I've been listening to two pieces of music: "The Winter Soldier" and "HYDRA", composed by Henry Jackman for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

That movie was NOT supposed to be a docudrama, damn it.

...and why he's now in the process of doing exactly that, as seen by a reader instead of by Coates himself:

Coates' own thoughts on the subject are quoted there, and there's a link to his fuller thoughts in this essay.

So I'm finding myself reading this retrospective/interview with Hugo Weaving on his career to date. Some comic book movie-watchers pay attention to a particular item re: The First Avenger.

Much respect to Mr. Weaving, and the Skull's first apparant MCU demise did seem ambiguously staged by design.

But maybe it's all the comebacks and "last stands" his character's comics counterpart has made over the decades since being revived in the 1960's, particularly the one in the latter group staged by J.M. deMatteis, Paul Neary and company in the 1980's. Frankly, I am feeling increasingly cheated by every revival of the Skull in the comics. The latest "How would the Skull take the "what would you do about Hitler if you could time-travel to his childhood" question and turn it on its head?" plotline now running in Steve Rogers: Captain America...even more disturbing in its way.

Anyway. I think I'd prefer to leave Weaving's performance in The First Avenger stand as its own thing.

Just a thought.

Yes, I saw the movie on Friday night. Much to my pleased surprise, as I suspect that the 2D-formatted edition would be playing to an already packed house for the 520 PM showing I wanted to attend. Apparently, in this day and age of advance ticket sales over the web, being the first one at the box office to show up and buy a ticket personally can still count for something.

I think I want to wait a couple of days before posting the bulk of my thoughts on the film.

I will say this: they remedied one of my concerns raised by one of the trailers. Ross' video presentation to the Avengers? The one with the "Casualties" figures? With "23" cited for Washington, the Battle of the Triskelion in The Winter Soldier? In the finished version I saw in the cinema house, it was "Civilian Casualties".

Solved.

More and hopefully deeper thoughts later in the week. And I intend to go back for at least a second viewing.

This is my own jarring moment of disbelief, in this screencap from the newer trailer.

The figure that draws my attention, circled in red.

Three Helicarriers, with embarked air wings, and the crew counts that probably entails...and this is the casualty number they go with here for the Battle of the Triskelion?

I'll still see the movie, because I suspect we're in for a good show otherwise. But this detail breaks the believability a bit for me. Even with the evacuation of the SHIELD HQ complex in progress.

So, that anthem backing the visuals for that movie's trailers has a name...

There's this band, the New Pornographers. You might have heard of them. They put out an album in 2007, Challengers. The title song, as you'll figure out from the lyrics, is a nod to the DC characters of the same ilk. No idea which incarnation(s) of the team are favoured by which musicians in the band, mind you.

I'm starting to tie two other songs on that album in my mind to specific series or characters: "Deus Ex Machina" to Doctor Who, "Adventures in Solitude" to Captain America. Something in the lyrics of each song fits each series.

I doubt that mental association was intended by the band at the time, but it works for me.

And you?

From The Winter Solder? Where Fury and Romanova dumped SHIELD's stuff onto the Internet?

Did they have the time to work out what parameters they needed to "decide" what files to release and which to sit on? Because this little question-asking session over at MarvelMeta from five months earlier raised the thought in my mind. Also, having watched Citizenfour, it occurred to me that for all the craziness Edward Snowden brought down on himself, he still managed to make the time to find people like Greenwald and Poitras to help him start figuring out what had to go public ASAP and what had to be sat on indefinitely for the good of international security.

Given the situation with Project: Insight - a matter of hours before the three Helicarriers launched their mass-murder programming - Fury, Romanova, Hill, Rogers, Wilson and whoever else was helping behind the scenes may not have had that luxury of time and contemplation. So, the situation may well be as described by Gavia Baker-Whitelaw: "Thanks to Natasha's Snowden-esque leak, anyone with internet access can now read everything from SHIELD's black ops missions to the Helicarrier specs to Hawkeye's psych evaluations. Civilians now know precisely how much SHIELD has been hiding from them all these years..."

Thoughts?

(Yeah, this is the kind of thing that my brain turns back towards while I'm trying to clear out my sinuses over the weekend.)

Okay...this is going to be a bit of a ramble.

Spoilers after the cut )

I'm probably forgetting and ignoring other issues of interest, aren't I?

And kicked off by seeing Captain America: the Winter Soldier on Friday night.

Let me leave it at this for now: it was worth the time and the money.

More as it comes to mind.

Cap - Winter Soldier Wordmarks
In order: Spanish, German(!), Japanese, French and Russian. Clipped from the various trailers via YouTube and Grab.

Interesting revelations of typography, marketing approach by country and font design here...

Just saw it a few minutes ago on YouTube.

I'm feeling that good buzz building on this one...

Some linkages of interest, which I thank [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll for pointing out and prompting others to point out in the course of the conversation he triggered:

Considering that we're halfway between Avengers and Winter Soldier, it seems like a good time to put linkages to these three opinions on the same page and let everyone who cares to do so cut loose with their own POVs. Which of these works for you, which doesn't and either way, why?

...as I just saw the Winter Soldier trailer.

My compliments to the responsible parties.

So...did those boats get names to go with their pennant numbers?
