From this morning's hardcopy edition of the Ottawa Citizen, by David Reevely:

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Uncertainty+over+Lansdowne+cinema+engulfs+World+Exchange/8864752/story.html

A couple of reactions...

1. As I told Reevely on Facebook, having read the article, I'm surprised that the movie-screening rooms at Place de Ville are still intact after two decades, given that so much else of the underground mall there as originally built is now given over to governmental offices and meeting spaces.

2. I see that Diane Deans has reached a similar opinion to mine re: the downtown core and the expected influx of new residents adding to the need for cinema screening rooms. Could there be an impetus sufficient to rescue World Exchange, revive Rideau Centre *and* Place de Ville, and preserve Lansdowne, Mayfair and Bytowne?

I'd announced a Friday trip to see Iron Man 3 in normal, 2-D format on the Ottawa SF Society's meetup.com page. The only thing I thought I needed to worry about was which theatre for us to meet at.

Either the movie theatre chains or Disney-Marvel - perhaps both, as I am not privy to the details - may have pre-empted my plans and forced me to wait for the DVD.

I'm not seeing any times for this upcoming Friday night at any Ottawa movie theatre via ottawakiosk.com as of this morning.

This relationship does not seem to be what it once was.

A reminder of that fact was driven home tonight when I went to Silver City Gloucester to see Avengers again. Based on the newspaper listings, I expected to be able to see a 6:50 PM showing.

Didn't happen. The only showing available tonight will be at 9:50 PM. Those of you who already know my transportation specifics can figure out the problem with that.

The temptation to go into rant mode is there...but, no. There are bigger issues to rant about than this. I'll wait for it to get to Rainbow or Mayfair Orléans.

If anyone wanting to go with me has the Silver City Gloucester complex in mind:

(For that matter, feel free to use it for your own trip-scheduling no matter when or with whom you want to see it.)

Some of you will remember that my first article for Spacing Ottawa was an opinion piece on what should be done with the movie theatre at the Orléans Town Centre mall.

Since then, the Mayfair Theatre management took the place over, and have been operating the place as I'd hoped someone might for the past five months. They're running into some difficulties, and I'd very much like to see those difficulties remedied and the Mayfair Orléans continue for the long haul as is.

Details from the Mayfair management themselves can be found here.

I want to see this movie in Ottawa, especially after listening to actor Jay Baruchel and director Jason Tierney yuk it up with Jian Ghomeshi on Q about the movie, Québec/Canada politics, and assorted other topics two days ago:

Trouble is, I'm worried that when it gets to Ottawa it's gonna end up confined to either the Mayfair or the Bytowne. Which means I'm likely to have to wait for the DVD, if I don't hear about the movie theatres' scheduling soon enough.

Which would be a shame, given that I enjoyed The Trotsky last year.

Saw the show tonight.

Worth. The. Money.

Helen Mirren with a machine gun. Karl Urban playing Jack Ryan without having to try to be Jack Ryan. Richard Dreyfuss chomping on scenery.

And that's for starters. Anything more is spoiler turf.

The prices for snacks and meals at movie houses, though, are still highway robbery. And they don't sell milk. At all.

This must be remedied to my satisfaction. Soon.

Second-run movie houses are an under-appreciated resource in any city or town.
