Making a note of this:

https://verakurian.substack.com/p/the-emotional-bomb-of-your-book-coming

My "debut" book - whether we're talking about as a writer or an illustrator - came out decades ago, and my creative career has fizzled a lot since then. Some of that was almost certain due to not knowing this advice should have been there for me to heed. I've managed to survive despite that.

(Certainly, I was and still am stuck in a family largely, passively disinterested in the things I care about. Can't be helped.)

Anyway, there we are for now.

Steve Lieber mentioned on BlueSky recently that the comics artform and industry alike can benefit from an updating of this page:

I mentioned in reply that I could probably make some time to update the Ottawa-Gatineau section. Sadly, we lost Suzanne Marsden three years ago, and the Ottawa Comix Jam sessions were her Big Project of keeping the community connected to itself and the larger city and comics creators' community of North America.

Writers, artists of all branch-disciplines, and so on...

More on this to come, I think.

...somewhere here on Dreamwidth.

I can't remember who it is that said it, and I want to credit them for the inspiration.

It was [personal profile] radiantfracture, and thank you for that!

Seems like this matters. Hoping they can hold the awards ceremonies safely!

So.

Martin died Sunday night and I found out late Monday. Other people knew him better than I did. I was one of a few hundred friendly semi-regular acquaintances of his on Facebook. I enjoyed some of his comics writing, and probably some of his TV scripting too without making the connection until today.

Oh, and I got reminded by the various obits of this: he started out Canadian. Born in Québec under another name.

It still hurts.

Glad I knew him at all, though.

...and speaking of essays on Tor.com from friendlisters inspiring unexpected finds: [personal profile] mcwetboy just wrote a thing on how fantasy maps might or might not fit into the worlds of the stories they're made to serve:

In the process, he pointed out a thing that I didn't know existed in any nation: Map Reading Week. If anyone knows of a Canadian counterpart, that might get my attention too!

A conclusion I've reached after watching this week's episode...

Something I'd be glad to start seeing on The Flash?

In the credits: "Based on the series created by Gardner Fox, Harry Lampert and Carmine Infantino".

Could that happen at some point in 2016?

A few quick notes:

1. I enjoyed this one.

2. Certain end-titles credits went to specific writers and artists for specific characters in this one. I don't know who did what for - or to - whom to make those credits happen, but I'm glad they happened. Thank you.

3. No third point. Not right now, anyway.

More on other stuff as the day wears on.

As suspected, part of a larger pattern:

http://comicsbeat.com/lets-get-this-straight-dc-is-anti-marriage-not-anti-gay-marriage/

Since there's this ongoing "concern" about characters looking too old, a lot of longstanding marriages of other characters got retconned away by the Flashpoint mini-series back in 2011.

This looks to be just part of a continuing pattern. If it's not ageism on their part in itself, it's fear of the ageism lurking in the hearts of their readership (and in the case of TV and cinema spinoff projects, viewership as well).

There's a lot of reasons why I picked up Astro City...and I'm thinking this is one of them.

...are Omega Flight.

Word from Newsarama's Toronto coverage on this one, people.

Discuss.

Me? My money was on [livejournal.com profile] rob_sawyer_blog or Paul Haggis to be tapped to write any Canadian Marvel Universe action in future.
