dewline: Doctor Who quote: Books. Best Weapons in the World (Books)
From one of the banners in the underground lab at the start of the movie:

NASA
Missions

Joint Dark Energy Mission
Western Division

Advanced Dark Energy Physics Telescope (ADEPT)

Cosmic Inflation Probe (CIP)
or Cosmic Expansion Probe (CEP)

Dark Energy Space Telescope (DESTINY)

Supernova Acceleration Probe-Lensing (SNAP-L)

J.D.E.M.

I don't think any of those projects exist.

Yet.

Also...web portfolio of one of the movie's design team, including some of his visual inspirations:

Definitely liked Bryan Hitch's Ultimates work, didn't he?

Yes, there are regular gatherings of cartoonists scattered across Canada. If you're reading this in a town that doesn't have one, and you want to go to one? I'd suggest you start a group on Facebook and/or Diaspora. Or possibly here on LJ?

Oh, and keep Sam and me posted?

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] thebitterguy for pointing this out via Facebook earlier tonight!

To explain:

Back in the early 1990's, I learned of this little treasure on TVOntario put together by Rick Green, Mark Askwith and a bunch of other people called Prisoners of Gravity.

It was a show about science fiction, each instalment covering a different theme or sub-genre. Interviews with most of the names of the day, whether from novels, comics, TV...it was Space Channel before we actually had Space Channel on the cable dials of Canada.

When it went off the air for the last time, word got out that legal issues of one sort or another would likely do a "WKRP"-style number on hopes of ever seeing it again within the law.

Looks like TVO won the good fight, people:

Go. Enjoy.

Has "Fifth Generation Technology" really been trademarked? Kady O'Malley seems to believe so.

David Brin finds much to praise in Obama's latest State of the Union address. The rest of us might have missed the best part, if he's right.

Mark Zuckerberg puts his corporate foot in it again. Not without my permission you don't, boyo, and no matter what your lawyers say my signing the terms of service means, I still don't grant it! If the advertisers dealing with you want to quote me, they can just ask me directly and I will decide, case by individual case.

Closing note: Seems like this past week, I've become popular with spammers as a target hereabouts. I've deleted a spam reply a day on average for the last 5-10 days. Interesting.

Someone whose work I'd read regularly back in the late 1980's and early 1990's was Peter B. Gillis. Some of you may remember Strikeforce: Morituri. That was one of his when it started out, published through Marvel once upon a time.

He's still alive, it seems, and a while back, I stumbled across one of his short stories on his weblog.

It seemed to fit the Season, in a Twilight Zone way, and I still like it now.

So...for your reading pleasure now:

A Visit from Old Nick

Enjoy or don't, as the moment requires.

Another piece for Spacing Ottawa went live on their blog this morning.

Some of you may recall Justin as a founder of the original publicbroadcasting.ca and the organizer of nxew.ca. If you didn't know, he's got a new blog and here's the feed on LJ for it:

Well. I go out for the early evening to attend the city's transportation services open house at the Orléans Rec Centre on Youville and Jeanne d'Arc and the world gets a little busier.

My friend Chris Miller's launched a blog to go with his update of the DCU timeline theory site I told you about earlier. I've got a feed set up for it: [livejournal.com profile] smartmemes. Add it or visit the site yourself. At the very least you'll be entertained by intelligent arguments.

Not unlike what I heard from various parties at the Open House. The mayor showed up, as did two of the local members of city council. I hope to post pictures, maybe tomorrow if I'm fast and lucky.

Spacecraft design nut that I am, [livejournal.com profile] drawn_ca pointed out something that I didn't want to miss: a blog about that very topic in the entertainment industry, apparently: Concept Ships. Looks cool, and you might find some Galactica goodies if you look carefully! (Warning: Bandwidth-intensive!)

More to follow...

I've added a couple of feeds to my friendlist. One's an friend of long standing, the other a relative stranger with whom I believe I have some common cause.

The friend is J. Torres. You may know of his work for various publishers including Image, DC, Oni and elsewhere. He's got a blog now, and I'm including the feed here for everyone interested: [livejournal.com profile] jtorresonline

The acquaintance is David Morse. He's working on Robson Arms, a sitcom/drama hybrid series airing on CTV. Seeing as I've already got a number of other blogs by writers working in Canada's film and TV trade feeding into my flist, it seemed a good idea to add this one too: [livejournal.com profile] davidmosesblog.

Speaking of the arts...I am somewhat displeased with our new mayor, Larry O'Brien. You may read of the details of what I consider an error in his judgement as a citizen and politician here care of the CBC. No, I'm not happy with him right now. I suppose I expected as much in last fall's civic elections, but in this case it's a disappointment to see him confirm that fear.

Lots of muddling through stuff tonight:
  • Added Johanna Draper-Carlson's Comics Worth Reading to my Friends feeds.
  • Made progress inking pages.
  • Also progress on related design stuff.
  • Reading UTOpia, a book of essays on how Toronto might ideally evolve as a city over the next couple of decades, if they're careful and lucky. Fans of comic-book urban design issues might want to have a look-see. Particularly for a map by one Andrew Alfred-Duggan. Googling has not allowed me to track down a website for the man himself, but I know where his day-job map company is.

More later...

...and yes, Arune Singh (whom I spoke of last posting) is an ex-pat from Toronto down in the US Southwest at present.

Anyway, today's shout-out goes to another example of Good Comics People, Mark Shainblum, out of Montréal. His regular website's here, if you want a look-see.

Mark, in concert with assorted others, particularly Gabriel Morissette, gave us Northguard and Angloman, two polar opposites in approach to Canadian super-heroes if I've ever seen such in my life, ranging from hard realism to political satire. He's currently scripting the webcomic Canadiana, the New Spirit of Canada among other jobs he's doing, which is leaning more to the "Northguard" school than not. For the right audience, that's definitely a good thing in my POV.
