3. Still looking for those opinions on the Greatest Canadian Journalists, if anyone cares to speak up. Here's the link.

4. Trying to think of an item...
