Wondering what the rules are where you live re: having a food-growing garden in your front yard...?

As far as I'm aware, it's ok. But not commonly done, and I can't find evidence in the Ottawa bylaws against it. My parents grow lettuce, tomatoes and sometimes other veggies in the pathway to the front door. They do have an "official" garden for fruit/veggies in the backyard though.

I don't know what the laws are, but several of my neighbours do it. That said, at least one of those households never shovels their sidewalk (I fell on it once), and I know there are by-laws against THAT.

As far as I know, where I live it's perfectly fine to have a veggie gardens. Junk cars in your yard, now that's a completely different matter.

I've seen a few households breaking that rule.

I think it's okay, but uncommon. A quick e-mail to your city councilor should be able to confirm that.

It seems to be okay for Ottawa. We're agreed there.

You may have heard about the plans of Drummondville council to ban such gardens via CBC in recent weeks, and apparently similar rules are in place in Edmonton. So I've started wondering about other cities and towns...
