Dec. 24th, 2022 09:32 amI've noted this in years past: in 2002, on Christmas Day, my father died of metastasized renal cell cancer. Some forty years earlier, a cousin of mine was born on Christmas Day.
The day has been a mixed blessing for my extended family across the decades, and I wait and wonder what twists the occasion will bring this time.
And so...here is us again. Those of us still here, anyway.
It's been a wild year, running the full range of emotion from joy to despair.
I wish you the best possible greetings of the Season, by whatever Name(s) you choose to honour it. I wish you peace, hope, wisdom, freedom, justice, and love. If you do not find them, may they find you and may it bring joy to you when they do.

Julie Czerneda, Hockey and Reindeer
Dec. 24th, 2021 04:56 pmI am listening to All In a Day on CBC Radio One, and Alan Neal is fielding questions from kids about Christmas. One about what do reindeer enjoy games-wise got pivoted to SF writer Julie Czerneda - turns out she's also a biologist! - and Julie just improvised an answer about how antlers can be repurposed as hockey sticks!
(Yes, Julie and I chat on occasion at bookstores, at Can-Con events, and so on.)

In any case, whatever you observe or celebrate at this time of year, I hope that this Season is kind to you.

A Rejection of Coal
Dec. 24th, 2020 03:26 pmCoal should never be in Christmas stockings ever again. Because climate derangement is real.
It is raining on Christmas Eve in Ottawa-Gatineau. Again. So I think of things like this.
Yes, there will be snow tomorrow night, on the evening of the day itself.
But it still feels wrong now.
Back to looking for work...

Another Yule, Another Wish

Christmas Eve 2016
Dec. 24th, 2016 08:27 amSo...here is us again. Those of us still here, anyway.
I am torn right now between hope and fear. Torn. I've seen so much in this past two months...the year's end after the crimes of 9/11/2001 did not leave me this torn.
Still.
I wish you the best possible greetings of the Season, by whatever Name(s) you choose to honour it. I wish you peace, hope, wisdom, freedom, justice, and love. If you do not find them, may they find you and may it bring joy to you when they do.

When Christmas is Hard
Dec. 25th, 2013 08:09 pmAs mentioned before, there have been years when it was hard to get through the Season. And such years will no doubt come again, on whatever schedule suits them.
ms_danson just pointed out something worth looking at for those times when it does, for whatever reason(s) end up applying in your respective cases.
Please have a look. Just in case.

Christmas Day
Dec. 25th, 2013 05:57 pmSo...keeping my mind off the sadder anniversary, hm?
I took a walk this morning. The kind of walk I take less often than I should these days, according to several of my past GPs as well as my current doctor. The weather was clear-skies bright, cold enough to notice without being overly painful about it.
Others travelling about in that included a few in cars trying to either visit someone or get home from visiting. I saw a car with a BC license plate; They must be a long way from home, or perhaps just trying to settle into a new one. Two joggers, several dog-walkers as well.
Have you ever noticed that when dogs are walked in pairs, should you approach them as a stranger? One will be curious, the other defensive. Guaranteed, almost without fail.
Also, security guards in their company cars watching the parking lots of the local malls. Not police. Private security. I wonder sometimes what it's like doing that job. Remembering also that when I was taking animation classes at Algonquin, we shared the building we were in during those years with Law Enforcement as well as maybe at most a dozen other programs, not all of them obviously connected to each other: Graphic Design, Journalism(Print), Nursing, Museum Tech...and Algonquin's added a few more buildings since then, as well as tearing down the one we were using.
Convenience stores being the only ones open within walking distance. Everything else was closed up today.
All in all, a good walk. Quiet. Not enforced quiet either, but relaxed quiet. Quiet that was comfortable in its own skin. A good thing for this day in this part of the world.

Speaking of Gifts

Owing to Christmas and Boxing Days, this work week is going to be truncated.
I've still got presents to draw for certain relatives. Owing to the family celebrating a combination of Gregorian and Julian calendar editions, though, I may yet have a little time to get that done well.
That, and some laundry chores.
More later...
