I never learned this in either Geometry or Drafting classes!

I think this was my fifth letter in almost as many weeks since learning of the service reduction news re: Canada Post.

Tonight's hardcopy-mail is off to the Vinyl Cafe. Seems like a good time to sign my name to a thank-you note to Stuart McLean for his work these past decades. I've called him "the most ruthless storyteller in Canada" and yes, that's still intended as a compliment. Based on his interview with Broadcasting Canada host Kevin Caners, I suspect he would deny himself the title. No matter. The "Dave and Morley" stories are that good.

More on other stuff as the evening wears on, I hope...

Slate has cobbled together their (well educated) idea of the best in space photography for this year still in progress:

Enjoy it when you can...

There ought to be a second Bon Cop, Bad Cop movie. Colm Feore's still tied up working on The Borgias, though, right? And what about Patrick Huard?

More on other stuff later today.

What's wrong about wanting something like this for the LRT in Ottawa?

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ms_danson for this.

It took me a week to get around to watching.

Worth the wait.

Greg Rucka and Matthew Southworth's Stumptown Volume One from Oni Press. I just finished another read-through of that one tonight after getting home from the day-job.

I'm a sucker for a Rockford-style private eye story, I guess.

One of my co-contributors on Spacing Ottawa, Eric Darwin, has pointed out something that is potentially both Useful and Just Damn Cool: Parkmobiles. Go have a look. See if it doesn't strike you as a good idea for your city or town.

How cool is it that we live in an age that we can see stuff like this?

I want these maps.

If you run a bookstore, you should want to stock them. Fast.

I finally saw Bon Cop, Bad Cop tonight at the local Empire movie-house.

As I suspected: worth the money and the time.

The funny parts, at their best -- and I say this as a compliment to all involved -- left me laughing so hard I started coughing. Hard. Even when the humour got downright morbid, as it will in a mystery/action film where your hero-cops are chasing a serial killer.

As I said to [livejournal.com profile] cath a little while ago, if you liked 48 Hours and/or the Lethal Weapon movies, you'll like this one.

If you want a full, spoiler-laden list of reasons...well, let me know. I'll see how I can best accomodate you...

PS: Anyone here been able to safely find out if the soundtrack is DRM-free?

With apologies to a certain musician whose name is unavailable for immediate recall for the title. The rephrase seemed to fit, given recent comments from [livejournal.com profile] vonandmoggy, particularly "Moggy", as well as my own observations from recent visits to Centretown here in Ottawa.

One of the perils of summer in Centretown is that everyone and their third cousin twice removed decides -- with just cause, I hasten to add -- to get in on the construction/demolition/renovation/reconstruction/retrofitting craze that begins the moment the thermometer climbs consistently above 15°C.

Thus far, I've seen:
  • a row of restaurants, furriers and whatnot demolished to make room for the regional HQ of what used to be just the Alberta phone company.
  • assorted streets, a block at a time, getting ripped up to allow for retrofitting of sewage, hydro, water, IT and other modern infrastructure.
  • the World Exchange Plaza getting its ground floors' exteriors a Very Thorough Cleaning.
And the list goes on.

Loads of fun to watch, and I should take a camera to it someday soon, before the heavy iron involved gets spirited away to some other batch of similar sites elsewhere in town.
