What the heck's going on with Pantone and Adobe right now?

Shouldn't colour standards be open-source stuff anyway these days?

They should be, and I feel like this is the time Quark XPress fucked around with Apple and found out.

I just read about that yesterday. Makes me glad that I don't use Photoshop CC (except at work) and don't knowingly use Pantone colors.

I've been looking at alternative photo editors for some time as I lost the use of PS on my main iMac when I had to update it to Monterrey early this year for Reasons. I still have it running on this 2015 MacBook Pro running 10.12 Sierra. Zero plans to ever upgrade the OS in it EVER.

I use CS6 on this laptop myself.  While I appreciate advances in software, I also understand me making $15 an hour part-time.

Pantone(tm) is a system of colours, inks and papers that guarantees particular print reproduction quality for glossy magazines, books, art prints etc. It's not just the computer screen tone, it's an entire production process.

If you're not planning to print a hundred thousand covers for Vogue magazine then you probably don't need Pantone(tm) in your editing setup. If you do anything that's going to be printed that you care about, you REALLY need it and you pay for it.
