I think we're about to be deprived of the company of our Russian and Belarusian friends and friendly acquaintances no matter what we decide about internet contact on our side of the Putinist War Against Ukraine.

I got an email yesterday, telling me that the old style links www.ncf.ca/~ad696 are being discontinued. So have a bunch of other member-users of National Capital FreeNet, re: their own website addresses. I haven't used them in years but I expect that there'll be some floating around for time immemorial, places that I no longer have access to...

I am reminded that Trudeau and company have a case for an "online harms" bill. Steve Bannon's activities and those financing them are part of the evidence for that case.

My home page is hosted by a community-run co-op-style ISP based here in my current home city. I have points of contact on Facebook, Blogspot/Blogger, Dreamwidth, Twitter, DeviantArt, and a few other places that I think I'll keep up my sleeve for now. I also like to collect road atlases for fun and research value, even though I've doomed myself by refusing to own a car.

(And now that I've cross-posted that comment back here, this occurs to me...)

Among other ways in which I've doomed myself, of course...

The earlier version of the bill died on the order paper thanks to the latest election call. However, anyone paying attention to the issue expects the bill to be re-introduced soon, however renumbered for House of Commons record-keeping purposes. I hope that the concerns of its critics get more serious consideration, respect and careful incorporation into the phrasing of the next version.

And meanwhile, this crap's being sorted out, too. We hope. I just hope it doesn't get used as cover for making Canada a better client state of either the Xi Regime or Putin or whatever lunatic forces themselves into Biden's job over too many objections to count.

I really wish Ottawa would open talks re: full membership in the EU. Today, if possible.

How are those of us who normally use Facebook coping with the current mess?

How it's apparently happened:

As I type this, I am also in attendance of the virtual edition of Third Monday, a gathering of fandoms over Zoom, mostly based in metro Toronto. Good people, and I'm grateful for the remote access to such gatherings.

So this is a continuing issue for lots of people. My household doesn't have such security arrangements, but there are people on our block and elsewhere across the wider Orléans/Ottawa area - households and businesses - who may want to take another look at theirs!

For that matter, the rest of the security-cam-equipped world might want to be more careful.

I'm watching this particular spacewalk live via NASA's YouTube channel as I type this. To say that I am amazed at what I'm seeing right now...maybe not an understatement.

Quoting the summary in full: "After more than 20 years, the International Space Station is getting new solar arrays, and you have the chance to watch it LIVE during a spacewalk! On June 16, Shane Kimbrough of NASA Astronauts and Thomas Pesquet of the European Space Agency will venture into the vacuum of space for ~6.5 hours to install and deploy two roll-out solar arrays on the space station. "

And Marc Garneau - now the Canadian federal minister of transportation - just got name-checked during this live feed because of his own space-walking history...

Spark is discussing the problem of "link rot" this week. It's an ongoing issue for all of us, I suspect, depending on how old our respective weblogs are. I'm guilty of aggravating the problem by way of not correcting links between blog entries here since moving the whole blog over from LiveJournal to Dreamwidth back in 2017, for example.

Also, I think that paywalls aggravate the "link rot" problem. But what to do to keep those old news services' archives preserved and available without undermining peoples' efforts to keep earning whatever living they can?

I just finished watching a re-run of Man of Steel. Before that, I was rereading David Brin's novel Earth and reading an opinion piece in today's Globe and Mail by Sue Gardner (once of CBC and Wikimedia) on Bill C-10.

I think Prof. Michael Geist has fair criticisms of C-10 as presently promoted by the Trudeau team, particularly Heritage minister Steven Guilbeault. I share those concerns. Sue Gardner pointed out other issues, issues that C-10 might still be refashioned to address better. Issues about the business model of the major internet giants, including Facebook, Twitter, Alphabet/Google, etc.. The model that requires pushing engagement over education...rather than both in tandem.

It also speaks to some concerns that Dr. Brin put forward in the course of writing Earth: oligarchy trying to hold onto the power it used to have by keeping humanity more divided than absolutely necessary. Those companies risk being more entrenched as an oligarchy itself or as part of an existing structure's newer components.

In case any of you are able to get around the paywall because you're subscribed or otherwise legally able to look at it directly:

Also, my local public library provides ProQuest access to the article. Your own public libraries - wherever you are - may be able to provide similar access.

Is anyone else paying attention to Michael Geist's postings about Bill C-10?

We might want to take a closer look at this opinion published by Prof. Michael Geist today.

For all that the current government is getting right at the moment...still. Vigilance.
