From Putin's POV, the Cold War never ended.

He is the old line communist. In his mind, he wants the soviet union back.

The cold war became a background caution that that nut is bringing to the front.

I am of Ukrainian heritage so this invasion is making me so angry that he is hurting and killing people in my family's ancestral home.

He might even be looking to heed Aleksandr Dugin's advice re: the Internet...and seek the death of the Net as a whole...starting with Russia's current holdings.

Not interested in either trying to live in, or having to die of, such a future.

I think Putin could cause a mass revolution against him if he cut off Russia from the rest of the online world.  He's made a lot of miscalculations with this war, and that one step further could really cost him.

This is also true. And all sides in the Horrible Dispute in Progress Now have some interest in keeping such channels open for themselves. So...here's hoping the backbone internet lines connecting Russia and the rest of us don't get completely cut in the meantime, then, and that this horrible mess gets wrapped up quickly and kindly to everyone but hardcore Putinists!
