Ideas is replaying a defence of nihilism on CBC Radio One as I type this.

Meanwhile, I'm reading Rabble.ca articles.

Tomorrow, I hope to make time to resume work on a commission sketch. The reference materials sent to me for this one have been challenging reading. Somewhat more challenging to print out in a legible fashion.

More good stuff from Kevin Jardine.

Stars with planets are green-circled with numbers of known planets where known. And some extra stuff thrown in that we didn't know we needed to chart...

This seems like a thing for me and any prospective employer(s) to jointly try to figure out:

Two Books

dewline: Doctor Who quote: Books. Best Weapons in the World (Books)
I found myself inspired to go digging for one book yesterday, and in the process of finding it, rediscovered another.

1. I was looking for A Stó:lō-Coast Salish Historical Atlas yesterday, inspired by the news that a guest starship on Star Trek: Lower Decks would be named USS Vancouver. I half-remembered that this book would have that Indigenous nation's name for the larger region including Vancouver, the one I was taught to call the "Fraser River Valley": S'ólh Téméxw.

(Which I dearly want to learn how to pronounce properly!)

It occurs to me that, before I die, I'd like to see that name, S'ólh Téméxw - accents and all - on the hull of a Starfleet ship, preferably one more prominent than a DS9-style runabout. They can name a runabout "Fraser" if need be. With the people running Star Trek as a while these days, I'm thinking that it might happen, provided the Trek people reach out properly to the Stó:lō. There seems to be at least one Trek fan amongst that nation living in the metro Vancouver region going by anecdotal evidence on Twitter.

(Note: Titmouse Animation, the company handling the actual animation work on Lower Decks, has a branch studio in Vancouver, BC. This might be at the heart of the shout-out to the city.)

2. In the process of trying to find the first book, I accidentally rediscovered my copy of the second one, Ikonica: A Field Guide to Canada's Brandscape by Jeannette Hanna and Alan Middleton. Which contains a number of historical overviews of some two dozen Canadian brands of note and longstanding in our memories. I don't know if it's still in print. My copy became mine thanks to an airplane ride out to PEI back in 2008. It was a family trip, and my mother and I were travelling together by plane for the occasion, everyone else taking their families' respective cars. I think I posted some of the pix from that trip on my Flickr account...?

Taking a look at this for future study:

Now this is something that caught my attention while checking my Blogger reading list this morning:

https://complicationsensue.blogspot.com/2020/03/brilliantly-dumb-decisions.html

Alex Epstein has a couple of books on the art of scriptwriting for film and TV that you might want to look up as time and access allow. But the blog alone is worth a couple of hours for anyone already inclined in that direction.

The specific reference to Jaws here...

There's a thing I want to talk at length about, in reply to an opinion of Lee "Budgie" Barnett's recently published. When I do discuss it, it's going to ramble a bit. So I'm making a note of the link now.

Thanks again, Greg. This time, for pointing this thing out to one and all. Something I need to keep bookmarked. Same goes for anyone else looking for this kind of work, even though I'm making trouble for myself saying it.

Fair warning: this looks to be bandwidth-intensive.

If you're willing to be patient with the load-up, and you're interested in animated mapping exercises, recent NYC history and geography and/or civic politics, this bit of linkage courtesy of the New York Times will repay your patience handsomely.

Can anyone here point me to a good photoreference resource(or more than one) on Cleveland? Yes, it's Local Hero-related.

Thank you in advance for any and all help!

You ever had a day when you're looking for photo reference of just the right pose, you suspect that you've got it right in your studio somewhere...and yet you just can't find it?

This is one of those days.

Oh, I'll find it eventually. It's just driving me up the wall at the moment.

Looking for good visuals of the kinds of buses used by Greyhound, Voyageur and the like. I've done some reference photography of my own, which has helped somewhat thus far, and I am Googling for more. This site's looking promising.

But I'd be interested in any other pointers anyone can provide. Rear-view shots of the aforesaid buses are of particular interest at the moment.

Many thanks in advance...

I'm watching game five of the Sens-Lightning playoff series on Hockey Night in Canada at the moment. Hoping the Sens can hold onto their lead on both the goal-scoring and games-won fronts. Meantime...

Tax paperwork is finally done but for sending it in to the proper authorities. Relief!

[livejournal.com profile] caligatia has been helping me out with background research for Local Hero while I keep drawing pages. Gotta get those details as right as I can, or else readers will be playing "Spot the Mistake" on me, fictional town or not. (And they may do so anyway, just because, and it would karmically serve me right! *grin*) Many thanks, Steff!

Still dealing with residual fallout from Spring Lung-Cleaning Season as well. Anyone reading this who drives a lot and is switching to hybrid or alternative-fueled cars anytime soon therefore has my deepest thanks from the bottom of my lungs as well. If, by chance, any of you reading this are living in East Ottawa and fit the abovewritten automotive description, let me know. I can spare a little time for sideline commissions, after all...

More anon...but for an update: Sens won 3-2. On to the next round, whoever the opposing team ends up being...

I don't have the imagination for any good ones yet. Maybe next year?

A "thank-you" shout to [livejournal.com profile] caligatia for posting her own follow-up on my request for ideas on where to look for good visuals on smaller Florida towns. Thus far, Google Images and UrbanPhoto.net, my preferred sources of choice in such matters, have netted me zilch in visual inspirations. Maybe I need to refine my search methodology to name specific towns?

Comics Notes: I particularly liked Queen & Country, Blue Beetle, Green Lantern, Action and New Avengers: Illuminati out of this week's batch.

Lots of political news that I wish I had the time to talk about at length, but alas... :-(

Back to you, friends and neighbours!
