dewline: Highway Sign version of "Ottawa the City" Icon (city life)
I'm watching the Built Heritage Committee meeting about this (and other proposals) at the moment.

I didn't know that the old Legion House had already had three extra stories tacked on three years after it was originally opened up. That precedent being established, I'm only mildly surprised by this proposal to raise it to 30 stories. Details here:

Been looking at assorted development applications for sites around Orléans tonight, in addition to the other stuff I've been up to. I think it's become an offshoot of my old job search habits, my most recent contract's focus on document review, and a few other old habits. I loved clipping zoning notices out of the Leader-Post when I was a kid, partly because of the maps usually included by city hall. Nowadays, the city hall website provides so much more stuff to read with each application. Which makes for fun reading, because I like looking at blueprints in general, too. If I can't get out of the neighbourhood much for physical exploring, this is a good substitute.

We now have a Haiku Street in Ottawa!

Watching the Ottawa Planning Committee meeting via YouTube this morning, while searching and researching other stuff in my life. If you're interested in Ottawa Planning Committee agenda for today:

1. Writing workshop today was okay.

2. So was the refresher from Ottawa City Hall on urban planning basics. They hold this class every few months for whoever is interested. The online version over Zoom was as packed as the one I attended in person back in the winter of 2019-2020. (At least I think it was back then.)

3. Still haven't seen WandaVision. Still resigned to spoilers because Disney+. Sounds like I'm missing out on fun stuff. Oh well.

4. More as it occurs to me.

Rummaging through the Ottawa sections of the Skyscraper Page Forums for topics of interest.

You might want to rummage there too, whether or not your city has a section there. There's some fun to be had by science-fiction-minded architecture and design fandom...

Maybe it's because I spend so much time exploring both the real city I live in and the fictional ones I've written about and read other peoples' writings about...but it strikes me that Cities Without Ground, this book on the networks of underground and elevated walking pathways established in Hong Kong - or (among other names) Xiānggǎng - might be worth a look-see. At the very least, perhaps a recommendation to our local public libraries might be in order?

So [livejournal.com profile] rfmcdpei pointed out this article in the Toronto Star tonight.

Summed up: Toronto's deputy mayor Doug Holyday got into a bit of a scrap with Councillor Adam Vaughan about the suitability of downtown cores as a place to raise families.

Here's what I told Randy:

One of the things I've noticed about Ottawa is that there are still parts of the downtown where people are raising their kids. It may not be a choice I'd make if I were a parent, but there's been arrangements made to make such things reasonably close to safe enough. I like the fact that our city's been making those efforts, however imperfect they may be in fact or perception.

And that's my imperfectly polite response to Holyday's opinion.

And that response stands.

So, I went to this discussion on how to (re)build a better suburb last month. Allegra Newman hosted it, and here's the story with some pix from yours truly.

[livejournal.com profile] spacing_ottawa just announced an experiment you might be interested in: Spacington. Some of you SimCity players past and present may want to have a gander at it and report back about your impressions.

Also, I decided to Watch [livejournal.com profile] toronto starting this week, especially in the wake of the latest kerfuffles about Transit City having a halfway decent chance of a full-blown resurrection rather than mere "zombie" status at Toronto City Hall. For better views of the situation, you might want to keep an eye on both Spacing Toronto and the Toronto Star.

More on other stuff later in the day...

While checking out [livejournal.com profile] spacing_ottawa's sister weblogs, I came across an entry of interest re: the "intensification" doctrine of urban redevelopment in older neighbourhoods: The Genius of Walk-Up Apartments. Written by Alex Bozikovic and Toronto-focused, I'm finding myself thinking that this does have applications across the country if not the planet.

Opinions?
