Even if this does increase yields, if it increases costs even a little (by making access to farm machinery more difficult, say, or by compromising PV performance even slightly) it can be a failure. This is especially true for low price crops like staples or crops raised for animal feed -- the crops that dominate farmed area.

Maybe it could be useful for niche high value crops? Or maybe the area should be devoted to native species for an ecological benefit.
